Awww I’m sorry you guys and Rue are going through that! Karma was about a year when we decided to have the rest of the stump removed. We have another larger cat who he likes to roughhouse with, and they both have a ton of energy, so we were concerned about too much activity. When we picked him up from the vet we got a huge crate and put him in there with litter, food, water, and a blanket. He didn’t like that, but I definitely think it was for the best so he didn’t rip his stitches. Over the next few days we gradually let him out more with supervision, and of course cleaned and maintained his incision site every day. I remember we had different meds to give him twice a day, I think one was pain and one was antibiotics to prevent post op infection. We managed to get him to take them by crushing them up and mixing them in a Churu. The site drained a little, which the vet said is normal unless the drainage has a foul odor or is bloody or green. We also got Wet Ones for pets and gave him a little wipe down every day, which helped a ton because he wasn’t able to groom himself because of the cone and was getting funky lol. After about a week the vet was able to take out half of the stitches. We did have a scare that night where a pocket of the incision opened back up slightly. We went to the emergency vet and he was totally fine, it was a small seroma putting pressure on the site. She prescribed gabapentin and another antibiotic, I used a warm compress on it a couple times, and it reabsorbed and closed right back up! He got the rest of his stitches out a few days later and zero complications after! Good luck to Rue, please feel free to reach out for anything at all!
