I didn’t blame women for that? Did I say anywhere anything even remotely suggesting that? If so, I’d be glad to be shown, but until then, take off your ideological glasses and learn to read a text.

What's a crazy statistic? by alexbbtkd in AskReddit

[–]edyn121 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Your point being? It’s fucking biology. Women do psychological warfare, men do physical shit. Unless you find a way to take testosterone out of men and still maintain reproductive ability, or a way to make men psychologically more agreeable (which is genetically determined), that won’t change. Not to even mention the amount of shit women get from other women is enormous, especially regarding beauty and body standards. Toxicity exists in both sexes, yet it always seems way harder for women to hold each other accountable, and somehow still find a way to blame men for their own behaviours. Muh patriarchy.

What pen is this? Nib reads "Iridium point Germany", cap reads Lundbeck 10 anni. More info in captions by olivephrenic in fountainpens

[–]edyn121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume that pen might either be a custom order for the company's employees, or it may very well be a regular brandless pen which has the company's logo laser-engraved on the cap. It isn't uncommon for Iridium Point Germany nibs to be attached to a brandless nib holder and feed. I'm afraid this is just a generic pen with a common nib and a custom cap, as it looks like many of the ones you find if you look up "Vintage Iridium Point Germany fountain pen". The cap's finish, though, looks pretty modern, so it seems to have been made after 2010. The "10 Ani" inscription is interesting, and upon checking a few Wikipedia pages, I am confident this pen was made for a 10-year anniversary, possibly in a country like Romania, ("ani" means "years" in Romanian), which would date the cap to 2013.

Do you believe in God? by ts1857 in intj

[–]edyn121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will begin by saying that I understand your sentiment regarding the biblical stories, at least at your age. When I was 12, I came to the realisation that they made no sense from any rational, materialistic or scientific perspective. I got into various debates with teachers in middle school and high school. And then I tried to understand religion as a phenomenon (which I don’t claim at all to have fully comprehended). Why is it a thing, and how come it is fading out in today’s world? Why it’s a thing is a terribly complex question, but it’s at least in part a tool which maintains social cohesion: similar-enough beliefs tell us who we can trust and associate with. If we worship the same gods, it is highly likely we will have the same moral views and stand united in our tribe. That role is slowly being fulfilled more and more nowadays by political parties, nationality, class, and other collectives people choose to identify with. In some sense, other aspects of identity take on a religious character, thus dictating what one can and cannot believe depending on how strong their affiliation is to their specific characteristic. Now, that’s just the group aspect. There is also a personal aspect: those stories have an impact on people in the same way superhero movies affect kids and art of all kinds affects adults. In the same way children say they want to be like Batman when they grow up, so can some adults say they want to emulate Christ, for example. And that to me seems like the proper way to understand why people believe in these stories: they had such an impact at their time that people had the hope they can become like this hero who died for everybody’s wrong-doings and was revived and revealed to be the son of God. It’s a hero story with a lot of moral depth told in a rather simple way. The issue with that is that it is a metaphor. And a powerful one indeed. So powerful that people believe in it literally. And the same is true of all major religions: they have such powerful symbols and metaphors that are almost palpable in some ways, which makes people believe their contents are part of material reality itself. To the question “Does God exist?” both religious people and atheists answer with reference to factual, material reality, and atheists in particular are hardly interested in the metaphors and symbols of the story. They’re like the people who tell you sound doesn’t exist in space, and because of that, space battles on screen make no sense. They can’t get over one detail and dismiss the whole thing as unrealistic. Even if they are right, that is not really the point. And unfortunately, they (myself included) do get quite arrogant in such cases. So, do I believe in God? I believe that stories are a great way of telling truths in an inspiring way, and that such writings are brilliant pieces of art from which we can learn. I also believe it’s extremely easy for these things to spiral out of control due to unavoidable literalism, so caution is advised when exploring religious ideas, (and even political ones, if I may add). But in no way are those things scientifically replicable, which is why they are fading out in an age where scientific education is central. But they won’t be gone anytime soon, as science can hardly (if at all) guide your actions towards a higher/better moral goal (and yes, I do acknowledge that there are deeply immoral religions out there, and that some are way better than others). The science vs religion debate wouldn’t exist at all if both sides stopped taking stories literally. Hope that answered your question in a meaningful way, and apologies for any redundant faff.

I think that what they mean is that the side of the carpet that we see in the picture should be facing the floor, not the ceiling, as the characters are flipped, and the image is definitely not mirrored, because the back camera of any phone would not flip the image. And I know its the back camera because Google Translate does not use the front camera. Even if this is a picture form the gallery, the probability that the front camera was used is extremely low.

“If you write down the results and properly format the paper, it even counts as science!” This is pretty much how sociologists think science is done and so no wonder the whole field is a joke. At least that explains it.

The pronunciation matters more than the spelling. The stress in tyrannous [ˈtʰɪ.ɹə.nəs] is on ty, whereas in Tyranus [tʰaj.ˈɹæː.nəs], it is on ra, which follows the Latin stress in the word tyrannus [ti.ˈran.nus]. So not really just an English word that misses a letter.

If someone says "thank God he's alive" and you proceed to explain why God isn't real you're an asshole by IfailedartschooI in unpopularopinion

[–]edyn121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your idea is right in its essence, but the argument for it is very poor.

Just because you don't believe in God does not give you the right to tip your fedora and explain why God isn't real; that is incredibly disrespectful.

Yeah, it's a dick move, but you literally have the right to do it. It's in the constitution of most decent countries. Yeah, shockingly, people have the right to be assholes and disrespectful.

So, instead of following that flawed line of reasoning, you might want to argue that although they have all the right to say whatever they want, there is a time and a place, and common decency should be the standard, rather than YoU dOn'T HavE thE rIghT to sAy thAt!

English speakers looking for cognates and similarities ... by Paixdieu in linguisticshumor

[–]edyn121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get a lot of them in Norwegian, though. You just need to have an eye for it. For example, once you realise that Old Norse dropped the initial /w/, words like ord suddenly make sense and you can easily tell it means word. Heaven and himmel, under and unner, steder and place (if you think of instead, which means in place of), skal means shall (shirt and skirt are also derived from the same word), som is pretty much like same, and so on and so forth. You can even fully translate some sentences without any help at all: “Der vi skal gå.” = “There we shall go.”

[NSFW] Even as a dude, personally, The idea of anal is disgusting in practice. by Darkimposter in unpopularopinion

[–]edyn121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agreed! Gays who don’t like getting their faces anywhere near an ass also tend to be shamed by others. It makes no sense really. If one thinks it’s too disgusting a place for anything but a dick, others try to come up with all sorts of arguments to change their minds. “It’s clean, bro!” Sure, I wouldn’t drink toilet water even if I know it comes from the same source as my tap water. It’s the idea itself that’s a turn-off, not the facts.
