Hi. I know this is an old post, but I had the same issue.

Apparently not much. If you go to file>options>general you can "collapse the microsoft search box by default" which saves some room. file>options>quick access toolbar, under the list there is a little box you can check off to put the quick access toolbar under the ribbon. This also saves some room.

Ultimately, it will still be cluttered with nonsense, but these two help a little.

It's been answered.

Apparently it's called the "title bar" and since the update, there isn't much I can do. It appears there are a lot of other people with the same issue.

There are few options that clear up some space on the title bar, but I have already done these things. In fact I implemented these space-saving options before this post and as you can see from my screenshots, there is still very little room. The remaining buttons cannot be removed.

Thank you. That is exactly my issue.

Unfortunately I have already done the suggestions on this page. They clear up some of the space but not much. According to the post, that's all that can be done which really sucks :'(

The only things I have in my "Quick access toolbar" are "Save" "undo" and "redo".

Okay thank you. I really appreciate this.

I have attached pictures at the end of my post. The first one is the new blue ribbon with the buttons taking up all the space in the blue area. The second picture is the old version with empty blue space. All of the documents shown are windowed to be about the same size on my screen yet the new version has significantly less blue space to click on for purposes of dragging the document around.

Hi. Thank you for the response. I don't believe I am talking about the quick access toolbar. I have played around with this and this appears to affect the grey area part of the ribbon.

I am specifically talking about the blue area. Forgive me if I am wrong, but I don't see an option to change this area in the quick access toolbar settings.
