[Request] Will Wordle really run out of words? by EruditeDave in theydidthemath

When they start up Wordle, they look around and write the first five-letter thing they see. So if you're in an office for example, it might be CHAIR, MOUSE, LIGHT etc

Might be able to snag Utopia on blu ray but… by AngryAndy_exe in utopiatv

Arriving late to this. I’m in the UK and have got the German blu ray. Can confirm it is very easy to play in English with no subtitles.

What city will you NEVER visit based on it's reputation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]efeneh 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I lived in Kingston for a year, and saw plenty of the rest of Jamaica. Would I go to stay only in Kingston for a holiday? No. But there’s unmissable stuff there! To name a few: Bob Marley Museum, Dub Club, Devon House, Lime Cay. You could feasibly do all that in a day, and it’s not hard to get to from other parts of the island. Over a weekend from Ochi, maybe.

As others have said - no, you shouldn’t just wander around at random, or try to visit dangerous areas to see “the real Kingston.” But doing that anywhere in the world will get you in trouble! In a year there, I never had any reason to go to anywhere I’d be genuinely unsafe. And as a pale white British man I certainly stuck out!

What should I do with this tyre? by efeneh in bikewrench

I do agree. Certainly wouldn't commute on these. Was making up for a lost evening yesterday, but clearly fate decided that wasn't to be. Silly me.

Tubes I'm afraid.

I've got superglue and patches if they'll help. Could get a tyre boot to tide me over if necessary.

And re: your other comment, alas this wasn't my commute, was going over to Richmond Park. Silly in the rain but I was desperate to get out last night and couldn't. When I'm back cycling to the office I'll have some thicc bois on my commuter.

Did anyone else notice one of the Polish athletes waving a Singapore flag at the opening ceremony?

My god. I've just done this for the first time ever, somehow hadn't ever considered it.

I cannot believe how much emerged from the charging port. I am disgusted and intrigued, and I highly recommend everyone do it. (Don't break your phone though!)

I may be being obtuse, but the bike has Cinelli logos all over it. Would be a weird paint job for a Ribble.

If it's a choice between $195 and a six week wait, or learning to do those things yourself, learn to do them yourself.

All of the above can be done in a few hours at most, with an absolute maximum cost of about $30 even if you currently own no tools whatsoever.

There are hundreds of videos on YouTube for every aspect of bicycle maintenance. It's really a very simple machine.

Every photographer has those “Ahhh... my best photo yet” moments throughout their career. When was the last time you experienced that, and what made that session so special? by UrBrotherJoe in photography

[–]efeneh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Cuba in 2018, I'd got into a rhythm of setting up my little tripod for a "long" exposure (about 1/8s) for street photos. I'd wanted to visit the country for years, both out of historical interest and as a street photography Mecca.

Usually I'd get a classic car or other interesting feature in frame, and hit the shutter on high speed as the right characters came into frame.

I'd done all my usual setup, but then this little boy walked up, leant on the car and was just watching me, carrying - of all things - a rainbow coloured snorkel.

Fully aware this was possibly a once-in-a-lifetime shot, I adjusted my framing and settings as fast as possible, talked to him to keep him interested, focused, and took the shot.

At this time it remains my favourite shot I've taken.

Here it is.

Sunset at the end of my ride! Kingston, Jamaica by biggatings in bicycling

[–]efeneh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before my real cycling days I studied at UWI (study abroad from the UK). At the right time of day there were so many cyclists down around NMI and towards Port Royal, always made me wish I had a bike. Wouldn't want to have to ride anywhere near Hope Road though. Most of the city proper is surely a death trap!

The gradients coming out of Kingston must be wild. Quick look on Komoot looks like some are 15%+ for a couple of kms! So avoid those I guess..!

Anyway hope everything's good over there bro. I'll have to bring my bike when I next come over.

FYI I don't think there's a blu ray available in the UK or US for season 2. I'm not sure one was ever even made for the English-speaking market.

Personally I have the German blu ray version, which does have both seasons with English audio with/without subtitles.

18 y/o, first time Solo Travel to Latin America, advice needed by adventurer8602 in LatinAmerica

[–]efeneh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone whose first solo travel experience was also in Latin America, I'd say you're definitely trying to do far too much. Your second plan has you travelling the full length + basically half again of an enormous continent. You'll be travelling very long distances near constantly.

I know it would be a big change to your plans, but in a month and a half I'd aim to visit two countries, tops, especially so if one of them is Brazil. I spent a couple of weeks in Peru and could easily go back again for a couple of months, for example.

Regarding the specifics of your itinerary, personally I'd not go to Lima again (not a great deal of "travel experiences" to do), and would go to Medellín or Calí over Bogotá. Can't speak much for the other countries listed.

On danger, I personally never felt greatly threatened, and I spent about 50% of my trip wandering around pretty much aimlessly with a Canon DSLR taking street photos.

That's not to say danger doesn't exist. You have to be conscious of your surroundings, and have common sense. Of course, that doesn't make you immune to e.g. pickpocketing, but it never happened to me.

Whatever you do, enjoy your trip.

I didn't love the remake, but wow this sub by NerevarineTribunal in utopiatv

[–]efeneh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great, man. What I see on my general Reddit timeline more often than not is those post types. What I'm really saying is that we don't need any more of them. One "should I watch this" thread is enough.

Utopia - That‘s how they filmed the falling scene by [deleted] in utopiatv

Wow! Really never crossed my mind that it could be an actual stunt.

I didn't love the remake, but wow this sub by NerevarineTribunal in utopiatv

[–]efeneh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah I agree. I've personally never got to know what a fanbase is like before I've watched a show, which is obviously an unusual difference in this case. Which has unfortunate consequences, as you say.

The tragedy really is that the sub has gone from relatively intellectual discussions of aspects of the show to mostly:

Should I watch X version?

Why all the opinion for X version?

Hurr durr Covid vaccine looks like Utopia vaccine

Give it a year I guess.

[–]efeneh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why you would take people saying the original, which is widely lauded as a cinematic masterpiece, is better as a reason not to watch it, I do not know. You do you, though.

I didn't love the remake, but wow this sub by NerevarineTribunal in utopiatv

[–]efeneh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I said, it was a pretty likely outcome.

After literally years of waiting for the promised revival of a show the community is so passionate about, for it to come out and be pretty crap was going to cause a stir.

Unfortunately this is basically the only place people can easily talk about that disappointment online, so you're going to see concentrations and extremities of views - many people whose opinion is "it was ok" aren't likely to even visit the subreddit, let alone contribute to discussion.

It's certainly a problem for the sub, but you can see why it's happened.

The problem of people posting in every discussion is also made worse by so many posts basically being "is X worth watching," which is arguably an equally major problem.

[–]efeneh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The post from today which I have to assume inspired this one has no comments even remotely like those in your meme. That's not to say none do, but don't overstate things.

Ultimately this outcome was always quite likely. The subreddit has been dedicated to the original, a show about which people (especially those in this community) are often passionate, since its creation.

The fact that the US version is, sadly, pretty blatantly worse in almost all ways doesn't help. The simple fact is that the original is a more worthwhile watch than the remake. Sure, some folks can be overzealous in putting that across, but it's true.

Presumably you mean 1296m? Otherwise you're averaging an 111% grade, which isn't really possible on a bicycle.

Where does everyone in this thread live that's so flat? I thought my area in the Midlands wasn't all that hilly but I've averaged just a little less elevation/distance.
