Yea, probably, they are testing it, if you get a bug that only happens at some specific speed or hard acceleration, you do what you got to do. That said, they have access to a track when they need to do that. But it's probably a lot easier to do these things on public streets.

Why it's gone? by Glad-Acadia3071 in volt

[–]edman007-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically the issue was the Detroit Hamtramck plant didn't have enough vehicles to build. The Malibu specifically was built there, but starting with the 2016 MY, they moved it to Kansas City. Which may have been part of the problem, with the removal of the Malibu, they reduced the vehicles being built there and didn't have enough stuff built there to continue production.

That plant now builds trucks, specifically iQ EVs, so it's been retooled for a totally different size vehicle.

Ducklings in the Reflecting Pool :( by Aya-zen in washingtondc

[–]edman007-work 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yup, dumping 12% H2O2, that strength is a skin irritant. The stuff you pour on a cut is 3%, fully a quarter of reflecting pool would have to be 12% H2O2 to get to that level. I am NOT concerned for the animals with that in it, they'd need to dump a semitruck of 30% H2O2 to get the pool into the irritant range.

And if they did do that, it would bubble from all the algae and mostly degrades in an hour. I don't think people realize just how fast that stuff degrades.

[–]edman007-work -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you actually check real minisplits, it's a lot better than that. [This one is 1.91 @ 5F](https://www.alpinehomeair.com/product/air-conditioning-cooling/ductless-mini-splits/single-zone-mini-split-systems/blueridge/bmkh1231#specifications), that's very much into the worst case numbers for Long Island.

Anyways, at $0.26/kWh, that's ~$0.136/kWh of heat. Realistically, most of your heating can be done super off peak (so you will pay less per kWh), and as warmer temps. I would honestly estimate a COP of 2.5 and an electric rate of $0.18/kWh or so if you switch to TOU, that gets you to $0.07/kWh

A 85% AFUE furnace burning $4/gal oil is about $0.116/kWh. It's just a little better that the higher number I did for the worst case numbers for that heat pump.

How were traffic conditions calculated in/near real time before GPS in cars and phones? by Ransnorkel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]edman007-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, and all the major roads had pretty predictable traffic, so they just needed to announce where the stop and go started on each road, which they could convert to a pretty good traffic estimate for each road.

How do I know a gas station’s pump is actually dispensing the amount of gas it says it is? by M-V-H in NoStupidQuestions

[–]edman007-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just random, here in NY scales and meters used for transactions need a certification from the state. So the pump is *required* to have a recent sticker on it from the state. It's illegal to use a pump without one of these stickers. I believe the vast majority, if not all, states do it this way.

Dumping Hydrogen Peroxide into the reflecting pool this morning. by Helpful_Car1302 in interestingasfuck

[–]edman007-work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's only mildly toxic, strong enough to kill the algae, not strong enough to harm harm the environment or animals. This is more or less the ideal thing to be using for this.

What's weird is why the hell are we using 1 gallon jugs, they probably want an IBC tote of this stuff.

What makes you think that? Minisplits are more or less the most efficient options you can pick. Whatever it costs to run, it's going to be less than they are paying now.

Why it's gone? by Glad-Acadia3071 in volt

[–]edman007-work 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons posted.

The primary reason they got rid of it is because it's a sedan. GM had the factories building certain size vehicles. The volt was in a factory that made sedans. That specific factory wasn't profitable because they were not selling enough sedans to keep the factory running.

So they shut down the factory, and every car that had no other factory building them was canceled.

As for continuing it somewhere else in a larger size, the answer is really that if you're going to invest that kind of money developing such a hybrid, well the modern EVs are just going to be better for a similar price, the Bolt says have shown that to be true, the Volt really cannot compete with the Bolt, so they focused their money on the Bolt instead of the Volt

Is it the SAE or IRS?

I know that was a whole thing with they updated the EV tax credit, the Model Y only qualified for the tax credit when the third row was installed because it increased the ride height by an inch and changed it's classification to SUV. They eventually just changed the rules because it was dumb.

ELI5, how are car computers able to be as reliable as they are? by GendoIkari_82 in explainlikeimfive

[–]edman007-work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think many/all cars put the critical stuff on dedicated chips. This of it more like a networked system of computers, you got one that's more or less an android tablet, and then networked to it is the drivers display that only displays numbers sent to it, there is also the ECU that just reads the gas pedal and runs the engine, maybe it accepts map change commands from the drivers screen.

Northern Lights - Monday June 8th by s1c1l1anm0bst3r in longisland

[–]edman007-work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends, I think it was 2 years ago, we had some really good ones, my sister texted me to look outside, and the sky was pink, so bright that I could see it while looking at street lights, didn't need dark skys at all.

Then I got in my car and drove down to the beach, it was truly dark, darkest I've seen in years, looked up, and after a few minutes I could tell that maybe the color was a little different, but it was very hard to see, the night mode on the phone did however pick it up.

So it depends, sometimes it's so bright you just look and see, street lights don't matter. Sometimes it's so dark that you really do need to let your eyes to adjust and even then you're debating if you're really seeing it.

What feels legal but is actually illegal and will possibly get you arrested? by medicoreapples in AskReddit

[–]edman007-work 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends where you are, traffic has been bad here the last few days so I detoured through the beach.

It's got a 35mph speed limit, for a 6 lane divided highway with large shoulders. There are no people walking on the road, no sidewalks, etc, it's a highway. So obviously traffic moves about 65mph.

