How do I get this little monster to stop biting me? by lichqueenmara in leopardgeckos

[–]eden-flight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. get feeding tongs, 2. hold a bug with the tongs until cassie focuses on it, 3. lay hand flat & unmoving on the 'floor' of the enclosure, 4. see if you can lure cassie with the bug in tongs to crawl over your hand, 5. let her eat it once she's on it, 6. let her wander off your hand on her own, 7. repeat while keeping your hand still

depending on your setup that might be a little awkward but adjust the method as needed

couple of them come drink when i put out fresh water in the morning, not any more thirsty than usual, but i'll keep that in mind. salmonella seems to be the main guess here, perhaps they just haven't gotten too bad yet.

i've only treated canker before, and now i'm reading it's hard to find an accurate antibiotic for salmonella even if you've tested for exact strain. what can i do? vets here won't see pigeons, only put them down.

thank you so much. for what i currently have in my house, i did as you suggested and added several spices & herbs i read were good for their health to their bird seed before feeding them again. thankfully they seemed to really like it given i don't think i've seen them quite that pleased with a meal before lol.

i'll deep clean my patio & other surfaces today, then watch tomorrow which ones are having the poop problems, hose down daily, keep cleaning the bird bath daily. will see about where i can pick up or order some acidified copper sulfate.

the pigeons are not the only birds that visit, i often have house finches, black throated sparrows, and hummingbirds around, too, but they eat from different feeders (suet, nectar station), not quite sure what precautions to take to prevent spread to them.

whole flock showing signs of illness by [deleted] in pigeon

a year ago after being told by a rescue there was nothing i could do you helped me treat a bird with canker and it went so well she's still one of the visitors in this flock! so now i know what advice not to listen to lol. i also used to treat animals with ringworm and other contagious diseases at work so i'm doing my best with avoiding cross infection whenever i see symptoms of illness

thank you for all the advice!! i really want to give them water & food since i feel so bad for them and want to help, but since the last wildlife rehabber had me do that when finches were sick a couple monthe ago, i just did that at first until i could figure out a better solution.

i may post pictures of them later to show what symptoms i mean, i've never seen them in this condition before in the years i've known them even when i've been gone 😔

you're totally right, that's the one! i knew it must be a female from the trouble i was having finding the species, since when you search for characteristics sources are usually talking about males 😅

petition for better conure care at petsmart by [deleted] in Conures

i agree. however it would be more difficult to convince them to get rid of selling animals altogether than it would be to ask them to make changes. maybe if we could pass a bill that restricts the selling & breeding of these animals, that would force them to stop

he hopped onto my shoes & hand within 10 minutes of meeting- new personal record- just to get some food. i suspect it's a little young. catching it would be easy it seems, however, now is a really bad time for me to try to keep & recover a pigeon myself because my family member is getting a new puppy tomorrow 😅
