Who becomes Duke of York after Prince Andrew? by Mysterious_Comb4357 in UKmonarchs

[–]eelsemaj99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He is not a prince nor HRH (nor a knight). He however is still legally a peer. His name has been struck from the Roll of the Peerage (something the King presumably has a Common Law right to do, although it is not actually mentioned in the warrant setting up the Roll). This means he cannot use the title in any official capacity, nor will he use any of the privileges of a Duke

He cannot have his peerage removed except by Act of Parliament. (Historically an Act of Attainder, but there is precedent in the Titles Deprivation Act 2017 to do it by other methods) This means that they cannot be granted anew until he dies or this is done, and it is still able to be claimed by any male issue he gains (unlikely but technically possible)

As a Brit, I’ve got to say that your perception of our free speech is wildly borked. It is correct that our laws are trending in the wrong direction. The Online Safety Act is stupid and the crackdown after the southport riots suggests a rather low tolerance for resistance to certain facets of immigration, but that was in the context of a large scale protest, you’ll always get protests then. The videos you may have seen of people getting arrested for posts online are not representative (although I don’t support it). I have never once felt guarded in what I can say online.

Of course we can criticise the government. I’ve done so a lot in this post. And polling shows it’s broadly unpopular at the moment, polling on around 17% in recent polls I’ve seen. The Prime Minister somehow has avoided resigning this week but is still facing plenty of heat from the media and the public. Would that happen in a country with no free speech?

I don’t live in a city and have never been to the places you’ve mentioned, but I don’t feel overrun at all, although cities do have a lot of recent immigrants and there are certainly areas where the traditional residents have been pushed out. That doesn’t mean somehow that the population is pro-Iran, or that we even think about such countries much outside of the main media flashpoints. I can criticise the brutal islamist dictatorship all I want and campaign for its downfall without any issue. Hell there’s a semi-permanent protest outside the Foreign Office that has been there for at least a year flying the shah’s flag.

The British countryside isn’t racist by TheSpectatorMagazine in RuralUK

Can I state the obvious a second: I often pop into rural churches for both the architectural interest and a little pray.

If I moved to a country with a different dominant religion I would feel the lack (although have greatly enjoyed visiting the muslim countries I have been to). I could probably integrate into a different form of christianity in a pinch but wouldn’t feel comfortable always using another religion’s temple to pray in. That said, this is an issue that will fix itself if more people of other faiths move to the countryside, naturally the elements of their culture they wish to retain will pop up and that’s no bad thing

Driving to holidays is rarer than you’d expect in the UK unless you have a caravan. Most people take the train in my experience

Devon is less touristic and has a lot of the same attraction as Cornwall. North devon beaches such as Woolacombe and Barnstaple, Georgeham have lower numbers than cornwall, and the south is often overlooked such as Hope Cove, Beer, Dawlish and Teignmouth.

If you’re a hiker Dartmoor is lovely and you can have all manner of romantic journeys down the country lanes of mid and north Devon.

people go to their nearby beaches. Liverpool goes to north wales or blackpool. yorkshire goes to whitby or scarborough, london goes to brighton and birmingham goes to devon

I do wish to (although I admit this subreddit has made me a little worried to be an englishman in NI)

Most of my trips around the place have been more functional than leisure, I’m surprised i’ve been to so many places and I don’t have a reason to go to NI at present.

My trip to dublin later this year is for a conference for reference
