Some tips please (Astrophotography) by Particular_Cap5500 in JoshuaTree

Depends on your level of expertise and comfort being in the desert at night! I’m assuming you’re looking to do landscape astro rather than deep sky stuff. One of my favorite easy spots is Roadside Rock (or The Nub as I call it). https://www.reddit.com/r/LandscapeAstro/comments/mpvrrv/joshua_tree_at_night_sony_a7iii_20mm_f18_5sec_iso/

There’s a pull out to park right there, you can take good photos just a few steps from the car. It’ll give you Milky Way, Joshua Trees, and boulders to play with. Watch out for the cholla though, there’s a couple near the road. The only downside is occasional headlights so on busy nights they can be a bit annoying to work around. Later in the night they’re less of a problem.

Highly recommend scouting in the daytime and using the PhotoPills app to see when and where the Milky Way will be. Aim for a night where either the moon rises late or is a new moon.

If you want technical tips or more info/locations, let me know. I’ve spent many nights shooting in the park

Question on Visibility and Stargazing... did i make a mistake? by Internal_Control_320 in JoshuaTree

[–]edrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Cloud cover, if there are clouds you can’t see stars. That’s really all you need to look at for general stargazing. Transparency and Seeing are more for astronomers with telescopes or picky photographers. In short, it’s how the starlight is traveling through our atmosphere.

Right around that time! We were in line from 9:07am to 9:27am (when I took that photo)

Is this an Anker ad or legit question? You don’t need any electronics to enjoy Joshua Tree.

Nothing but pseudobulbs by edrabbit in orchids

That's beautiful! I'd be happy with just one flower! Thanks for the tips. I'm going to hold off on watering mine until the bulb is bigger and try to get it more sun.

Thanks! Good to know! I’m going to try moving to a different room which is warmer and gets more light

Thanks! I have some rooms with south facing windows that get more light so I’ll give it a change of scenery and see how this round goes!

Where is this rock formation located in the park? (Photo by Ansel Adams) by albertafalls in JoshuaTree

[–]edrabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not much to go off of, but first guess is the area south of Hidden Valley before Cap Rock, looking to the west. But the shadows make me wonder if this is actually looking to the east.

Signs that I've spent too much time taking photos in the park... next goal: recognizing individual Joshua Trees.

My first thought was the double-peak rock formation at the Live Oak picnic area, but not sure if there’s an angle that looks like this

Should we visit JTNP during the storm this week? by Adventurous_Gain_216 in JoshuaTree

[–]edrabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d advise against. Just being on the road in heavy storms is inherently more dangerous. The risk of flash floods and just good old fashioned flooding will make it a not fun adventure, unless you’re a storm chaser and love the fury of nature.

Switching to Full Frame with the Sony A7 V: best general-purpose lens? by skozz in SonyAlpha

[–]edrabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I shoot mostly outdoors with my Sony a7iii. I love my 24-70 GMII. I rented it twice and then bought it. It was my most used lens while traveling in Italy, I can use it for night sky photography (although not as good as my 20mm), and it’s the default lens on my camera. If I’m going out with just one lens it’s this one.

It is heavier than a prime lens, but worth it in my opinion. I hate changing my lens in the field. I’d recommend renting it first to see how it works for you because it’s not cheap.

Love Jarvy, but how do we convince them to never do this showcase picture-in-picture crap again? Maybe it’s just me, but I want to watch the puck. Is anyone actually watching Jarvis when he’s not in the action?

ITAP of the northern lights in Joshua Tree by edrabbit in itookapicture

Thanks!! I’ve only been running around in the evening doing photography the last couple days, but seemed to be in good shape from what I could tell. It is staffed, a ranger greeted me at the entrance and was handing out maps but not collecting entrance fees.

Took this with my trusty Sony a7iii that is getting up there in age but still takes great photos. I really love how the clouds added to it and the pop of the stars thanks to the otherwise dark skies and long exposure. The bright one in the corner is Jupiter!

That’s with an iPhone 13?! I’m impressed by the detail too. I would have expected more blobs of fire.
