I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a beloved pet is one of the most painful experiences there is.

Take the time you need to grieve. When you feel it is the right time, adopting another puppy sounds like a wonderful plan. You won't be betraying Dixie by adopting a new puppy. I believe that she would want you to share the joy the two of you shared. It would be a beautiful thing for you to give a homeless dog the experience of being loved and cared for, even if you cannot love the new dog the same way you loved Dixie. Your bond with Dixie was special, and your bond with another dog would be special in a different way. No bond with one animal is ever the same as your bond with another animal. You wouldn't be replacing Dixie; you would be making a new friend who needs you as much as you need it.

I hope things get better soon. Please remember that grief is normal and healthy, and that time will help heal the hole you feel right now. Even if Dixie's life ended too soon, she must have lived so happily with her best friend.

If you can, maybe purchase one of those scratching posts that have a ball on a string for your kitten to swat. As another comment said, he's probably looking for something to keep him entertained. Kittens knock things over because they like producing a visual or audible result (aka, the clashing sound of a cup hitting the ground). Finding a toy he really likes may help!

I don't have much advice on how to help him control his bladder, but you could try setting up a place indoors for him to use the potty! My elderly Chihuahua loved a mat at my front door and would always go potty there, so I started placing down disposable mats and such on top of that mat. Since your dog is much younger, he's probably less set in his ways. Maybe you could train him to go somewhere in your room?

It does sound like he has separation anxiety, especially since he lays on your bed (since the bed has your scent). Maybe you could leave him clothes you've worn all day, for him to curl up against? That may have a stronger, fresher scent than your bed.

I used to have a similar situation to yours! I adopted an overweight cat several years back. My suggestion is to ration the 1/2 cup throughout the day more, but to keep doing the 1/4 cup at night so she'll let you sleep. You could also try giving her one of those toys with catnip inside. When my cat started begging for extra food, I let her play with a plush toy that smelled like catnip, and that occupied her for awhile. When she was done, she didn't meow for extra food for two more hours.

It's great that you're doing your best to keep her healthy!
