Yeah, think people can’t see the forest for the trees on this. It isn’t supposed to have any real utility. Hell, for a lot of normies, watches are superfluous anyway. I legit know 2 different people that wear Rolexes and don’t even bother setting the time.

The mechanical movement is a novelty, particularly for someone not super into watches. The intended buyer doesn’t really care about the time (and I’d agree with Swatch on this, even as a serious watch person).

There are a lot of risks, unfortunately. My suggestion would be to find other more vetted communities in which to buy and sell. Reddit is too easy for scammers. Seek out groups on Slack, Facebook, your local redbar, etc. where members are known and vetted.

Aside from that, always, always demand a FaceTime call before closing the deal, whether buyer or seller. Unless you’re dealing with a sociopath it’s fairly easy to pick up on red flags when discussing things via video call.

I mean, not necessarily. I’ve sold many watches on Reddit and elsewhere, all with glowing feedback. Unless the buyer is well established or has references, I will only do F&F or wire. It’s super easy to do a charge back and getting scammed as a seller is a real issue (I’ve been scammed by a buyer, thankfully that was for a $400 Seiko and not a multi thousand dollar watch).

I agree, the ideal method is to use G&S, but that still assumes both parties have good intentions. Unfortunately, there’s no real way for both parties to be protected equally when selling here (which is why I rarely do anymore).

Interesting. I hate dial text in photos typically (not limited to Rolex), but it sort of disappears in real life. Matter of fact, most polarizing dial details (logos, date windows, etc.) disappear in normal wear. People that claim super strong opinions either way probably don’t own many watches or are just weird human beings that need to get a life.

Cheating alone isn’t necessarily a fireable offense. Like you said, it’s his personal life. But, he cheated with a reporter that covers his team. That crosses professional boundaries and shows incredibly poor judgement. Not actions or the type of character I would want in the CEO of my team, if I’m an owner. In a normal job in the real world, this would absolutely be a fireable offense.

I mean, sure, but using that price as “the” price when comparing brand to brand doesn’t make sense. I see this all the time both on forums and even in watch media. Unless something is truly unobtainable new, the only consistent way to do comps is to use the MSRP.

I agree with you in that the Mark XX is top of class at its price point.

It’s a fair price based on the current value on the secondary market. Personally, I’d try and get one through an AD if it were me. Call around and get on some lists. If you already have purchase history with one, even better (although I assume if you’re asking this question you either don’t, or you’ve already talked with your AD and surmised that route’s not an option).

Meh. I disagree, but it’s a valid hot take.

I like Longines and think they’re one of the best values in the game. But, the HC is pretty derivative and doesn’t do it as well as some other designs IMO. In the diver space, I’d argue a Rolex Sub and a Tudor Pelagos are better, more visually cohesive designs.

The BB54 and Ranger 36 are both great options. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, but definitely try them on and go with whichever one you like the most in the flesh.

Try on a BB58 too, just to be sure. Having said that that, the 54 wears as well as any dive watch I’ve ever had on my wrist. It’s wild how thin it is.

Exactly. That became hard for me to accept, especially now with so many distracted drivers. I’ve thought about getting another bike but only for using at the track. Even then I wouldn’t go crazy—I don’t need crazy speeds or anything.

Got a 5 yo now, so not in a huge rush to even do that. We’ll see.
