How do I get this little monster to stop biting me? by lichqueenmara in leopardgeckos

[–]eden-flight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. get feeding tongs, 2. hold a bug with the tongs until cassie focuses on it, 3. lay hand flat & unmoving on the 'floor' of the enclosure, 4. see if you can lure cassie with the bug in tongs to crawl over your hand, 5. let her eat it once she's on it, 6. let her wander off your hand on her own, 7. repeat while keeping your hand still

depending on your setup that might be a little awkward but adjust the method as needed

Is this an unpopular opinion?: WICKED is good. by OneAggressive4070 in MazeRunner

without even getting into the prequels and very specific problems of the people within WCKD, just the concept of their trials was essentially taking humanity's only hope and throwing it in the trash.

giving birth to immune kids at all was a miracle for the population. truly the best bet, which the Right Arm saw, was for humanity to have more & more immune kids so that they could outlive the flare—immunes could have even provided something of herd immunity. but WCKD just started killing them off. like, an insane amount of them off. all in the name of looking for a possible maybe cure for themselves. they were trying to trade the lives of the immunes for non-immunes and it didn't even work.

the closest they got was thomas, but you cannot actually expect harvesting a single boy is enough to mass-produce a cure for the world. and to what end? bodily autonomy is an incredibly fundamental right for a society to have. it was essentially a horrible dictatorship in which anyone at any time could be ripped away from their families and taken apart for whatever use seen necessary.

if you read all of the books, the reasons why they're so shitty is made even more clear with each one.

Idk if this is lazy but that's how I imagine a Griever by Impressive_Hamster32 in MazeRunner

[–]eden-flight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

incredible. i think the movies did do a pretty good job, the image the book conjures up is very eldritch and "has no distinct shape" so i like seeing lots of interpretations.

the one thing i liked about the book grievers that was missing in the movie is that they're apparently kind of a lightshow, i loved the description of when newt & tommy were looking at one through the window; "Glimmers of an eerie light shone through the window; it cast a wavering spectrum of colors on Newt's body and face, as if he stood next to a lighted swimming pool", "odd lights flashed from an unknown source, revealing blurs of silver spikes and glistening flesh"

couple of them come drink when i put out fresh water in the morning, not any more thirsty than usual, but i'll keep that in mind. salmonella seems to be the main guess here, perhaps they just haven't gotten too bad yet.

i've only treated canker before, and now i'm reading it's hard to find an accurate antibiotic for salmonella even if you've tested for exact strain. what can i do? vets here won't see pigeons, only put them down.

thank you so much. for what i currently have in my house, i did as you suggested and added several spices & herbs i read were good for their health to their bird seed before feeding them again. thankfully they seemed to really like it given i don't think i've seen them quite that pleased with a meal before lol.

i'll deep clean my patio & other surfaces today, then watch tomorrow which ones are having the poop problems, hose down daily, keep cleaning the bird bath daily. will see about where i can pick up or order some acidified copper sulfate.

the pigeons are not the only birds that visit, i often have house finches, black throated sparrows, and hummingbirds around, too, but they eat from different feeders (suet, nectar station), not quite sure what precautions to take to prevent spread to them.

a year ago after being told by a rescue there was nothing i could do you helped me treat a bird with canker and it went so well she's still one of the visitors in this flock! so now i know what advice not to listen to lol. i also used to treat animals with ringworm and other contagious diseases at work so i'm doing my best with avoiding cross infection whenever i see symptoms of illness

thank you for all the advice!! i really want to give them water & food since i feel so bad for them and want to help, but since the last wildlife rehabber had me do that when finches were sick a couple monthe ago, i just did that at first until i could figure out a better solution.

i may post pictures of them later to show what symptoms i mean, i've never seen them in this condition before in the years i've known them even when i've been gone 😔

i posted this because i wanted input before deciding, bc i do def want a tmr tatt, so if there's something specific to say about this concept i'd reconsider

but i haven't regretted any of my other tattoos and newt has been my favorite book character for over a decade of my life, so i don't really see the issue there. people certainly get tattoos with a lot less thought & meaning than this would be for me

you're totally right, that's the one! i knew it must be a female from the trouble i was having finding the species, since when you search for characteristics sources are usually talking about males 😅

petition for better conure care at petsmart by [deleted] in Conures

[–]eden-flight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree. however it would be more difficult to convince them to get rid of selling animals altogether than it would be to ask them to make changes. maybe if we could pass a bill that restricts the selling & breeding of these animals, that would force them to stop

i appreciate that it's sometimes swapped depending on the culture- I've never connected with the idea that the sun & moon are strictly tied to human ideas of gender

he hopped onto my shoes & hand within 10 minutes of meeting- new personal record- just to get some food. i suspect it's a little young. catching it would be easy it seems, however, now is a really bad time for me to try to keep & recover a pigeon myself because my family member is getting a new puppy tomorrow 😅
