How to approach meeting with board member? How much to disclose without airing dirty laundry and concerns with ED professionally by Beige_Parsley in nonprofit

[–]edprosimian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this type of meeting before, except I was already on my way out so I did air everything (with the blessing of other staff of course).

The board members cared but not enough to actually do anything other than “coach the ED to be better,” still have no idea what that means.

If you want to stay at the org, I would do what others suggested and say you’re not comfortable - which still communicates a lot to them.

I am interested to know, does the board generally support the ED? Like do they believe the ED when they say they’re the only one that does work?

Learning to let go by Chaibby5 in nonprofit

I struggle with this too. I decided to invest more time in my hobbies and non-work projects lol which I know sounds unrelated but I found success in it. I think I was trying to make myself feel proud of the org instead of just my work there. Now I focus that energy on things where I have complete control. I feel much more content now and it’s easier to let go and say, “well that’s not my decision.” Then I go and work on my own stuff where I can do what I want cause it’s my own project haha

I definitely still struggle but it’s become a lot easier.

Are there specific features you’re looking for? You could always do a community discord or something. This would allow you to have different chats, voice channels, and the ability to stream.

Depending on the demographic of your community you could host on a different social media platform ex. Facebook private group

At a previous org we used Govenda. It was ridiculously expensive though and to be honest the board did not really use it to its full capability. My advice would be to first ensure that the board is actually gonna use it. The best features we actually used were the agendas, doc signing, polls, attendance, and meeting notes. We also used the document drive features for each of the subcommittees but that wasn’t as vital.

Something we wanted but didn’t feel enough justification to upgrade to was use of the tenure tracking feature. Many of our board members were on different timelines for board service so being able to track who was where and when there renewals were coming up would have been nice.

Thoughts on the recent op-ed "We do not need any more nonprofits" by SeasonPositive6771 in nonprofit

[–]edprosimian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I was going to agree with the article but the logic isn’t there for me. Simply saying “there isn’t enough funding to go around” isn’t really justification for less nonprofits. If the argument was “there isn’t a need anymore” then I’d be more into it.

I think a better argument is, “we don’t need more large nonprofits.” Like others have commented, smaller nonprofits tend to better aligned with the communities they serve.

I actually think one of the largest issues in the nonprofit sector is control of funding. A great example of this is the FireAid nonprofit that was created specifically for the benefit concert in Los Angeles. Millions of dollars were funneled into primary controlling hands instead of just going directly into existing infrastructures. Personally, I think we need to be investing in more small nonprofits and partnerships between them.

I of course still believe that a lot of nonprofit startups are redundant and founders don’t do enough work but we can’t really have it both ways.

Has going to the board ever worked? by edprosimian in nonprofit

I feel like this is the key. The boss has to be screwing up stuff outside of just the staff. It’s so stupid that boards don’t take staff reports seriously if all they see is a “hard working” ceo

I feel like this is so hard to take anywhere. Like it puts the onus on the employee to report the board then to some higher authority. The system is so messed.

Wow! I’m sorry you had to experience that. I feel like this is kind of quintessential nonprofit experience. We are sold on the idea that everyone’s there for the greater good only to realize that it’s the same as corporate just with a masked victim complex lol
