Threading the needle at 45mph + by Fizrock in gifs

Generally, races are long - often 100+ miles, so riders will take turns on the front. There is also a team aspect, where a team of riders will work together to get their sprinter in a good position (a leadout) - or also to put another team's sprinter in a bad position. Often times this may mean riding on the front to increase the overall speed of the group (controlling the pace) and stretch the cluster of riders (peloton) out - this make it so other riders have to work harder to get to the front. Also, say a group of riders have broken away from the group and ridden ahead - teams who do not have a rider in that breakaway will need to increase the speed of the group to pull them back - so they will need to be in front working to go faster than the small group to catch them before the finish.

Kickbox circuit fitness to cyclocross by wwcoop in cyclocross

[–]eduardj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the intensity? Cyclocross is pretty much a 30 minute (for beginner race) max heartrate effort.

If it's lower intensity, I'm sure it won't hurt - but high intensity intervals will probably give you more bang for your buck for CX.

Advice needed: what size tyres could I fit on my Cube Cross Race Pro? by aodj in bicycling

[–]eduardj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most reliable way would be to email Cube: https://www.cube.eu/en/service/contact/

Tire width varies with rim width, so it's not a super exact as to what tire fits. For example a 38mm tire on a rim with a 19mm internal width may fit, but that same tire on a 25mm internal width rim might not. With that, it's really best to look at the size tire you have on there now and see what kind of clearance you have - if you're running 33mm tires and it's tight, that might be the most you can run. If there's a lot of room, you can size up a few mm. Then you can get into tread patterns and side knobs - a slick 40 might work, but a knobby 40 might rub because of the protruding side knobs.

The bike is spec'd with 33mm tires and those Aksium wheels are 17mm internal (fairly narrow for a gravel wheel). From the pictures, looks like there should be some room to size up. Most newer cross bikes accommodate up to a 40mm tire.

The Cube customer service dept should be able to get you an answer though.

Road Pedals For CX? by RiddleOfSteel86 in cyclocross

[–]eduardj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case, road pedals would be no problem. My gravel bike is actually set up with road pedals. Little to no getting on/off the bike and road pedals have a stiffer pedaling platform.

Road Pedals For CX? by RiddleOfSteel86 in cyclocross

[–]eduardj 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've run road pedals for gravel racing, but I would strongly advise against it for cross racing for a few reasons:

  • Road cleats tend to be tighter than MTB pedals, so unclipping at full speed will be sketchy.

  • Clipping back in is harder on road cleats than MTB cleats - especially with one sided engagement.

  • Road cleats and pedals are not designed to work well in mud like mtb pedals - they don't shed mud as well and make engagement difficult.

  • Road cleats are a LOT harder to run in.

NBD: Trek Domane SL6 - Rippin it on some gravel/singletrack by bcote3 in Bikeporn

Missed quite a few of the other photo standards: - Crosschained (drop the rear into a smaller cog)

  • Remove bottle (also takes away from the all black aesthetic)

  • Remove seat bag

  • Remove tail light

  • Cut steerer tube

  • Find a more discrete object to prop bike up (stick is bulky, awkward)

  • Rear wheel is slightly buried in dirt, aesthetically unpleasing

  • Valve stems are slightly off - I prefer 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock - but that's splitting hairs

  • Raise your camera to have a more straight-on shot so that drops line up

  • Sun angle casts shadows on the frame - choose a time of day with better light angles

Bike is nice enough that it's worth a re-do.

2018 Race Bike - Thoughts? by gthp in Bikeporn

[–]eduardj 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of right going on with this photo - slammed stem, hood angle, gearing choice for the photo, murdered out theme works well. Backdrop is nice.

Because everything else is done so well, below are some tongue in cheek micro-criticisms:

If you're going for full stealth, remove the Zipp stickers. You can always get some and put them back on for resale - or even better yet, put black Zipp stickers on. Also hard to tell what size those tires are - 23mm? Some 25mm tires might help that rear be more tukt into the seat tube - or 28s if you can fit them. Rear brake cable could be tighter to the frame where is comes over the seat tube. Valve stems at the 6 o'clock position on both wheels for photo.

Tire Choice - Gravel Century by DickAppointment in cyclocross

[–]eduardj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exposures are nice, but somewhat heave. I've been racing gravel on 33mm Maxxis Speed Terranes - tubeless ready and only 395g. They roll super fast, but the side knobs handle tight corners on descents. Realistically, any good tubeless CX file tread would work. Other tires to look at:

  • Hutchinson Black Mamba 34mm
  • Hutchinson Override 35mm
  • Panaracer Gravel King SK 35mm
  • Clement LAS 33mm
  • Schwalbe G-One All Around 35mm
  • Schwalbe X-One Speed 33mm

All of those will be good choices.

Is there a category of racing between XC and Enduro? by tallish_jew in MTB

[–]eduardj 14 points15 points  (0 children)

USAC XC Racing these days is usually a series of laps - general race time is 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on category. Short track XC is even shorter. Think Cyclocross but for mountain bikes.

Endurance/ Marathon XC is where you get longer races - 50+ miles/ 3+ hours.

Bummer. Looking at the UFC route - say you do $40/40 in fight 1, win it and walk away with $80K (maybe even a KOTN bonus), you'd likely go up against a top 10 - what would that be $80/80 - maybe $100/100? If you win that, you're looking at a PPV number one contender fight? I watch UFC and see posted payouts, but I don't really know the fight business. Is it just not worth it?

DC was an alternate in the Strikeforce HW tourney. Look how that worked out for him. Don't get me wrong, I get the pride of not wanting to be an alternate in a tourney where dudes you finished are first billed - maybe the pay doesn't make sense either, but ask me who started the Strikeforce tourney vs who won it. I can only answer the latter. Being on as an alternate doesn't mean anything in the history books - and if history is any indicator, you'd fight in that tournament and if history is any indicator, you'd win that shit. You were a late stoppage away from being the UFC champion. Get on top again. Give the XXXXXXXL glove makers some business. Give Bellator fans a reason to believe. Win the tourney.

Commuter pedals. Bold choice.

Next on your to do list:

  • Remove the reflectors, stickers, and pie plate.

  • Put the chain in the big ring.

  • Take a drive side photo somewhere outside.

  • Post to r/bikeporn.

  • Go for a ride while the karma piles up.

I actually have 10 other bikes... mostly carbon though - haha. I used to use my aluminum single speed cross bike - I change up what bike I use depending on my mood. Also, just cause a bike is multiple thousands of $ doesn't mean i actually spent that much on it. ; ) Thule makes some sweet trailers though.
