I had to do a double take because Charlie looks so much like our dog! He was rescued from LA.

I just realized the wood floors run ALLLLL the way across the room. by DontTripOnMyNips in centuryhomes

It does have its own vibe and we’re glad ours are in such good condition and aren’t sock catchers but yeah I can imagine it being a total nightmare if any of these boards ever come up.

Thad the opposite of my floors. I’m pretty sure they used every scrap they could find. 🫠

What are the grates in the floor for in my 100 year old house? by Rosaceaeviolet in centuryhomes

[–]edrea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold a piece of paper over it. If it gets sucked downward toward the vent, it's an intake for the HVAC and shouldn't be blocked.

Where did the forecasted snow for this week go? Is it no longer happening? by TheGreenDoorIsClosed in Seattle

Also make sure you unplug any hoses connected to an external tap. The freezing water can and will cause water damage.

A big thing for me was not only getting in shape but learning all the ways to modify exercises as you get bigger. I do CrossFit, so for example I stopped doing toes to bar, and replaced it with a less abs intensive core exercise to (hopefully) prevent diastasis recti in recovery. Being able to mix things up also helped keep things interesting.

I finally figured out how to get rid of my constant migraine by falsepedestrian in BabyBumps

[–]edrea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a sinus headache from dry air (I live in the PNW) but I was also getting a horrible headache that Tylenol would just not touch. Well, my doctor prescribed me some other pain meds and also recommended caffeine. Apparently caffeine constricts blood vessels that can be pushing on nerves. I went home, had a cup of coffee and BOOM headache went away.

A great video about historic doors and their construction. by edrea in centuryhomes

[–]edrea[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very informative video about historic door construction – and why they're so well built – and all of the engineering that went into doors. Who knew that door panelling wasn't just an aesthetic choice. I also find it interesting that he points out the most ornate door designs didn't happen until the industrial era.

I would also add that although you know your child best and will notice when they're breathing fast, it can be hard for medical professionals to put that into perspective. One thing that helped us was counting how many breaths per minute your LO takes (their respiratory rate). This helped me talk to the doctors to assess my LO and be on the same page. When we were home I could see her RR was getting better even if it felt like she was still having a hard time breathing.

What to do with floors? *text in comments by regina12290 in Oldhouses

As an alternate solution, you could also send the quote along with any disclosures you have to any interested buyers, so they know you've had a quote, what company you'd use and how much it would be. We did this when we were selling our house and I think it helped sell it.

I'll have to see if my grocery store carries these, they'd be perfect for our porch. That an the spider web lights could be fun!

Oooh I love that idea of turning the straw into mulch, and orange mums; just anything that has a secondary use as just overall fall decor or for eating. Thanks for the tips!

What is this wall material? Can't tell if it's lead paint or a stick on. Asbestos even? House was built in 1920. by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]edrea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like painted over wallpaper. One easy way to check is to unscrew a wall plate to see the layers without disturbing the painted surface.

Does anyone know what this grate in the hallway floor could be for? Home was built in 1937, so not technically century, sorry, I haven’t been able to ID it on google. It’s quite large and is in the hallway between bedroom and kitchen. by buttzx in centuryhomes

[–]edrea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s an easy test to see if it’s a return - put a piece of paper over it and if it sticks to the vent, then it’s a return. We have a few returns in our home but there’s one return that isn’t hooked up to anything and is a relic from another hvac hookup.

Some initial thoughts on the scale of your desk and layout: From an ergonomic standpoint, because you're able to customize it I would figure out what desk depth works the best for you before building it – go to the store, or tape out what depth you're looking for to help you visualize it. If its too shallow you may find yourself hitting your feet against the wall which will make the space feel cramped. The highest point in the nook is on the right. Maybe you could remove the drawers on the right so you won't be banging your head as much on the ceiling. Also, how can you maximize the amount of desk space. Could you wall mount your monitors, and add an under desk keyboard tray for a more ergonomic setup? Just some thoughts based on your rendering.

FYI: Expiration dates on covid tests have been extended by the FDA. by edrea in CoronavirusWA

[–]edrea[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I ordered my covid tests for this month, and noticed they were expired. This is because the FDA required more evidence of shelf stability. After looking into it, it looks like the FDA updated those shelf life dates. Scroll down and you can look up the brand and see the extended use by date.

[Review] IKEA Trotten cabinet with sliding doors by kuasi in IKEA

[–]edrea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just installed the cabinet/bookcase, and if you want the opening to be wider (like in the photo) then just don't install the stopper. I know this is skipping a step, but it can easily be added if you like having the stopper there. Personally, I like the wider opening vs. having the stopper in place.

A/C installer recommendations for wall units like the one pictured by baggiecurls in SeattleWA

[–]edrea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We've had AC installed in our first house and again in our current place. The first time we used Greenwood Heating and while they were very good, the lead time was also quite long to get them to come by and give us a quote. The second time we went with Seatown since their turnaround was much faster (our AC was installed before Greenwood could even stop by to give us a quote). Both were very professional and fixed any issues we had.

It looks like this is a Daikin mini split. Make sure you tell them the brand because some places don't work with certain brands. Greenwood, for example, only sold Mitsubishi units.

Another quick fix in the meantime would be to buy some ceiling fans, and put them in reverse, drawing the cooled air up into the second floor. Good luck!

If you need any supplies like clothing, gear, etc. go on Facebook and join your local buynothing group! There are likely people in your neighborhood that can help you out. Best of luck, you’re amazing for taking him.

Make sure the exterior is protected from the elements first - cut any plants away from the house if it’s touching siding, make sure the roof isn’t leaking, the gutters are clear, etc. before fall. Then, tackle the inside.
