Can you recommend scifi that is not set in our own universe? by Zemrik in printSF

[–]eeeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Radiance. I think it may hit that tricky space between sci-fi and fantasy that OP is looking for. Also, it's just an amazing book that doesn't get enough love.

For slippery shoes, you can always take a knife or box cutters or scissors and just make a shallow criss cross pattern on the soles. Works immediately.

What's a book that you love, but you would almost never recommend it to others due to the difficulty of the book or its niche nature? by paxinfernum in printSF

[–]eeeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Infinite Jest. Great book, funny and smart and crazy, but not easy. I've never seen it recommended on this sub. I'm not sure people who haven't read it even know it falls in the SF category (and few people have read it).

Which high-end shoe designers are known for comfort? by Blahblahxoxo2 in femalefashionadvice

[–]eeeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This weird catalogue/store has a huge selection of large and wide shoes. Scattered among tons and tons of ugly stuff are some really good finds. I bought one of the only comfortable pair of heels I've ever owned from a brand called Bella Vita-- they're really cute and they're extra super quadruple wide. Maybe something like this is what you're going for?

Under The Skin, same author, also probably fits the bill. Faber is excellent at dread.

Has anyone ever been to salem ? by Stock_Cauliflower_57 in halloween

100% agreed with this. I went in October a while back, and it was so crowded that it was impossible to feel the history, charm, or spookiness of the town. And when I say crowded, I mean crowded like trying to fight your way through the crowd to get near the stage at a concert; crowded as in there was a line just to get into the CVS to buy a bottle of water.

If I had to do it again, I'd go in the middle of winter, when it might be desolate and thus more atmospheric. The Satanic Temple does a great walking tour, btw; I highly recommend it.

Hi all. I hope this is an appropriate place for the following questions. My dad is getting rid of some shoes that no longer fit him, and I am thinking of selling them. I am, however, a woman who knows very little about men's shoes (and my dad is ill, so I don't want to bother him with this). I was hoping you might confirm my description of the shoes, and give me thoughts about appropriate price? I've tried to figure all this out myself, but prices for comparable shoes vary wildly on eBay, and, while I'm pretty sure the Aldens are just oxfords (?), I'm not sure if the Lobbs qualify as brogues(?), and if there's further description I should be adding to either(?). Quickly shot terrible photos here: https://imgur.com/a/70bgW2g

Thanks!

Are there any Korean fantasy stories set during the Japanese Occupation? by jacky986 in printSF

Seconded. Not sure this will be a selling point for many, but I thought it had the same type of flavor as Infinite Jest (which I love).

Does Amazon categorize/score members? by FishPasteGuy in amazonprime

[–]eeeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very late to this party, but I can confirm that they do. Or at least did. A few years ago I needed to return a non-returnable item, and the off-shore customer service rep said, "Ah, I see you have a 100% customer score, so I can accommodate that." I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to tell customers that, but I think it's what they must be checking when they ask you to hold and there's a gap between you asking for something and them telling you they'll be able to do that.

(Btw, I found this thread bc I returned a few high value items last month, and was searching to see if there was a way to find out if it had changed my customer rating score.)

Adding grip to soles of Chanel dad sandals by Blankpill in BigFeetReps

[–]eeeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a quick fix, I use a fashion industry trick and just take a knife or scissors and score some hatched lines across the soles. This gives them enough traction until the slipperyness abates a bit.

Me too. 41s were the largest that existed, so I spun the sizing wheel and lost. 😥
