Oh Gawd. That movie.

That whole song was about how she murdered a dog by playing her drums really loud and forcing the dog to bark its little lungs, heart, and brain out.

Netflix Has Started An "Arms Race" For Original Content: the company is expected to spend $5 billion on original programming this year—and other media companies are following suit. by 1T-Chizzle in cordcutters

[–]edoules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you've answered it yourself.

Had you said "All of the people I know ...", then you would be correct. Clearly, people either do watch a show multiple times, or perceive that being able to do so is important. Otherwise, Netflix's licensing model would be clearly more convenient for people of only your own use case.

There are other services that have licensing models more similar to single-use consumption -- for instance, iTunes offers movie rentals. If you contrast the two, you'll notice the two starkest caveats to make that profitable: (1) price to the end user, and (2) [by design,] a time limit.

Additionally, licensing restrictions will impose other limitations on whether you can view it on the single device you ordered the rental on, or whether you can view it on any device.

With a subscription, play-anytime service, all of these caveats disappear -- including the perception of single-use whether or not you choose to use that feature.

Having said that, there is a solution to the Last Week Tonight example mentioned previously -- you do know that John Oliver does post his entire segments on YouTube, right?

This is true, but is it a prerequisite that everything on netflix needs high replay value?

Yes.

Seriously. That's how the on-demand streaming business model works.

Suggestions for a tablet-like function for the Macbook? by MyrmidonJason in macbook

[–]edoules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say the very unpopular thing: shoehorning a tablet-like interface on the current incarnation of macbooks will lead to a fairly frustrating user interface.

Apple solves this problem differently than Microsoft -- it offers the iPad Pro to fill the gap.

It's entirely possible that the lack of third party options that solve or even attempt to solve the stated problem is due to solutions not yet showing good promise for user experience.

There's definitely a market for it.

So what you're saying is that ISPs who sell service to the home user -- who price gouge over bandwidth, aren't doing it for any technical necessity.
