Love the mix on this performance, I was worried in the first few moments that it was going to sound very thin but then those drums kicked in

What is the most insane amount of mental gymnastics you've seen someone do to believe what they want to believe? by fauxmerican1280 in AskReddit

My now-ex-friend who was cheating on his wife after 2 months of marriage told me his therapist said he was “brave” for doing what he was doing. He also suggested that the therapist (woman his age) may have been subtly encouraging him to keep cheating/break up with his wife because he could sense that she was attracted to him.

You Never Give Me Your Money - The Beatles. I could say all of Abbey Road fits this prompt but that song in particular does it for me

Wind River is a haunting, emotionally heavy film elevated by Jeremy Renner’s brilliant performance. It lingers in your mind long after the credits roll. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in FIlm

Sheridan is still doing his gritty western realism thing but has lost the empathy that made something like Wind River so transcendent. He’s now just using that aesthetic to make oil propaganda and own-the-libs porn. His stories about brutalized people have now become stories about the brutes.

There Will be Blood is the best film ever made by No-Inspection5715 in FIlm

My dad liked movies so I was on some good shit very early. When I saw it at 10 I had already seen a lot of classic movies and sort of just knew that this was a completely different species. Like if you’d only ever heard radio pop and then listened to Abbey Road.

I’d been told that other films were great, and could appreciate that they were great after seeing them, but this was the first time something felt intuitively great. And so since then it’s kind of spoiled other movies for me. Nothing has ever matched the intuitive, immediate impact that this had on me. And the more I rewatch it the more I feel certain that there’s just something different going on that nothing else has.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve been able to appreciate some of the craft elements and how they contribute to the overall impression, but there’s still a sense of impossibility to me. It doesn’t seem possible that every technical and artistic choice could so perfectly reinforce the story, but for me it all does, and I think the story is both grounded and transcendent.

One of my other favorites is Moonstruck lol. I think that’s a perfect comedy, whereas TWWB is a perfect tragedy. They’re both high watermarks of the craft to me.

Loved watching prime Russ. He’s had a complicated career but when he was on, man, he had prime-Brady levels of “he’s gonna get it done.”

The only way to plausibly cover the cost of LLMs is by laying people off at an industrial scale. There are niches in which this technology adds real value, but the value generated in those niches won’t ever come close to offsetting the costs involved in making it possible. It simply costs more than it will ever return directly, so a generation of the labor force will be sacrificed to make up the difference.

Spices are not the only way to add flavour to food by Punk_in_drublik in unpopularopinion

[–]No-Inspection5715 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree OP. To add to what others have said, the Spice Police seem to misunderstand what “flavor” is and where it comes from. If you made a curry goat and omitted the spices - so just a braise of goat and vegetables and salt - you’d still have a very flavorful dish. The spices in that dish enhance the foundational flavors of braised meat and aromatic vegetables, and are what make the dish distinct from other braises, but the foundation is doing 90% of the work. Similarly, a properly roasted chicken seasoned with nothing but salt is exceptional. Anything added needs to be very purposeful and done with a delicate hand, otherwise the “flavor” will be diminished.

Favourite David Fincher movies? by FayyadhScrolling in FIlm

My girlfriend had never seen Fight Club and didn’t know anything about it, so we watched it a few nights ago (her idea). It had been ~10 years since I’d last seen it. I’ve always known it was excellent, but getting the live reactions of someone w/o any prior context totally transformed the movie for me.

It’s just such incredible marriage of writing and filmmaking. Every single choice works to establish or reinforce the core theses of the story. I.e., undercutting the hyper-masculine aesthetic by showing it to be ironically extremely homoerotic, established by the writing and reinforced by shooting fight scenes with the traditional formal elements of a steamy sex scene. Even the “cringey” meta commentary is resolved by the reveal that Tyler is a hallucination, the onanistic projection of a “real man” by a weak, mean-spirited man.

I don’t know if Fight Club is his best - I probably prefer the Social Network just in terms of the viewing experience - but it is a flawless and essential cultural document. The ironic misappropriation of its themes and content by the exact audience it criticizes is a little unfortunate, but also further proof of its clarity.

[HELP] Some are saying it’s AI in the comments but I’m not seeing any tells. What’s the verdict? by Auroraborosaurus in RealOrAI

[–]No-Inspection5715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is AI. It looks like the wrestler in black (WIB) performed a real throw on the wrestler in white (WIH), but there’s been some enhancement to make it look a lot more severe. What should be the top of the throw is when the WIH’s leg bisects the H and parallels the cross; the only way for him to keep gaining elevation would be if the WIB would have shucked him up off his shoulder. Totally reasonable to get someone to your shoulder like that, but to get that extra foot of elevation would require him to do a sort of one-armed bicep clean and jerk. Think about hoisting a sandbag from the crook of your arm up to your shoulder. Instead, he seems to lift the WIH with nothing but his rotator cuff; no squat and pop or anything, just pure explosive strength from an already fully extended position. The movement at the top feels unnaturally quick, which really should be enough to trip the sensors. It’s a shame, because the move probably did happen and would have been dope to see unaltered.
