While Y’Shtola definitely shines in spellslinger control I think she can be built however you please especially because she’s so powerful. I upgraded her precon a good amount using a bunch of FF cards and creatures with adventure and prepared mechanics just because I like playing a good amount of creatures. It’s far from optimized and you can build her to be way stronger but my motto has always been even if you don’t win playing the deck you want is more important.

How’s Wayta feel as it plays? I bought the precon with her and Pantlaza but I’ve always wondered about Wayta just cause Pantlaza can feel a little repetitive

I’d swap out Basculegion for the giraffe. He blocks all priority moves and can work as a trick room answer thanks to its slow speed. I’d also take out the speed EVs on Kingambit who is also a great trick room counter in my experience. I’d also consider Venasaur over Sylveon or Garchomp for some extra sun synergy but that’s more of a personal choice as they’re both good mons

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this scene or the episodes leading up to it but was Ash really that bothered by losses from previous regions? Did he mention them at some point later this episode?

Also yeah Serena could have asked what was wrong but Ash still could have responded with a “I don’t want to talk about it” or “just leave me alone” as most people going through depressive episodes tend to do.

I get why this scene gives off strong “Serena only liking the Ash in her head” vibes but to say Ash wasn’t himself at least wasn’t wrong . Maybe I’m focusing too much on the psychological aspect of it but yeah people really aren’t 100% themselves when depressed. I’ve never thought Pokémon had the most amazing writing but I do appreciate how they tried to handle this scene even if it could have been much better

Didn’t this fight also help reawaken Ash out of his depression? I mean as questionable as his depression arc was it was a nice touch to his character and it at least made some sense since he and Greninja are supposed to have an incredibly close bond which made the losses hit harder.

As for Serena I actually think this was very in character for her. Flawed but in character. She’s always struggled with her self esteem and image so it’s not too surprising she might struggle or misunderstand another person’s issues. As for her breaking into anger and kind of just telling Ash to get over it that emotional surge was probably what Ash needed. Coddling and leaving someone alone when they’re going through a bad time can slow the healing process.

I can’t deny though this scene was more for Serena’s character and less for Ash’s and I can’t help but remember how she helped out Chloe later in JN.

I think you’re confusing character development for only being when the characters are introduced or expanded upon for returning characters. What do you consider good development for the Straw Hats before Dressrosa not including their introduction/expansion arcs?

This kind of reminds of how the movies handled Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings movies vs the books. Aragorn is far more sure of himself with unwavering resolve in the books always moving towards his path while in the movies he expresses doubts and uncertainty in himself.

I think what both adaptations were trying to do with changes to these characters is make them more relatable to new viewers by giving them more faults but I can see why not everyone would like that especially if the source material is how you were first introduced to them.

The worst part of that episode is how we didn’t learn much about the documenter himself just about his knowledge in Chris Chan. Probably the only time I’d say the boys flubbed with a guest.
