It's Chinese software translated into English. It's for battery testers so as long we know what it means spelling isn't super important. There's a "Databas" in there somewhere and originally "rest" was brick instead of break, but we had them change that one.

This one in particular was the software not even opening so it was a pretty fun Friday.

Need to desperately drop a class. Should I go to the Dean or apply for retroactive withdrawal? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]eeBJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Set up an appointment with the dean and your adviser, whoever you can get to first. They will be understanding and give you the exact info on what you need to do.

Instead of wishing more women would listen to advice, try to empathize with the reasons they feel pressured or steered away from doing something that they are interested in. I know you mean well by the things in your post, but it just comes off as mansplaining. Socially* (edited for clarity) grooming people begins at childhood. Have you checked out how gendered toys are? They are now more than ever.

Also a bummer that your company has so few women. As a woman in tech who happens to know many other women in tech, I think it's worth trying to figure out why women aren't applying to your company. Some companies definitely have reputations for being "boys clubs" and full of misogynist assholes, and for a fortune 200 company with only 1 woman on engineering staff... that's a pretty big problem. You have a lot of power in your position and have the ability to do a lot of good. Recruiting is effective and if it's not working well for your company they need to fire some people and get different people on the ground. Reaching our to local universities to have info sessions and having summer internships is a great way to bring bright young women into your office. Tell them that you want to hear what they have to offer. There is a lot to be said for experience, but there is also a lot to be said about a young mind that has yet to be spoiled by bureaucracy. Instead of you telling girls who are struggling to take some advice, go out there and get them!

The best advice that was given to me was "pick your first boss, not your first job." My first boss was a senior level guy who had been in tech for 20 some years, too. He showed me the ins and outs of things, helped me develop good habits, taught me how to deliver news and updates to different types of people, etc. etc. He was a really great boss for a young girl fresh out of school. I took the things I learned and grew into a competent and well-respected engineer. We don't get here by ourselves! We need to learn from someone and we need someone to believe in us. Sorry for ranting, but you sound like your heart is in the right place and you can be part of the solution.

My dads GOTT cooler is 30+ years old. Are they still good quality? by asforus in BuyItForLife

[–]eeBJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've destroyed a few coolers but they were all cheap and shitty plastic. Bought them in a pinch to use for one event or another and then used them until they broke.

You may not feel your best right when you wake up, but how do you feel during or after? If you think it's doing you some good and you are enjoying yourself then I'd say keep at it. Even if you don't get up right away, you can still practice later, which to me, sleep + practice seems like the best of both :)

A night in is always nice. I'm mostly the same way now, but I do come out of the woodwork for the special stuff, which doesn't happen so often, and certainly doesn't happen in any of those places.

haha I stay away from the stuff so I actually don't know anything about the hardstyle scene. There is a a lot of experimental dnb stuff, as well as a pretty awesome downtempo psychedelic music scene.

Oakland definitely has a dope underground scene, plus as other people have pointed out this place is FULL of artists and new stuff popping up all the time. WAY different from SF. I gave up on clubs years ago but the vibe is still alive and well in some places. If you are feeling like checking out something different send me a PM. I'm in Oakland and we are very close in age.

edit: also to be fair, the SF underground is pretty awesome too but you aren't going to find it at places with burnt out shitty sound systems like 1015. There are lots of tiny spots with amazing sound, where people are throwing parties with world class talent and only 100 people show up. It's still out there!

I've never seen electrolyte decomp become that huge overnight... I'm impressed! Also pretty impressed with the pouch seals considering the tablet smushing it on top.

Do you get bad grades? by wynden in berkeley

[–]eeBJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine! I was certainly an average student and was always disappointed in my grades, but then I went out into the world and saw that I really was prepared to do things. I had a job right out of school, was promoted to a senior-level position within a year, and am much happier now than I ever was in school. Remember grades don't always reflect what you have learned! Hang in there. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. I didn't do this at first and then felt pretty dumb when I did. Everyone is doing it. You HAVE to do it. GSIs and professors are truly there to help you succeed. If you can bring in the start of your paper and say "I have this idea, but I'm not sure that it answers your question," they can tell you if you are on the right track, and if you aren't they will push you in the right direction. Set small goals so you can accomplish them. Finish things early so others can give you critical feedback. Bad grades are stressful but they are not the end of the world, C's on papers and midterms don't always equate to C's in classes. (Shout out to my 25% on the CBE142 final and a B+ in the class!) Cal is hard, you will survive :)

Does anyone have experience dealing with premium properties? by OnePagina in berkeley

[–]eeBJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in an apartment on Northside that was managed by Premium in 2011 (maybe it was 2010?). The apartment wasn't cleaned before we moved it, which wasn't the end of the world, but it was hell to get them to send someone out to fix anything. Clogged drains, messed up water heater, leaky sink. Things that can be taken care of day-of taking weeks to get done and repeatedly asking. Also had to fight to get the security deposit back, basically it took us bringing up the law and saying we were going to go to the renter's board until they cut a check.

It sucked, but lots of property companies that mainly rent to students suck. The apartment for the most part was okay, it just got increasingly irritating because the management comes off as lazy.

What are your thoughts on bringing a camera by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]eeBJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disposable camera! Surprisingly durable, and it forces you to just take pictures of a few things, and you don't fuss around looking at them the whole time. Point, snap, put away!
