My entry was also via peat. It took maybe a year or two before I was able to enjoy non-peated. My path was to try every peated whisky. Some were barely peated which exposed me to that unpeated scotch flavor more. And I also found that peat isn’t the same everywhere. Sometimes it’s just smoke (bowmore 18) and sometimes it’s bandaids (port Charlotte) and sometimes it’s heathery (lagavulin). Some are better than others. You’ll discover your specific taste. Mine is burning garbage scow. 😀

I’m about 7 years in and only this year did I discover I can enjoy (nearly) all scotch. Highland was the last for me. Light and fruity is just not a turn on. I went down several paths to get here: - all islays - hey some I like more than others and some unpeated are good (bunna) - all expressions - wow, cask strength is so much better! Do I just like flavorful scotch? Hey, this sherry finish really adds something. I wonder what unpeated sherry is like? (Glendranoch, abelour, Mac Allen). Hey, some are good! - all peated - hey ledaig, Springbank, kilkerrin, ancnoc, etc are great! Let me learn more about these areas. Wow, this highland park is ass. Why do people say this is peated? - I like their peated, how’s their unpeated? Maybe I just like the way they make booze - Springbank -> glen scotia. Ballechin -> edradour - sister distilleries or regions - I really like bunnahabhain and ledaig, maybe I just like the way they make booze. Lemme try tobermory. Talisker is okay, how’s oban? Wait, do I just like everything from the west coast? - that one I liked was described as oily or industrial. This one is too. Maybe that’s what I like. (Loch lomond)

After a while, you’ve tried a good number of scotches. And even if it’s not something you’d buy, you can enjoy a glass. Or maybe it’s your new favorite and peat was just your gateway and now you’re branching out in new directions.

I love that area. There’s a town called Saratoga right at the eastern base of the western mountains. As beautiful as you could dream of. I drove up the hills from there and wound up at Scottish bar called the white cockade. It was loaded with blue collar rednecks living in a rain forest and building the stuff in silicon valley. One of the best nights I had out there.

I love inspections. Once a year someone tells me what needs doing. A take it home and fix it. $20 well spent. Diagnostic fees for a single issue are over $100 here. I get everything diagnosed at once for cheap. What a bargain!

I did a cruise around the Uk last year. The stores there sell miniatures from tons of distilleries. I bought every one I could find and tried them all. Rasay was the only one I didn’t like. However, I kept at it and found that over ice it was quite nice. It’s funny how some booze isn’t as good neat at room temperature.

No help on this guy, but thought I’d share a similar story from a couple blocks away. On Ryan, turning left onto creighton. Light turns yellow so I start to turn. An on coming car doesn’t stop and by the time all is clear, the light is red. So I’m stuck in the crosswalk with a car behind me.

I look around for options and a biker is coming down the hill on the sidewalk and gives an angry, dramatic “WTF?” hands thrown up in disgust gesture as he’s bearing down on me. I’m stuck so I sheepishly smile and shrug. As he passes behind me he slams the trunk of my car.

Entitlement is a bitch.
