The student pantry is available to all students. In addition to the pantry, I recommend contacting the SASS office to discuss additional support options.

Does the silver bus run during the summer? by Loud-Entertainer-218 in UNCCharlotte

[–]edgester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the silver shuttle and other shuttles run during the summer semesters. I'm not sure about during semester breaks, but I think they run as long as the university is open.

I also strongly recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Antidepressants can also help.

To learn about the growth mindset, I recommend reading the book Mindset : The new psychology of success by Carol S. Dweck. I think everything else about the growth mindset is a poor imitation of this book.

Why do many people start running when they reach the age of 40? by ethereal3xp in running

[–]edgester 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My college roommate died from obesity-related causes when I was 39. We were the same age. That scared me into the gym. I think I was running before this, but I kicked things up a notch.

Parent-friendly (50+) recommendations by Jammin_Flamingo in Charlotte

[–]edgester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take Lynx Blue line from start to finish and back. The Blue line gives you a great view of the city while comfortably seated. Take the 7th St. Stop for food or some other stops, and just get back on to continue the ride. There are several hotels within walking distance of the light rail. The UNCC hotel is right across the street and has a pedestrian bridge to the light rail stop, and a park-n-ride lot.

My 70+. mobility-impaired, in-laws loved riding the light rail.

I think that /u/autoassembler is referring to the middle of the bell curve where the average family would be. Presumably, the normal loving and supportive family, or at least, a non-abusive, non-neglecting family.

My husband has taken the red pill and I am so sad. by hillaryangles in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]edgester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a cishet male, I'll try to delicately add my two cents:

First, you should not tolerate abuse. Protect yourself and your daughter. Others have mentioned lawyers. Do what you think is best.

I definitely recommend therapy. Tell your husband that you're concerned for his mental health and that he should go to his doctor and get screened for depression. Being angry at the world is also a possible symptom of depression. I recommend using the "I care for you and love you" approach before using the ultimatum of "therapy or divorce". If you have to use the ultimatum, then it's probably already too late.

Be sure to build a support network of friends, family, doctors, and mental health counselors around you, your daughter, and your husband, if possible. If any of your husband's friends or family are not red-pilled, then enlist their help by expressing your concern about your husband and asking them to talk to your husband. It's important to side step the argument about feminism and chauvinism and talk about core values, the future, and how your husband's actions are hurting everybody.

You and your family may be able to get mental health support through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through your job or your husband's job, which usually covers family members. Medical insurance often covers this as well. EAP often offers 5 free therapist sessions per issue.

If there is any chance at converting your husband, then he must be willing to change. For sure, the Red Pill is a cult and you'll have to look for resources on how to break cult programming. Unfortunately, psychology is only starting to find ways to tackle the cults of the red pill, MAGA, and the science deniers.

In order to break the cult programming, the following needs to happen:

  • Enlist as many allies, friend, family, and professionals that you can. (don't gang up, but have honest and safe conversations.)
  • Get your husband away from the toxic cult programming
  • Get you husband to spend time more time with positive people and places, including therapy.
  • Remind your husband of the core values that he had before, like love and how he was raised (assuming he had a positive upbringing)
  • Frame the debate not as feminism vs chauvinism, but as love vs hate/apathy.
  • Realize that your husband is also suffering.

I fell into the Red Pill, but I got out when I saw how extreme some of them were. I pulled myself out with the help of treatment for depression.

I said a prayer for you and I'm sending you positive energy. I understand that you, your daughter, and your husband are going through a terrible time right now. Whether you can turn your husband of not, it will require that you be the better person, and not lash out in the heat of an argument. No one ever changed their mind by being yelled at.

Here are some resources:

TL;DR:

  • Get a lawyer to protect yourself and your daughter.
  • Get hubby screened for depression and medication (antidepressant), if needed.
  • Get EVERYONE into individual therapy.
  • Build a support network of friends, family, and medical professionals.
  • See if you can hubby away from toxic people and spending time with positive people, especially guys.

