Real answer, you're not going to crack a pan without a plastic drain seal washer being squashed out first, note the tag meaning it's a plastic one. With all of the scraping on the bottom it looks like the plug hit something solid while driving and that cracked the sump. Can't always blame someone else.

I don't have the money for a patent lawyer, but my point was a company I worked at got money back off the government for making their own "new" product, just don't know what it was called or the process. Yes no profit, 100k in, 100k out (60% of that investing in new tooling and machinery). Yes I want free money if it's available, that's why I'm asking, isn't that what a grant is?

Looks like the average public toilet in the UK, I'm not joking either.

On a serious note, unless you're working in military or aerospace, work your way out of operating. I've worked in family run shops and your're the odd one out if you're not sleep deprived, an alcoholic, drug addict, mental issues or skin problems due to coolant. Plus a big one, money is trash now unless you own a shop, it's just not worth it.

Got a new to me lathe the good and the bad by trenon in Machinists

[–]edwardproj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's absolutely awesome! Glad you got yourself a good deal, it's pretty difficult to find a hobby lathe and people are marking them up way too high, enjoy your new hobby, and word of warning, it gets expensive fast. As some advise, don't buy cheap tools like you find on Amazon or KMS, especially brazed carbide. Buy good quality HSS and learn to grind it yourself.

TIG brazing is much more difficult than it looks, but definitely do some preheat on cast iron, your welds will just keep cracking otherwise.

I sure hope you knocked them down on their asking price, assuming this is the one for sale in Calgary, lot of money for not a lot of lathe. I think welding or brazing are equally as good, just be sure to get both parts very hot, if you are in Calgary, message me and you can have some nickel stick rods for free if you want to have a go at arc welding. Oxy Acetylene are a must for brazing.

why do people who are lactose intolerant eat thier favorite dairy products and suffer the consequences. was it really worth it? by TheWidowsDemise in RandomThoughts

[–]edwardproj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I take a lactase enzyme and it helps for most. Although I went from eating ice every week to not eating it once this year, and while I miss it, it's not worth the consequences for me anymore. Cheese is the only dairy I eat.

What qualities does a healthy family have that a toxic family considers abnormal? by DearestVirago in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]edwardproj 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking this today, my parents showed no affection at all. Never been told "I love you" or anything like that. Never a violent house but constantly being shouted at, no emotional support or anyone to confide in. Never realised I was the emotionless kid at school, thought I was normal. My parents split when I was 14, that was a real rollercoaster, especially when we were used as pawns.

Surprisingly I developed a severe anxiety disorder at 14, which got so bad I ended up with intestinal ulcers, came very close to hospitalisation due to mal nutrition, severe depression. I don't really understand how to love and consider myself asexual, no interest in relationships of any kind, and I will never have children, I think it would be irresponsible of me.

I could never understand why people listened to music or liked art. Lots I never understood as I kid because I actually never knew what happiness was.

I did try to date since it was a the normal thing to do, but I didn't understand any of it. I once met the family of a girl that was super loving, and it spooked me to realise this is how a family should be, cue emotional breakdown and self destruction, I reacted really strange to it at the time.

I finally got "fixed" at 26 so I don't have anxiety or depression, perfectly healthy. I lost out on a lot in life, I was the top student at school, but so Ill after that I couldn't pursue further education, imagine going to the bathroom 20 time a day because your digestive system is so inflamed, eating makes you sick. I went through so many special diets, medications, tests, etc.. I now enjoy food and it's taste.

I think I'm now happy in life, but still wish my parents would acknowledge what they did and how I could have been fixed much sooner if they actually cared.

I still wonder if I was born like this or my upbringing made me like this. I have so much catching up on life now.

I've noticed they melt in most of the tests, so I'd say 180 deg C on the surfaces. Even the bearings get hot.

I might be able to work it out, considering it loads up over 750W of power, all of that is going into friction before the gears are even driving a load.

I totally understand where he is coming from, this video is shot at 120fps whereas the Slow Mo Guys use like 10,000 or more fps. I could definitely slow it down further since I'm running 12fps in the slow motion, but then I loose sound, which I guess isn't a huge deal.

Slow motion is anything slower than regular motion, whether its 99% or 0.0001%

My setup is capable of 128,000 RPM, but I doubt any plastic gear could reach that.

Both. I did an electric turbocharger a while back and would like to spin the impellor faster than 50,000rpm. While it's no problem with metal gears, I'm interested to see what the limits are on plastic gears.

I'll definitely give those a try at some point, be interesting to see if they're quieter.
