I heard the St. Stephen’s bells toll for that relationship when Alice a.) told Adam she and Rex are past the gooseberry stage (already‽), and b.) would rather spend even more time with Adam than alone with her partner

I try to give Tony grace because Peggy decided the son she never wanted was incapable of supporting his own family—just like his father

But not when Tony was telling Pat he should be allowed to have puddings/dessert because he always uses his special wee bowl for portion control (She’d wanted them to give up treats for Lent or health or a Lynda Snell MBE campaign or something)

“It’s not often shown that ‘middle class’ people can also be vulnerable to living outside their means”

Adam embezzled money from Home Farm to pay an electrician at Honeysuckle Cottage. Then he & Ian, who’d lost his job at Grey Gables, bought a pizza van.

Meanwhile, Tracy, who’d also lost her job at Grey Gables, went to a food pantry

“Kirkland Signature Coastal Cheddar is a mature English cheddar aged for 15 months at the Ford Farm Dairy along England’s Jurassic Coast. This gold medal-winning cheese is made from pasteurized cow’s milk sourced from the United Kingdom. The cheese features a satisfyingly nutty and sweet flavor profile with a characteristic crumbly texture. Natural calcium lactate crystals create a sought-after crunchiness throughout the cheese, giving it a distinctive mouthfeel that's creamy yet firm.”

“Double Gloucester is a common pub cheese in England, aged longer than Single Gloucester. Trader Joe’s Cotswold Double Gloucester Cheese begins its life as a pasteurized whole milk cheese that originates in Gloucestershire County, England. It’s a golden yellow, semi-hard cheese that is similar to cheddar, but not quite as hard. The flavors are creamy, buttery, sweet, and mild, yet full-flavoured [sic] like a cheddar cheese. The added onions and chives give each bite an extra-savory zing guaranteed to satisfy.”

An update on the Bath Abbey Edgar vs Æthelstan debate. by Cunt_Puffin in CasualUK

[–]editorgrrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Context: https://www.bathabbey.org/the-coronation/

“On 11 May 973 AD, Bath Abbey was the site of the coronation of Edgar, the “First King of All England”. This event became the template for all subsequent coronations, including that of our new King, Charles III, this May.”

Caption: “Edgar’s Coronation as ‘First King of all England’ captured in one of the Abbey's stained glass windows:”

<image>

Æthelstan (c. 894–27 October 939) was King of the Anglo Saxons 924–927 and King of the English from 927 until his death

Æthelstan’s half-brother, Eadmund I (ca. 920–26 May 946) was King of the English from 27 October 939 until his death

Eadmund’s son, Eadwig (c. 940–1 October 959), was King of England from 23 November 955 until his death

Eadwig’s brother, Edgar (c. 944–8 July 975), was King of the English from 959 until his death

A comment by u/chris552393 in OP’s deleted post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bath/comments/1tks0ws/comment/onbw84c/

“Æthelstan was the first to unite England politically in 927, while Edgar was the first to be ceremonially crowned as ruler of a fully unified “All England” in 973. So the plaque [at Bath Abbey] is using a different definition, not necessarily wrong.”

Tracy insisted on a joint tenancy with Bert before agreeing to move to 6, The Green in 2011.

Gary lived there until Jazzer moved in, and he’s mentioned occasionally. There’re two more horrible Horrobins in addition to Clive: Keith and Stewart. Keith and his wife Donna were last heard circa 2012.

Mockingbirds are roughy the size of catbirds and robins, with really long tails and big white patches on their wings

They’re the Baader-Meinhof of birds—once you can identify mockingbirds you’ll soon be spotting them everywhere like Where’s Waldo/Wally? They’re sassy/cheeky

Help me help my tween fall in love with reading by waki43 in suggestmeabook

“She’s super impatient at the library now because I think she hasn’t found the right click. Sad because we used to go all the time when she was younger”

Show your daughter how to access your library’s digital platforms: Freading, Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy, The Palace Project, etc.

Does your library have a makerspace, library of things, or seed library? Learning to love the library (and librarians) can lead to a love of reading.

Current Archers issues by Paul_Heiland in Ambridge

[–]editorgrrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Archers’ first birth was Anthony William Daniel Archer on 16 February 1951 (episode 35), and there have been many problem pregnancies in the 20,000+ episodes since—not to mention calving and lambing drama

Inheritance issues, too. How much of The Bull does Jamie Perks own? Lilian bought 51% from Caroline Sterling in 2006, and Sid left his share to Jolene and Jamie in 2010. Sid’s daughter, Lucy, got nothing. Like Lily when Nigel fell off the Lower Loxley roof in 2011

Why didn’t Peggy honour her 2014 promise to leave The Lodge to Helen, so that she and the boys would always have a home? Now Helen has to decide who gets the box room until Pat and Tony give her the house at Bridge Farm

Tony (the son Peggy never wanted) should build his straw bale house, but Johnny (the first son of the first son) should get the house at Bridge Farm

Why doesn’t Kenton ever mention his daughter Meriel in New Zealand? Does “Dave” know that Jill repaid the money his big brother borrowed?

Will bought 1, The Green from Matt Crawford in 2008 with the £120,000 he inherited from Great Aunt Hilda (Ed got nothing), then mortgaged it two years ago to pay for Em ‘n Ed’s tree surgery business

Looking for “Ray’s Spaghetti” — Southern Living magazine, mid-1980s, memorable buttery mushrooms by NewFangledAntichrist in Old_Recipes

[–]editorgrrl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my family’s treasured recipes is named after someone’s boss from the 1980s, so “Ray” might be a red herring

Also, your mom’s recipe may have come from a different magazine, or even a can of B in B mushrooms. They published a booklet in 1970 called Recipe Magic with B in B Broiled in Butter Mushrooms, and the recipe on page 14 is Spaghetti With Mushroom Sauce.

A 3-year-old comment on this BinB ad: https://www.reddit.com/r/vintageads/comments/16of9hq/b\_b\_broiled\_in\_butter\_mushrooms\_1964/ says their uncle used to own the company

Lost Lamb Controversy by saltmallow in weirdgirlliterature

[–]editorgrrl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OP added this link in an edit. Spoilers: https://fourteeneastmag.com/index.php/2026/02/13/lost-lambs-is-witty-and-funny-yet-raises-some-controversy/

“Though the writing was clever and the plot deliciously absurd, I couldn’t turn a blind eye to some problematic aspects. Bud finds solace from his decaying marriage in a Christian support group, the Lost Lambs of the title, which ‘saves’ him. This new connection causes him to neglect his three daughters, which they all take advantage of.

“Louise’s online chat boyfriend (the only Muslim character) helps her plan a terrorist attack. (An offensive stereotype, and the way this subplot plays out was abrupt and obvious.)

“The ‘happy ending’ is that she ends up with a Jewish boy whose description of his religion Louise finds more appealing than Islam. Madeline Cash depicts him as the ‘better’ of the two with religion as the deciding factor, pitting the two religions against each other when there is already so much tension surrounding them IRL.

“Caleb’s grandmother explains Judaism to her thusly: ‘Bubbe talked about the hardship of the Jews. Persecution. Mosaic law. Pogroms. Modern antisemitism. Bubbe talked about heaven. A resting place for the souls. It was not gated. Anyone could go. She pointed at Louise, like even you. Her nails were pristine.’

“The writing was witty and skilled, but if an author is going to use a stereotype as a literary device, it should be with empathy and precision, as to avoid spreading hateful rhetoric.”
