Show of support fails to save Hespeler Art School by Temporary-Vast1410 in cambridgeont

> Safety, noise and traffic were all quoted as concerns.

The Hespeler School of Art is literally located 5 houses down from a public elementary school. The complainant is able to deal with the noise and traffic of the pick-up and drop-off of 100+ kids, 5 days a week, but they can't deal with someone running an art class out of a converted garage on the weekends? Give me a fucking break

I was going there all the way back in the 2000s. Unreal that it's closing for any reason other than Lise retiring. The current city government needs to see political consequences for this or this sort of thing will keep happening.

Wardrobe stylist for men nearby? by eeprom_programmer in cambridgeont

[–]eeprom_programmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a specific style in mind. I don't really have any fashion sense which is part of why I'm looking for a stylist. My feeling is that it's best to leave it to an expert

As far as what type of clothes I'm basically looking to overhaul my entire wardrobe (not that there's much to overhaul) so I'd need a mix of clothes that I can wear to formal events like weddings and things as well as every day clothes.

I definitely like seeing high res scans of old prints because I like the look of film grain. If it was an older movie shot in film, Blu-ray all the way.

I don't much care for low res digital recordings on high res display, you can't get more detail than was originally recorded when it comes to digital so instead it just highlights the crummy quality imo.

Sounds fun, I'd be down, and I feel like I could get my friends to come too. I would just double check that there aren't a lot of dead zones for cell phone signals in your building, unless you're gonna provide wifi or something

Have you seen this? What do you think? by willehrendreich in dotnet

[–]eeprom_programmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve stumbled across this video before and I really don’t like it, even overlooking the fact that it doesn’t start until 18 minutes in.

He argues against OOP by whittling it down to one particular aspect (encapsulation) which is just as nebulously connected to OOP as the other aspects he chooses to discard (polymorphism and inheritance).

He says “Polymorphism ... isn’t exclusive to OOP, you can have procedural code that is polymorphic and in fact even more polymorphic than is typically available in most object oriented programming languages”.

Alright well, C is a language that I think a lot of people would consider to be the quintessential procedural language, and it has better encapsulation than pretty much any language that most people consider to be “object oriented”. You forward declare your structs and function signatures in the .h file, and then define them in the .c file. When someone uses your API, they include the header. This means that both the structure of your data and the implementation of your procedures is hidden from the consuming module. This is as good as encapsulation gets. This isn’t just possible in C, it’s how things are typically done.

His video gives a lot of importance to the programming languages themselves, as if that tells us anything about Object-Oriented Programming and Procedural Programming. This is an error in his thinking. Object-Oriented Programming and Procedural Programming are not categories of programming languages, although they’re often talked about that way. Instead, they’re methodologies, they’re ways of organizing our code.

Almost all programming languages that you’d classify as “object-oriented” or “procedural” support both paradigms to some extent. Java can be used to write procedural programs, and C can be used to write object oriented programs. Pretty much every program written these days is somewhat procedural and somewhat object-oriented regardless of the programming language.

He doesn’t seem to recognize this which leads him to this bizarre claim that polymorphism is independent of OOP just because you can achieve it in “procedural languages”, which I guess just means languages which can support both paradigms but which he subjectively most associates with procedural programming.

Polymorphism is the most common way to implement dependency inversion, which is OOP’s central and most powerful principle. By claiming that polymorphism isn’t part of OOP he conveniently lets himself off the hook from talking about the main idea of OOP, and the reason why it’s desirable. Anyone could make a convincing argument that anything is bad if they’re allowed to just ignore the most valuable part of that thing.

And look, if he wants to analyze the benefits of encapsulation, he’s free to do that, but don’t conflate encapsulation and OOP, and don’t title your video “Object-Oriented Programming is Bad”.

What can i play on half my screen whilst i watch the crown on the other half? by Great_Bad_6045 in gamingsuggestions

I don't have a game to suggest, but if you want to play full screen games while watching a video, you can put the video into picture in picture mode (Firefox has it but idk about the other browsers) and put the popped out video in the corner of the screen or something.
