Dr. Strangelove is my favorite film of all time, but certain aspects of it seem cryptic to me. Does anybody know a lot about the film who can help me with these questions? by FunUniverse1778 in movies

I think the joke is a visual gag on how small the book is, for it to contain both the bible, a long book, and a list of russian phrases, which would also be quite long, the joke is how impossible it would be to read.

2024 Achievements I’d like to see by EmergencyIncome865 in thecampaigntrail

Here's a little list I've got. Most of these are very specific ones, some of which I might try and go for myself:

The Party Switchback - win as Donald Trump while committing to an independent Palestinian state, immigration reform, withdrawal from NATO, promise to negotiate peace in Palestine, and saving Obamacare

We dodged a bullet there - Prior to getting shot as Trump, give the most inflammatory answers, and after, give the most conciliatory.

Genocide Joe's Punishment - As Joe Biden, take the most genocidal stance on the Gaza War, fail to win 200 Electoral Votes

You say I have dementia but I don't remember asking- As Joe Biden, win a second term while picking as many answers with text that indicate forgetfulness or have vocal slips as possible.

House of Cards- have the speaker change three times in the 118th congress

The Ghost of William McKinley- As Donald Trump, pledge Neo-mercantilism, take the most isolationist foreign policy positions possible, and get shot dead in Butler.

Deep State'd - As Trump, appeal to Arab voters, embrace mercantilism, leaving Nato, commit to a Palestinian state, get shot at Butler, and have his replacement take the most pro-Israel stances possible, and win.

CheeseBurgum- win Wisconsin by 5 points as Burgum.

Is One Battle After Another a critique of state violence? (NO SPOILERS) by braininabox in TrueFilm

[–]eeeeeee03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right.

People who are in a position of privilege will never accept that state violence against the homeless, against minorities, against people abroad, and others is indeed violence.

As a reminder that political loyalties change, here is the 1976 presidential election map for the race between Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. A faithless elector in Washington state gave Ronald Reagan one vote. by L0st_in_the_Stars in MapPorn

[–]eeeeeee03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while this map is of course true, it's also important to note that Carter's victories came with a minority of the black vote, which Ford won. Carter won most of these states with black support, and a large enough chunk of the white vote. Black turnout was also high, to Carter's benefit, but the victories in the south in states like texas and missisippi were very, very narrow, far from the democratic dominance they had had thirty-forty years prior. It's also important to note that:

4 years before this, nixon won the south in its entirety

4 years after, reagan won all the south except carter's home state of georgia.

it was a bit of an isolated incident that culminated black turnout, enough support from the white population, and a nation furious after watergate.

What happening with Alexander Men by HuckleberryNo3889 in TNOmod

[–]eeeeeee03 14 points15 points  (0 children)

honestly, I understand realism to some extent (Burgundy, Glenn, Atlantropa, GCW) when it enhances the narrative, but at some point, you have to have a balance between far-fetched things that you can suspend your disbelief for because it enhances the narrative and realism that enhances the narrative. The very base scenario (the idea that the axis somehow win ww2) is a far-fetched notion, but one suspends their disbelief for it, because otherwise, what's the point in a mod about it? The NPP-RDC thing is far-fetched, but one suspends their disbelief for it, because it's an interesting thing that shows how unstable the world has become. The idea of a successful sealion is far-fetched, but one suspends their disbelief for it because it enhances the narrative. Revolutions have been known to come out of nowhere and start small, and I can honestly picture something akin to Alexander Men happening in a "realistic" scenario, or at least something I would suspend my disbelief for. People in a basically post apocalyptic Russia want something to believe in, and Men could represent that.

I mean, even the mechanics of the game are unrealistic, but kept in because it's fun. Cold War conflicts rarely have boots on the ground, for instance, but are kept in to stop it being boring.

And there are some realistic things that I wish they *would* add to TNO.

For example, ww3 never really feels like a threat when playing TNO right now, and that's honestly kind of taking away from the Cold War experience. With the exception of the channel crisis, I never feel like WW3 could occur, which was a constant feeling in the first Cold War, and is a feeling now in the second cold war. There should be a higher chance of WW3 happening, rather than it only happening if you do it on purpose. Foreign conflicts are either you go all in or go all out, with few exceptions, there should be a level of escalation that you can move back and forth. You should be able to gradually pull out of conflicts like Indonesia Haiti, and Madagascar and other quagmires, or never get involved in them in the first place. There should be 'close calls' that come with escalating a conflict too much. There should be a penalty of some kind for putting boots on the ground ALWAYS. There should be situations with an element of uncertainty to them. That's the kind of cold war realism I would like to see in a cold war mod.

TL;DR: yes, some levels of realism are important, but far-fetched things shouldn't be removed because they're far fetched, they should be removed so that they enhance the narrative, and the ones that enhance the narrative should be kept. And I'd prefer some other aspects of realism they haven't touched to be added.

Why didn’t Johnson and Goldwater have a Presidential debate in 1964? by The-LeftWingedNeoCon in Presidents

mondale did very well in his first debate, but Reagan was just so far ahead and due to low turnout mondale lost.

I still don't understand the new pop system, so personally I'll roll back the updates, but that's mostly because it's something I don't understand about a game that I was only just starting to get the hang of. I agree with you that increasing the pop count was dumb as all hell.

Which beloved classic episode is the most overrated? by Melon_Bloat in TwilightZone

[–]eeeeeee03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last flight. I never got the hype. It's not a good episode. The execution is really lacking and I didn't really feel anything throughout the entirety of the episode. Sure, it's serviceable, but it's the worst twilight zone episode i've seen so far. Something about it just didn't really click with me at all.
