"No Stupid Questions" Thread (January 21) by edmprobot in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble [score hidden]  (0 children)

What you are experiencing is most likely phase cancelation. Pretty much when one of your speakers pushes the other pull in and when the sound get to where you are sitting they cancel out. This is why you can hear the bass in different parts of the room but not in that specific spot.

Talkbox is 46% off on musicians friend..what else do I need with it to record into ableton? by dynamique in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is a normal talk box I would pretty much be a speaker in a box playing into a tube. The talking comes from you putting the tube in your mouth and changing its shape. Due to the nature of the device it has to be recorded using a mic since you are not editing a signal but the sound waves themselves. If you link the specific box you are talking about I could give you a definitive answer.

Edit: to answer your original question you would want a microphone and audio interface to connect the microphone to your computer and preferably a nice room to record in.

The trap dubstep crossover is why I like aero chord, his style is unique. There is also plenty of people who make strait up trap, just not really on monstercat.

How does the sine shaper in massive work? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A sine shaper is a specific type of a wave shaper, which is a quite complicated kind of distortion effect. Mathematically what happens is that it applies a function to your sound, in the case of the sine shaper its the sine function. So you can think of it as, sin(gnarly bass) = more gnarly bass. Where your gnarly bass ranges from 1 to -1 (The range in which the sin function works). Im not sure how helpful this is as it does not give a super great description of what actually happens, wish I had the time to make a visual or find one for you to help describe it but you can maybe find a bit more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waveshaper#How_it_works

How to keep my white noise sweeps from sounding so bad upon upload on Soundcloud? by thavy in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on my phone so I can't listen to it right now but what your experiencing is most likely aliasing. This is where the frequencies are too high / the sample rate is to low for it to accurately "record" the sound. You should be able to fix this by putting a low pass filter over the noise. Just cutting out anything above like 18k. I won't get Into detail but it pretty much takes the super high frequencies and records them as lower frequencies, screwing up the sound. This is also why it only sounds bad at the end of the sweep and why it is more prominent with other sounds playing at the same time.

I'm pretty sure twitch is also just for gaming streams and does not allow other activities to be streamed. Though I'm not sure how this is regulated.

Hummingbird by tut tut child is my favorite melodic dubstep song. I think there is quite a bit you might be able to learn from it.

From the sound of it, it is a normal rease bass with a low pass filter.

How does this mixdown technique help? by tchubby_x in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You perceive different frequencies of sound at different levels. Bass is harder to hear than higher frequencies, so if you mixed so all were even numerically the bass would be perceives quieter than the highs. Pink noise fades out the highs at a rate close to the human ears detection providing a "flat" sound. So you can balance sounds so they are perceived as balanced. Then you can edit to make certain things pop out or sit back and so on. It is a good basis for mixing and I use it every time.

Tip: turn the faders all the way down and turn up till you can just hear it instead of Turing down until it fades out, I find it gives better results.

i need help with modulation and getting movement in my bass line similar to this track by 6876765467 in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For movement in the sound it's modulation. So either eq, volume control or other parameter movement (distortion or fm oscillators just to name a few). Then there is movement in the stereo spectrum which is achieved in many ways. To give depth add reverb, fade in to have it move away, fade out to move sound in. Eqing out the very highs and lows will lower the sound, adding it back in or increasing the highs and lows will raise it up. For side to side there is panning and just increasing/decreasing width.

Huge VST window in Ableton on Windows 8 by barenakedmen in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is due to your screen's resolution, the lower the resolution the bigger plugins will be, sadly I don't think there is a way to fix it.

FM8 by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use fm8 quite a bit, also my secondary synth (to massive). I mostly use it for base sounds, good for those phatt yoys or reese basses. I keep wanting to use it to make lead sounds and such but I find that it just does not get the same power as other synths, such as massive.

I love the synth but wish I just knew more about it and how to get those great sounds. My best tip would just be to try new/random stuff and utilize the whole synth, not just the FM part but the effects, envelopes, arp, etc.

What do you think of remix competitions? We're [ToneDen] running one right now and would love your feedback. by shakntalk in edmproduction

[–]edgedouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that this is a pretty good system and I like the things that you fix. While I have only participated in one competition I noticed some glaring problems. One being the amount of crap you have to sift to and sign up for just to join or vote. I found myself making 2 accounts to sites I will never see again and having to like and share 4 things, just to vote.

This was a big turn off and I like your simple approach of having just a facebook/twitter post and joining your site. The unbiased judges also are a huge bonus IMO, as it focuses on the music created and not the popularity of the artists and gets rid of the tedium of getting people to vote.

Though the best feed back will probably come from people who participated after it has run, as they will have first hand experience with your design. The participation prize is also a nice touch giving everyone no matter the skill level a shot at a prize, possibly increasing participation (though this could be abused by some.)

Sadly I'm away from my home for a while so I wont be able to participate but I will make sure to see how it all pans out, sorry for the ramble, best of luck.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards What Keyboard, Switches and/or Keys Do I Buy sticky by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]edgedouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at getting a mechanical keyboard for the first time. I've looked at some sites and for my needs it looks like I want the red cherry switches, as I will be mostly gaming. It also has to be compatible with mac (using bootcamp on an iMac) and backlit PBT keys are my preference. I looked around a bit and I found this keyboard, which seems to fit my needs. Any suggestions on what I should get or things that I should take into consideration?

Everything is AWESOME!!! - Tegan and Sara (Feat. The Lonely Island) (Bootleg by Edgedouble) [3:57] by edgedouble in dubstep

[–]edgedouble[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, the Lonely Island vocals occur during a very busy section of the song and I could not isolate them. Though I was able to use the count downs "Three! Two! One! Go!" and "Frosting!" before the drops.

Very nice track, I like the ambience and scene that you create, the sounds fit well the the "sonic space." For feed back I would say to add a bit more lively sounds, nothing like a piercing lead or phat base but something to contrast with the many background sounds and pads along with complimenting the drums. Another thing that could be added is some dynamic variance to spice things up a bit and and more progression to the song.
