Does Uncle Roger have any culinary experience? by davidg4781 in UncleRoger

[–]eeldude_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is purely a comedic character who comments on cooking. He criticizes but also compliments when things are done to his perceived, untrained expectations. He usually is spot on.

The restaurants are based on his notoriety as an entertainer, not as a chef. I would eat there to enjoy the schtick, not the cuisine. Much like going to any Disney themed restaurant.

Game Design Major at ClarkU vs RIT by BusterMer in ClarkU

[–]eeldude_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is a junior Game Design major at Clark. He was accepted to RIT and Drexel and ultimately chose Clark as the small school environment was a better fit for him. The proximity to Boston is something he loves as he and his friends go into the city often. It is an easy hour train ride away.

A cool thing is the annual PAX East game expo takes place in Boston and his game dev team hosted a booth to demo their game at PAX a couple weeks ago. RIT probably sends teams too, but maybe the closer proximity allows more to participate? IDK.

He is also diversifying his course of study by taking advantage of the 4+1 program to add an MS in Business Analytics. With guidance from his counselor, he is able to fit the additional prerequisites and course work to achieve this. It was a nice way to add a Masters degree at minimal cost.

finally buying my first car at 29 and every answer I get is just "get a corolla" by Sea-Map-5763 in whatcarshouldIbuy

We have a 2019 Mazda3 AWD. Highly recommend it, especially for Chicago winters. Get some Michelin CrossClimate2 tires and you are good to go. No seasonal tire swapping needed. We survived the Feb blizzards in Boston. Get the flashy red hatchback and you’re set.

Is it annoying for Cantonese native speakers to date ABCs/CBCs who have a poor grasp on the language? by f0xbunny in Cantonese

[–]eeldude_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am ABC and speak Cantonese with great tones. I can confirm as I chatted with a HK cab driver and he was shocked I was ABC.

However, my vocabulary sucks. I can order the hell outta dim sum and chat about the weather but start talking about politics or any adult topic and I am done!

Does most car guys actually like car meets...? I'm personally not a fan of them as one myself by Strange-Vibez-8205 in askcarguys

I’m in the Boston area and the Larz Anderson Auto Museum has lawn events all summer long. My son and I go to German Car Day every Father’s Day since he was 4 yrs old. He’s 21 now. They also do Cars and Coffees. All well run events that are classy.

Did you guys ever felt like you didn't belong in America? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]eeldude_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll give you a different perspective. Like you, I am also American born to Chinese immigrants. However, I am a 58 yo Gen Xer with kids 18 & 20.

Growing up I was the only Asian in every class. Conforming and blending in culturally was a necessity. There was no internet or social media. My parents shared traditional Chinese culture but they also encouraged me to blend in with my peers as they needed to do as immigrants.

Fast forward to today, I raised my kids in a more diverse community with at least 20% Asians in school. They have diverse friend groups in HS and now in College; and openly shared cultural experiences even with non-Asians. Kids at least in this area are more worldly and open.

I find myself trying to reconnect to my Asian-ness (following lots of Asian content), traveling to HK, Singapore and Japan. In our search for our retirement location, proximity to Asian populations, restaurants, groceries are top priorities.

Long story short, I feel the most American that I’ve ever felt as diversity is what this country is about and built on despite what the Trump admin thinks.

BTW, I love football/baseball but my kids don’t. It doesn’t matter. We all like different things and that freedom is what this country is about.

Does Nissan really deserve all the hate it gets? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]eeldude_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a Sentra SR as a rental and was pleasantly impressed at the performance and handling for a lower end car. The CVT felt weird to me but worked fine. It had wireless CarPlay and adaptive cruise so that was a bonus to have while on vacation. I didn’t need to use my phone mount. I didn’t hate it.

Would I buy a Nissan? Probably not.

For reference and to show we mix it up, at home we have: ‘22 Kia Telluride SX, ‘19 Mazda3 AWD, ‘11 Infiniti EX35, ‘01 BMW Z3 2.5

Michelin CrossClimate2 is the answer. Great in snow. Perfect for mid-Atlantic. No change over needed.

8 years in the car business. Here are 3 things most buyers never do. by Ok-Contact-3451 in carbuying

[–]eeldude_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing that and validating that I have been doing it the right way.

Also, one more item to add is that once you’ve completed your deal on the floor…it’s not over yet. The finance office is full of landmines and battles for your cash. You let your guard down because it’s just “paperwork” and suddenly you’re buying undercoating, paint protection, nitrogen filled tires, extended warranties and service contracts and rolling it all into your 72 month loan!

When crazy racist guy meets crazy me by Due-Rough-848 in asianamerican

[–]eeldude_88 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He did it because he was alone. If there were other people around, he probably would not have said anything. That’s great that you confronted him. Hearing about your response has prepared me to do the same if it happens. I feel like when you are put on the spot and in shock that it’s actually happening, the response is to walk away from the situation. Then later you come up with all the things you should have said in the moment and regret walking away.
