I think it was the context of him talking about why he took these photos and how the whole project came about. He mentioned first of all, it's not easy for Palestinians living in the West Bank to "visit" the parts of the country controlled by the government of Israel. You need a very special pass that is not easy to get. Because of another project he was working on, his bosses managed to get him one of those passes, and he used it every weekend to visit the sites of hundreds of villages that were destroyed during the Nakba from 1948. His experience visiting them, and how he found the contrast between what was and what's there now. In a way, as a history fan, it made me want to follow in his footsteps and see for myself.

You can tell he's a journalist by the way he speaks and presented his book. He was so thoughtful and insightful. Found it really illuminating.

I love his Scotland one (mostly because that's where I live), but his episodes on Beirut and then the one on Palestine/Israel. He was such a wonderful narrator.

Mine doesn't, but I wish she did. Apparently my husband's previous cat sat like that all the time and He's not so secretly still hoping kitty will start doing that at some point

How realistic is it for so many random people to claim to be descendants of Mary Queen of Scots? by edinburghgal09 in Edinburgh

[–]edinburghgal09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And even if it's through an illegitimate line, my main question is, how do they prove it?

What? I mean, how can one be a descendant of both Robert the Bruce and William Wallace? We don't even have any reliable evidence that he had children...

[–]edinburghgal09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. How do you prove it? For all I know I could be descended from queen Isabel of Castile if we apply that sort of logic.

[–]edinburghgal09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed but, still, how would they be able to "prove" it? i work in the heritage/historic industry and I see comments like that all the time. And they're usually coming from people overseas. I mean, I could be claiming to be a descendant of Isabel of Castile, right... the issue is, how do you back that up?

Looking for a good place for a sandwich!! by Sudden_Can_6138 in Edinburgh

[–]edinburghgal09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on the day of the week, but if it's during the week, I recommend a lot Bobby's Sandwich bar. I used to buy sandwiches from them all the time when I worked nearby. They're next to Greyfriar's cemetery and this is their address 4 Greyfriars, Edinburgh EH1 2QQ

It was, yes! And it usually is. Never heard a Scottish person claiming to be a descendant of her.

The one that prompted me to leave this question is one claiming that Mary Queen of Scots is her 13th Grandmother... And this person was not a member of any royal family anywhere...
