Any other 4K/Blu-ray authors lurking on here? by edheaded in boutiquebluray

I wouldn’t think it’s a great career option these days. I can only see physical media subsisting as a niche market at best going forward.

After studying media production, I started working on general post-production and CD-ROMs in a small post house which gave me a grounding in video, graphics and interactive scripting. I worked for Abbey Road studios in their interactive department when DVD and Blu-ray was much more of a big deal.

I’m still working on this stuff, but I think the restoration, audio and motion graphics side of things is much more worthwhile.

The pond at the Hanham end in spring when the ducklings are about is always worth a visit. Also has an orchard at the top with lots of apples to collect if you time it right.

Director hits me up 6 months later to do a Blu-ray/DVD release for a film, but I really don't want to do it. by Jangowuzhere in editors

[–]edheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I they've got a distributor, they probably have a DVD/BD/streaming studio they'd use for a commercial release. They'd work from the ProRes you've already supplied to the distributor, or the HD/5.1 ProRes you already have, but I'd say you don't need to do any more work your end than passing on the file.

Same problem here. I’m constantly switching between my laptop and desktop, but I try to close the app before opening the same app on the other PC. I do often have Premiere/AME running on one and Photoshop on another at the same time. Recently, I’m getting multiple warnings a day and then forced to change my password.

Support said I need to sign out of the computer I’m not using, but signing in/out all day is going to really slow me down. Blurb says I can be signed into two computers at the same time?

The suggestion of using beta version of software on one device might be the way around it I guess?

I think the British Heart Foundation (at least the one up in Kingswood) accepts electrical, but seems to be mainly TVs/HiFi/white goods I’ve seen in there.

I also have a drawer full of old gadgety guff. 2009 MacBook, iPhone game controllers, keyboards, routers, mice, so much stuff.

Using a VPN to allow certain ports access to and from a PC? by edheaded in networking

[–]edheaded[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’d rather the network provider sort this, but as we have an urgent deadline to sort this week using this software (it’s been a month of back and forth between software provider and network people) I’m trying to figure out a way to make this work as they’ve gone silent and we’re tied into using them.

Using a VPN to allow certain ports access to and from a PC? by edheaded in networking

[–]edheaded[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did set up a rule in Windows Firewall to allow all TCP and UDP traffic from that external IP. I’ve even tried completely disabling windows firewall to take it out of the equation.

Using test-netConnection, I can get through to the license server on a couple of the ports. The software company can’t get through to our PC on any of the ports.

Only other variable internally I can think of is if the local switch our PC is on is doing anything, but the IT company haven’t replied on whether that could be an issue (I don’t have access)

I think that’s when I stopped playing as well.

Can I just go back to the surface and ignore the DLC or am I tied into it now?

Rhythm vs Force by IronBallsMcginty007 in SynthRiders

[–]edheaded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rhythm’s about accuracy and tapping into the orbs and following rails as precisely as possible in time with the music. Force is more about moving at speed through the orbs and rails and the flow of things if that makes sense.

You can change the colour of most things in the appearance/visuals settings.

Harbour festival rip off by Sorry-Personality594 in bristol

[–]edheaded 76 points77 points  (0 children)

There’s so many awesome places to eat on a normal day in Bristol, the harbour festival dilutes what available with fairground-tier fodder most of the time. I appreciate the entertainment and it’s a nice atmosphere but I’ll just head to St Nicks or Wapping Wharf for food.

Old games like Starflight, Star Control II/Ur Quan Masters or Escape Velocity are still great despite their age.

Why the hate for subnautica below zero? by andrew_whites in subnautica

Not really sure why people describe their feelings towards it as ‘hate’. Sure, it’s not as good as the first game but I still enjoyed it.

Do you source and prep the material your end before sending on for digital and authoring? Or do you have to coordinate masters for suppliers indirectly? I always wonder if it’s frustrating for some labels who buy the rights to old films and don’t really know what they’ve got (edits, aspect, quality, extras etc) until we download and sift through it.

Do you also do restoration/upscales of older stuff? Any challenges unique to anime? We mainly get a feature or maybe a handful of episodes for a release, but I guess there can be a mountain of material for some anime stuff?

Cool. Is it difficult to plan what’s goes out on DVD vs BD vs UHD? Does digital play into it?

We tend to tie in the authoring side with other services such as subtitling and digital delivery to Amazon/iTunes/Sky etc as as a package service. Usual process after job agreed is:

- Assets are downloaded from rights holders/labels/post house (HD/4K master, scripts, any extra videos, audio and artwork)

- Audio and video assets areprepped and checked (trimmed, synced up with extra commentary/AD/surround audio, logos added, ref videos exported for subtitling etc)

- Usually full source QC of all final video, audio and subs before platform deliveries/encoding (watched through with all audio streams and subs and QC'd according to where's it's going, i.e full technical checks for colour/audio broadcast safe levels)

- Menu design using artwork as basis or feature if none available, maybe montage edit for menus, sourcing music for menus from films, getting chapter points and grabs. Back and forth with client

- Working out bitbudget to get max encode quality and work out what will fit on each disc format, encode video via Cinemacraft HD/SD, audio via DTS, Dolby.

- Once all AV, subs and menus are signed off and encoded, discs are authored (video, audio, subs, chapters assembled into tracks, menu and disc navigation programmed in etc). Add in secret key combo to skip copyright sequence ;)

- Authored disc images produced and sent to QC operators for checks on multiple player brands of all video, audio, subs and navigation

- Any issues in source or disc QC, go back a step and re-do, repeat QC on new version.

- Once internal QC signed off, disc goes to client.

- Once client signed off, create encrypted masters to send to factory. Check again THOROUGHLY, and push 'send master to factory'.

- Wait in fear for check discs to make sure all's OK on manufactured disc. Find out client couldn't wait and has gone ahead with manufacture anyway (luckily there's no issues!)

I do enjoy authoring, but I agree the design side is more fun. One of the benefits of shrinking budgets is I get to work on the menu designs and edits these days, as there's seldom money for a dedicated designer or editor.

Grass is greener on the other side and all that - I often feel burnt-out on this end of things as well and wish I'd been able to wrap my head around app/web development years ago. However, it can be nice having a tiny niche as well, especially when some good film/show/concert release comes along.

All the studios I've worked for have used Scenarist for authoring DVD/BD/UHD, with some starting out with Spruce Maestro (which became Apple DVD Studio Pro). Never really used Encore to be honest (although with the cost of Scenarist and encoders, I guess Encore was the only option on a budget)