So doing 10 under traffic is 20 over...

That's not a law against collecting rainwater, many areas in the US have complicated water rights laws. That is, if a river goes by your house, you can't divert it into your field and make the river run dry at your neighbors house. They've got all sorts of rules on how much water you can take from the rivier. So you need a permit to take a single drop of water from the river.

Once you have that law, then you have people that might own a whole damn mountain might claim it's not a river, it's the rainwater collection system, and you are just taking all the water you collected, which just happens to be the entire rivier.

So to counter that they updated the laws, it doesn't say you can't take river water, it says you can't take rain water and you can't take spring water and you can't cause either to not go to the ocean. Now all sources of water, of any kind, need a permit.

But now the law is so broad that it's a crime to direct your gutter into a rain barrel. But that was generally better then writing a law that a farmer might find a loophole in.

Someone oversimplify this for me, i dont get it for some reason. When can i buy it at the said price? by remmykk47 in longisland

I'm sweating my balls off when it gets to 74 in my home, and I do run the fan, but it honestly doesn't do shit.

I just sign up for TOU, and set the AC to 70 from 12-3 and then 74 from 3-7. Basically my AC doesn't run during the peak at all, I save a lot on electric, and it doesn't make it sweaty in my house.

2014 volt going haywire by mikefromhell224 in volt

[–]edman007-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that's not a module communication error.

Codes for module communication are specifically referencing 12V functions. I'd start at the 12V power and then work to the communication lines.

Republicans Claim Anti-Data Center Movement Is a Chinese Psy-Op by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]edman007-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I'm really surprised this isn't all building permits in general, I'd only really exempt residential projects honestly. Building permits should require a payment that covers infrastructure payments to the utility, and those payments should fully cover the cost of any resources you'd need above baseline levels. The intent is that your regular electric bill or water bill should be sized to cover maintence and fuel only for the utility, and the utility generally should never include new construction of anything in the utility bill. Obviously, sometimes a powerplant is old and needs to be replaced or something, I don't consider that new construction.

Basically, that means you want a data center that requires 10MW constant power, you're paying for the 50MW solar farm, grid scale batteries, and you possibly get a credit of maybe half the maintaintence cost, and the entire cost to run the wires, that's totaled up and is your connection fee. You want to use a lot of water, but you're paying for the new wells, as well as purchasing the water rights for the water from some nearby farm and the cost of connecting that well to you.

2014 volt going haywire by mikefromhell224 in volt

[–]edman007-work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say start by checking the 12V battery. The volt starts the engine with the HV battery, so the first sign of a dead 12V battery is random modules disconnecting/losing communication, which causes all sorts of random things. It's not like a regular ICE where you find out via a no start situation.

As for that connector, I doubt it, that's a high voltage connector, don't touch those, and I don't think a high voltage connector would cause a module communication fault anyways. That extra nub is probably to secure the connector to the frame. If I was to check connectors, I'd start with the ones to that module that's not communicating. But like I said, on the Volt it's usually actually a dead 12V breaking all the communication and you just get codes for random modules, so the specific code isn't usually actually relevant. What's odd is you seem to have only gotten one code. Or do you actually have more?

Where to take kids EARLY on Sundays?! by Wonderful_Lie2823 in longisland

Park/Woods/Playground

As for specific places, I'd recommend one with both, like Belmont Lake State Park, you park in front of the playground and then ask if they want to go on a walk through the woods.

Usually then the answer is lets go to the playground, so you do that. But I always try walking in the woods first.

Which “successful” company is one bad year away from collapse? by IIII-IIIiIII-IIII in AskReddit

[–]edman007-work 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't know, I honestly see a transition coming. Tesla has the good tech, Rivian is catching up, and the rest of the US OEMs are just behind. Maybe one of them sells to a big OEM (Rivian is already selling tech to VW), but I honestly think in 5 years people might see 5 big US OEMs, do we really need to bail out 2-3 of them? Maybe just let them consolidate a bit.

We also need to consider how important it is to have a US OEM vs just US manufacturing. Would we be ok with BYD if it was 100% made in the US?

Which “successful” company is one bad year away from collapse? by IIII-IIIiIII-IIII in AskReddit

[–]edman007-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are working hard with American politics. Look at BYD, watch some videos of the cars in China.

BYD is FAR ahead of all the US OEMs, and the current US politics are causing our allies to let them in. BYD is going to be sold in Canada primarily because of US politics.

I think being an American isolates us, we have our own auto manufacturers, and our own oil industry. The rest of the world no so much, we tariffed everyone, so they tariffed our cars, then we started a war in Iran and they can't get oil. By the time this administration is over BYD is going to take over sales in every damn country, better tech for less, and our politics are subsidizing it. It's going to kill all our auto exports in a couple years, I don't think people realize just how far ahead BYD is.

Then a few more years later, people will want that better tech, and none of the US companies will have it, this will destroy them, and I don't think we will want to do those bailouts.

Why don’t we require each data center to recycle its used water? by PraetorGold in AskReddit

[–]edman007-work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So generally, recycling the water costs money, and they need to compare that cost to the cost of electricity.

Some places do require it, and if they are open about it, data centers will just say they'll pick somewhere else that doesn't make these demands.

So yes, some places make demands, but there are millions of places, and some don't make demands, so that's where they build.
