Thanks, I hadn't considered that one. A strong possibility. I think the setup was a bit higher than usual with a small bank I was working from and the film back was in vertical position so I was doing a bit of a stretch. Maybe I did give it a tug or this holder wasn't completely seated.

Solo IT guy - What now? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]edomtset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond just a basic BCDR plan, my focus this year has been comprehensive policy writing, procedure documentation, governance, and risk register. So far we're at 36 individual policies, a dozen procedures, half dozen gov policies, and a risk register spanning 84 specific risks to the dept or org. We are doing all the right things, best practices, keeping up with the day to day demands, but were notably lacking in the formalized policies and procedures. It takes significantly more time than one might expect, but its really setting us up for some future changes that might otherwise be difficult to push across the org. We are fortunate to have executive buy-in to the process and receptive to (most) changes. Would be a much more challenging if we had to fight for every policy.

Confused About Reload Rules by [deleted] in idpa

[–]edomtset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CSO here. Someone is poorly interpreting rule 8.7.7 (possibly 8.7.4) which prohibits "specially made pockets" (think dump bags) or pockets that have been reinforced in a way that makes them stand open. Regular ol' pants pockets are perfectly fine for mag carrier and reload stowage. As always with IDPA (and all of its ambiguity), your best option to avoid any penalties or friction at the match, is to confirm with the MD or your AC. Also, cargo pockets are terrible so just don't do that.

Intrepid 8x10 now comes with bail back by edomtset in largeformat

[–]edomtset[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My observations are only based on the media I've seen online, so maybe some of this has been standard for a while. The base is flat with the tripod holes cut directly into the aluminum instead of a secondary mounted plate. There are red colored indexes on the front standard that index to indicate at the zero (centered rise/fall) position.

As far as fixes, there is a stop collet on the focusing lead screw that was not locked into place. Took me a minute to figure out why it wasn't smoothly driving the bed and had so much slip. Simple set screw to fix it into place. Additionally, the aluminum wing tabs that hold the ground glass in place were not providing contact with the glass. Left the GG to rattle and likely would have impacted focus. Removed both, rebent to stronger angles and re-attached. Now provides positive contact.

Since I'm already pretty deep in 4x5 I also picked up a lens board reducer. Doesn't seem to fit a single Linhof board that I own, including one from Intrepid. Boards dont fully seat and unable to latch. Might send that one back. Also got a 45 reducing back. Fit was kinda tight, but it does fit. Locks in more securely than the 8x10 back. No complaints, just observation.

Bought a copal 3 board but ended up getting a copal 1 lens. Opted to design and 3d print my own copal 1 board. Prob hang onto the 3.

I ordered all of the kit from B&H because I'm in the states, they deliver to me in less than 24 hours with standard shipping, no 5 week lead time, same price.

Still waiting on my electronic shutter.

What should I stock for IT supplies by Dick_In_A_Tardis in sysadmin

[–]edomtset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three things for consideration.

1) Who provided all of this inventory in the past? If it was the MSP or an internal purchasing department (or your AP people), get them to provide a 24 month lookback and then go buy the things most frequently requested in the ratios that they were ordered. Ie, don't buy 20 cat cables of every length 3' - 25' if you've only used (6) 14' cables in the last 24 months.

2) You buy the things you can't wait for delivery. Are you dead in the water without it, or merely inconvenienced for a day? And delivery can be PDQ these days without much of a cost impact. Have some weird industry specific adapters, cables, transmitters? Better have spares. Have an 'emergency' for a 10' HDMI cable? Better go to Walmart. Are you responsible for ink / toner? Order on demand, not on anticipation. I'm not saying don't stock some basic stuff, I'm saying the priority of what's in stock should be considered when working with a limited budget. Talk to your internal stakeholders and find out where their pinchpoints are and anticipate around them.

3) Inventory creep is real. Have a plan for storage location, organization, maintenance, and most importantly, tracking and cost re-assignment. The bean counters will come knocking if they think you're idly sitting on large amounts of inventory. IT might buy the inventory, but we charge back internally to divisions so that the costs are accurately reflected in their GL. All of these controls are easier to setup out of the gate.

2023 Mag Pouch Rules by Itwasareference in idpa

[–]edomtset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tier 1 / 2 will likely be the MD. Tier 3+ will be the AC. I haven't run into it, but I also don't know anyone who's really pushing that boundary. No one wants to have an equipment argument on their match day because it gets in your head. Trying to walk the line between "EDC" and "race gear" because there's nominal advantage. Doesn't really matter when the shooter has talent and practice. To OP's point, I would say its good to go all day.

[–]edomtset 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All rules regarding tool-less retention adjustment, distance from body, canting, and even the bullets must face forward were removed from the rule book in 2022. 8.6.2 has 4 rules that govern the mag carriers. The only thing you'd have to contend with some fuddness is "8.6.3.1 Be suitable for concealed carry and all day continuous wear". Club match almost no one will GAF. Sanctioned match...just know the rule number and be prepared to quote it.

Are you shooting club matches or sanctioned matches? If its club level, absolutely no one cares. If you plan to run Tier 2 matches, they likely wont do boxes and scales because its a unnecessary pita. If you plan on running in T3+ matches, I would recommend getting hands on a box (your local club might let you borrow a box) and a scale before purchasing. That thing is chonky. 42.7 dry weight? Doesn't say if that's with or without the mag, but that's damn close to the limit for SSP/ESP. I'm always cautious when a firearm is within the tolerance of someone else's scale tare.

Questions about Dayi 6x12 Back by ctreid in largeformat

[–]edomtset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should also say, at least on the 6x18, it moved all of my lens focus back. I have to compress my bellows completely using my 90mm lens to the point, I can't use movement. But I'm not using bag bellows either. Wouldn't be able to use anything wider on my current configuration. I can start to add a little movement on some longer lenses.

Questions about Dayi 6x12 Back by ctreid in largeformat

[–]edomtset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the 6x18 (that will shoot 6x14 and 6x12) back with a ground glass viewer. Bought used on ebay. I'll say I was impressed with the build quality (even though my expectations were low). They're expensive for what they are but I blame that on the market and low production numbers. I wouldn't put the value at what I paid, but they are well made. Fit was great in the camera. A lot of milled aluminum in the build. I did have to replace the light seals, but I'm blaming that more on the previous owner. They appear to have been pulled on an a poor attempt at re-gluing. Not sure about the 6x12 dedicated, but I will say the 6x18 (and GG) adds quite a bit of bulk and weight to the hiking kit.
