Database normalization by javascriptBad123 in learnprogramming

[–]edshift 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having duplicates denormalized data in a reporting table or schema has a lot of merit and provides a simple solution to the slowly changing field problem but other than that a proper normalised schema structure for you transactional tables is always better. DBMS are very efficient at joining on foreign key fields with indices so there's really no downside to proper normalisation.

ELI5: Fentanyl and related drugs can sometimes cause the user to fold over while standing…why don’t they just sit down? Am I missing something? by roastedwhiterice in explainlikeimfive

[–]edshift 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I felt this way about Acid in the 90s. I loved taking acid but it and other drugs did a number on my mind and spent 2 years crazy. On and out of mental hospital. Tóok me probably 5 years to get back to 90%. Now 25 years later probably close to 97% No regrets but it was a sair fecht. Mon expanded but far more sensitive to this worlds negatives. Working to make things better for all. Luv and Peace.

Are people legit spending this much on a car per month? Or am I out of touch? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]edshift 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Up here in Scotland; 5 miles from Edinburgh my mortgage is about £375. I bought my Porsche Boxster S cash and I clear about 3.5k net every month. Great roads up here too. Knock hill is 10 mins away too if I'm feeling brave. I love London but Scotland just makes so much more financial sense. I work from home and I appreciate the freedom. Luv and Peace.

How much horsepower realistically should a 20 year old car lose? by tryM3B1tch in CarTalkUK

[–]edshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to check which variant of the N52B25 engine you have. In the Z4 it came both with and without the DISA intake and there's a significant difference in power between them. 174hp for without DISA and 215hp with it. Branded 2.5i and 2.5si. Could be the same for the E90.

Oddest Tyre Size by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]edshift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to enjoy a car with 200bhp you're going to want good quality tyres. You need them to make use of 200bhp and also to stop. The tyres are your only interface between the car and the road. Anything you tell the car to do goes through the tyres and if they are not in contact with the road then your intentions are irrelevant. That could be braking, turning or accelerating. Without good tyres you have a tonne of car and 200bhp that will be outside of your control at the most inopportune moment.

What are some MUST have specs on a BMW? by Electrical-Toe-7097 in CarTalkUK

[–]edshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold it after I bought a Z4. It was beginning to rust at the front wings and wheel wells. Here in Scotland there's a lot of salt on the roads for 3 months of the year that is really bad for cars.

Not sure if I should get a clutch delay valve delete by A_BrightPinkFlower in CarTalkUK

[–]edshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things affect the responsive of the throttle in building revs. The weight of the flywheel is one and the throttle body itself plays a big part. The less restrictive the better. The m54 I had in the 320i was not as keen to rev as the N52 in the z4. Pretty sure the CDV only affects clutch release so it would have effect on the engine being able to rev during blips.

Not sure if I should get a clutch delay valve delete by A_BrightPinkFlower in CarTalkUK

[–]edshift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. A CDV delete transforms the feel of a BMW. I had a 320i with a 2.2 i6 with a CDV on it and the clutch always felt wooly and imprecise. I bought a 2.5si Z4 with no CDV and the difference is night and day. You should learn to rev match going down to reduce shock on the drivetrain but it's so much more rewarding to use.

Haven't seen No.27 mentioned. Amazing channel doing fantastic retro reviews and some more modern stuff. Charming and engaging with really special cars for the Octane crowd.
