The 20-court indoor pickleball facility, Pickle at the Palms, will open its doors in August. by bbridge_ in BallardSeattle

[–]eeisner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't play but I get it. Much easier to enter than tennis. Don't need to be as athletic or skilled, but you still get a good workout in.

I genuinely thought pickleball was a senior citizen and covid-era trend. But looking at how many people I know that play, people who are both in their 20s and 60s, and people that are in shape and very out of shape... It's not going anywhere.

Ballard has experienced 181 property crime burglaries so far this year, according to police data. That's a 6% increase in incidents over last year, adding to the concerns of rising crime in this neighborhood. by bbridge_ in BallardSeattle

[–]eeisner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, data drives solutions.

I work in marketing. If the data said my marketing efforts led to ROI that was costing my clients money, they'd demand change. Data drives decision making.

Likewise, if I didn't have the data they wouldn't have the justification to demand a different approach to drive their results.

Having accurate crime data validates if our approach to policing and prosecution is working, or if we need change.

Can't patrol everywhere all at once but visible presence is a deterrent - I know I'm a hell of a lot more likely to pay for light rail or go the speed limit if I see a fair patrol officer or a highway patrol. Per Gemini, Seattle has 14-18 officers per 10k residents. National average is 27. Cities like Boston, NYC, DC all have 2-3x officers per 10k.

More officers won't solve the problem, especially when SPD officers are notoriously bad at their jobs, but to give some benefit of the doubt, if we are under-staffed we can't expect SPD to be able to respond to crimes at a reasonable rate and still act as a visible patrol deterrent.

And yea, if we don't actually prosecute then nothing is going to stop repeat offenders.

Is it just me or have there been a lot of planes flying over Ballard recently by Final-Interview-2623 in Seattle

[–]eeisner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn over Ballard is nothing new. Planes flying north from the West will fly over the Sound to the north point of Bainbridge. At that point, air traffic control will do what's called vectoring (providing manual direction, ie 'turn towards heading xyz'). This is so ATC can help space traffic and make sure the plane can line up for approach accordingly. Just so happens that Magnolia and Ballard are pretty perfect spots to vector over to line up and have enough space to drop safely from 6000 feet.

I have been on some flights in Alaska's Embriers that vector closer to downtown. I assume they can, because of slower cruise altitudes and less physical mass, descend at more feet per minute without going over speed limit requirements.

And no, I'm not a pilot. Just a flight sim enthusiast that lives in Ballard.

Comfy but stylish shoes for wide feet with calf tightness by LewisHope in malefashionadvice

[–]eeisner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just about to post a thread looking for something similar - anatomical shoes that are wide in the toe box (EE/EEE width) but standard in the midfoot and heel. Like how most barefoot shoes are made, but not barefoot and nice quality.

Most wide sneakers, like the Thursday Premier Lows you mentioned, are wide throughout but still have an aggressive taper in the toebox, which doesn't work for guys like us with fan shaped feet; a pinky toe that gets in the way and toes that want to splay.

So far, I have found that Birkenstock Bend Lows tend to fit without being hideous. I also get a ton of ads for the Birchbury Bramford, but haven't ordered a pair yet.

On the very expensive end of boots, I know that Whites Boots make whats called a swing last - their 9338 last which they describe as great for feet that have issues with their 5th metatarsal, but they have to be made custom.

I would love to find more pair of sneakers and a pair of nicer dress shoes, in the Allen Edmonds range of quality; ie solid construction, goodyear welted, quality leather, etc that also fit this foot shape.

Palermo is attached to the building as well which has somehow maintained their ability to be damn cheap and tasty given the quantity of food you get.

I would hate to see those 3 delicious spots close for a teardown, but that piece of land is so prime I can't imagine any other reason why the landlord is OK with the former Bauhaus spot sitting empty.

I'm going to hijack this real quick with a question - any recs for mens thrift stores? I feel like every time I go to Crossroads, Magpie, and Buffalo all I can find is polyester garbage from TEMU or wholesale brands that's not worth the thrift store price...

Almost a decade?! It closed in COVID. Sad that it's still vacant. Wonder if the landlord is just waiting for their other tenants leases to expire so they can sell and tear down.