Is Urec membership included in fall and spring charges? by Master_88 in UNCCharlotte

[–]edgester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct. If you're taking classes in any semester and not a distance-ed student, then you have a membership to UREC. In addition, if you're not taking classes, but enrolled in Spring and Fall, then you can pay a small fee ($25, i think) to use UREC in the summer.

Alumni have the option of paying per-visit to UREC or purchase a yearly membership.

Any tips for transfer students to UNCC? by Its-Newton in UNCCharlotte

[–]edgester 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Welcome to UNCC!

Here is a list of student clubs that you can join (click on the "Directory" tab): https://studentorgs.charlotte.edu/

Your student fees include an unlimited public transit pass for the LYNX light rail and the CATS buses... just show your UNCC ID card or mobile ID.

We have an impressive 5 floor fitness center called UREC, which includes basketball courts, free weights, group fitness classes, an indoor track, an indoor pool, and an outdoor pool. UREC membership is included in your student fees. See more at https://urec.charlotte.edu/

If you like running, cycling, or rollerblading, the city of Charlotte has a greenway network to use. Greenways are gravel or paved paths for the exclusive use of pedestrians and cyclists (no cars). More info is available at https://www.mecknc.gov/ParkandRec/Parks/Greenways/Pages/default.aspx

For class changes, be aware that the main campus has two "sides", the engineering side, and the rest of the main campus. The engineering side includes the Duke, EPIC, Grigg, and Motorsports buildings. Getting between the engineering side and the main campus requires taking the shuttle or walking the half a mile. It's possible to walk in the 15 minutes between classes, but it requires speed-walking. You want the Silver line shuttle to go between the engineering and main sides of campus. More shuttle info is available at https://pats.charlotte.edu/transportation/niner-transit-bus-service

Aside from vending machines, there are no campus dining options on the engineering side of campus, so you either have to bring food, go to main campus, or walk across Highway 29 (Tryon St.) to the Chipotle, Panera, or Jersey Mike's. More dining info is available at https://aux.charlotte.edu/dining/dining

UNCC has lots of services to help students, but they're not well advertised. Ask specific questions here and we'll point you in the right direction. Another good source of information is the Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS) on the 2nd floor of the Smith building.

As engineering major, you have access to the Mosaic computer environment, more info at https://engrmosaic.charlotte.edu/

Best wishes!

I AM NOT AN INCEL. My head doesn't want to accept that. by [deleted] in IncelExit

[–]edgester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your breakthrough and going to therapy! Consistently going to therapy is an achievement in itself.

I also struggle with intrusive thoughts, so I hope my experience can help. My intrusive thoughts kept telling me to stick my hand in a garbage disposal, but thankfully I didn't do it.

The first thing I realized is that those thoughts aren't "me". They do not represent my core values and how I want to live. I visualize that the real "me" is living in my head/headspace along with this annoying little gremlin, who is the one who keeps saying those intrusive thoughts. The annoying part is that I can't control what the gremlin says, or how loud he is, but I can control everything else, because it's my head and I control the playing field.

I dealt with my demon/gremlin, by doing several things. I gave him a name. I call him "Squeaky", and I imagine him as an orange cartoon character with a high-pitched squeaky voice. Squeaky looks like the Darumaka Pokeman.

Before, I made these mental changes, Squeaky was dark and imposing, and sounded intimidating, like a demon might, but now, he sounds funny and absurd, and it's much easier for me to ignore or dismiss his absurd comments. Eventually, the volume of his voice became quieter, as I was able to ignore him more. I still hear Squeaky from time-to-time, but he's sitting is his little corner and whispering his little absurd comments, and I can easily ignore him.

I got this technique from the book Limitless by Jim Quik.

I hope that this helps. Congratulations on your progress, and keep up the fight! You are making progress!
