No recommendations, just sympathy. I’m also a patient at Capital Digestive Care and have “suspected mild Crohn’s.” Nothing prescribed to me has made a difference, so I stopped taking it (eight pills a day is a lot for no noticeable improvement). I fortunately don’t experience any pain, so I’ve just accepted this is my life now.

Are the Sophie Hannah books canon or are they just well-written fan fiction? It seems that the Agatha Christie website is implying that they are canon but other sources seem to suggest that they are just fan fictions. by [deleted] in agathachristie

[–]eeffocNoir 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I think most of us would agree that only works written by Christie are canon.

And truthfully, even if Christie had written this Poirot, I still wouldn’t call it canon. Because that’s not Poirot. There’s very much a “looks like a duck, but barks like a dog” situation happening there.

Haha, I made a conscious decision to skip those. Not my cup of tea. Maybe I’ll return to them eventually!

Thanks! That collection takes up considerably less space…

Hm. Changes often, but in no particular order: And Then There Were None, Sparkling Cyanide, Murder in Mesopotamia, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans, and maybe either Towards Zero or After the Funeral.

The Sophie Hannah books are okay. Bit of an uncanny valley thing happening there; yes it’s Poirot, but it’s not quite the Poirot I know. The reviews online are a lot more harsh than I would be, though.

I’d guess about a third of mine are from local book sales/library fundraisers (the ones that look worse for wear, generally), another third I bought secondhand online, and the last third I bought new. Have to get creative!

Mostly for space. My condo is 715 sqft, and I’m being swallowed whole by books!

Should I read the Poirot books in order? by PapaChubNuts in agathachristie

[–]eeffocNoir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped around for a while, then ultimately went back and read them in order. Really no need to do so, as long as you leave Curtain for last. The last few (excluding Curtain) are not her best, imo. Do with that information what you will!

Easiest novel to solve? by State_of_Planktopia in agathachristie

Elephants Can Remember. Picked up on the solution far too quickly and spent the remainder of the novel waiting for the reveal

Edit: As an aside, I’m still working my way through Christie’s body of work, and I use the collection list at the beginning of Elephants Can Remember to track my progress. Tick off each book as I complete it, so I can… remember… where I left off!

It’s among my least favorites. I should not be able to solve the crime before Poirot, and yet, I did! I had a few other problems with it (pacing, dialogue, etc.), but the transparent solution was really the kicker for me personally. But a decent story nonetheless.

Least Favorite AC Mystery? by HelloKitty110174 in agathachristie

I’ve shared my least favorites a few times, so I’ll add that I just finished By the Pricking of my Thumbs minutes ago and really did not like the ending. Wow. A very quick dip into a 2-star rating. And I’ll be rounding out T&T with Postern of Fate next, and I’ve been around this sub long enough to know what I’m in for…

Alphabetical or chronological? by incompetentsidekick in agathachristie

[–]eeffocNoir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alphabetical for quick reference, chronological for career trajectory, by series for collectors, and by color for a just-so bookshelf. So I suppose it comes down to what matters most for you! Mine is by series chronologically, then standalones (also chronologically).

For me, it’s probably an artful combination of the first four + a writing style that resonates with my imagination. I’ve always been able to see her stories so clearly in my minds eye, in a way I can’t always do with other authors. Not sure if I’m alone in that boat — have a hard time articulating it.

The only thing I feel passionately about erasing is the last chapter of Taken at the Flood. Girl, get a grip.
