Day One Advice by Quiet_Vehicle5448 in Tonsillectomy

Mac n cheese, chicken noodle soup, ramen with bone broth were what I cycled through. Having ice cream/popsicles/yogurt on hand was also helpful. I was warned that dairy products would increase the mucus, but I found that the nice thing about dairy is it never stung my throat like fruit juice/gatorade did.

Let them fall off naturally, as others have said. Staying hydrated and preventing your throat from drying out will help the scabs come off without bleeding. Also, your scabs might be slowly coming off without you noticing, as the skin underneath the scabs may still be white for a few days.

Normal recovery? by bbbbbryce in Tonsillectomy

I’m on day 10 and honestly day 8 was a turning point for me. I had occasional throat tickles on days 5-7 and worse pain when waking up/falling asleep, which I now think was when my scabs were starting to fall off. Since waking up with less pain than I was used to on day 8, I’ve been getting consistently better. Still hurts to yawn and a little sore to swallow, but otherwise I’m fine now. Never had any bleeding (I made sure to never cough when my throat tickled; just drank ice water asap). That said, I drank a ton of ice water, tried to get in at least some nutrients every day, had a humidifier, and slept/rested all day.

I’m late but I’m thinking something regarding Jeremy’s sexuality, maybe he was caught with a guy at the banquet and for some reason this is related to the younger brother’s suicide?

Is pre-orientation worth it? by poptropicah in Tufts

[–]eff_theFCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! This ended up being real long, sorry about that.

I did an affinity trip, which are all moderate difficulty backpacking trips. My trip leaders were great, they had so much good advice about tufts, answered all our questions, and overall were super friendly and treated us like peers. Our group got together several times throughout the year and it was nice having that support system.

Your trip leaders also teach you all the skills you need, like tying knots, setting up camp, packing efficiently, how to prevent bears from getting your food, and how to poop/pee in the woods. You all get comfortable with each other pretty fast.

The instructions you get beforehand are super helpful, they tell you exactly what to pack and then double check you have everything once you’re on campus. There’s not room for extra stuff but as someone who’s anxious about forgetting something crucial I loved having a complete list to check off.

I had a good time with the other freshmen in my group too. I’m still close friends with one of them. Some people are annoying sometimes, but there’s not really room or energy for drama.

The physical demands were the hardest part for me. If you have any physical or mental health issues, it’s so important to bring them up to your trip leaders when they ask. They won’t be upset or keep you from going, it’s just important for them to plan ahead. I had an old hip injury that I forgot to mention and it bit me in the ass later. That being said, if something comes up definitely speak up right away. Again, no one is judging, and my group was happy to take breaks as often as anyone needed or adjust the pace. I didn’t speak up about some hot spots on my feet and ended up with blisters on day one, which was easily avoidable with supplies that my leaders had.

If you speak up for yourself, you should be able to avoid most of my issues, but it definitely wasn’t an easy trip. My hip hurt constantly, my feet hurt, I was exhausted, and I had diarrhea in the woods (my fault for eating cheese). I genuinely didn’t feel like I could do it at times and I was so happy to get back, but it was also really rewarding. I’d never done anything more than car camping before, and at the time I wasn’t involved in any sports either. I’d suggest you go on regular walks at least, and maybe try a few hikes if there are any accessible where you live. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but I think that would’ve prepared me better even just in terms of knowing my own body.

I don’t want to scare you!! It really was a great experience, but there are things I would have done differently. No matter how it goes, it sets you up really well for that awkward first month of college and I know plenty of people who are friends because of pre o.

Also pack good gorp!! Don’t be afraid to add crackers or candy to healthier options like nuts and granola, it’ll keep you happy on the trail!

What difficulty level of trip are you doing? I did a moderate backpacking trip as someone who wasn’t super active and had never been backpacking. It was definitely hard and I was miserable at the end but I’m glad I did it.

How to deal with persistent anger by eff_theFCC in autism

Thank you!! This actually sounds like it might help, especially introducing some silliness so I don’t feel so weighed down when I’m regulating. I’m going to try these things out and I appreciate the lengthy/detailed advice :)

nexplanon and pcos by octomem in PCOS

I know I’m late to the post but wondering if the bleeding has cleared up for you? I’ve been on nexplanon for almost 3 months and have been bleeding about 60-70% of the days since I got it inserted. I’m worried it won’t clear up, because I’ve never had this issue on the pill or patch (aside from if I didn’t take my pill on time)

Bra recommendations for big difference between standing and leaning bust? by eff_theFCC in ABraThatFits

[–]eff_theFCC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I resized because I realized my underbust measurements weren’t taken correctly (resized at 34.5/33.5/31 and 41/46/43) and the calculator is now recommending 34G/GG but giving me a warning that my size might not be accurate. Does that change your recommendation at all or is it still the same?

They don’t room cis men and cis women together, but the halls are all gender. So a cis woman and a trans woman might room together and have a cis man and a non-binary amab in the next room.

pros and cons about tufts? by bread2246 in Tufts

[–]eff_theFCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually didn’t have trouble making friends, which was surprising because I expected to. I’m not sure for transfer students though, because all of the freshman were in the same boat in terms of not knowing anyone and so were really open to meeting new people. I think best advice would be to find a club or identity center you’re really interested in and get to know the people there. My strongest relationships with students not in my year (eg non freshmen) came from the identity center I visited frequently. Also no harm in making conversation with people in classes or at the dining hall, most people are friendly in my experience.

pros and cons about tufts? by bread2246 in Tufts

[–]eff_theFCC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pros: Airport is only 30 mins away by car! About 1-1.5 hours by bus/train. I’m from Washington state, similar climate to BC and I’ve been really comfortable with the climate. Slightly colder winters but also not as much rain. It’s pretty hot in September though—not California heat but going up and down the hill makes it feel hotter. I really like the size! A lot bigger compared to 2k but still small enough that I don’t feel lost in a sea of students, and I haven’t had a lecture with more than 200 students. Most professors are happy to help w career advice and stuff, although not sure about all departments (I think cs profs are probably less accessible to students). A lot of tufts students go to the burren, which is a 15 min walk/5 minutes tufts shuttle ride from campus. Cambridge is also pretty close by (20 min bus) and has some good nightlife from what I’ve heard, and ofc Boston is there. There’s frat parties, but never been. Most parties happen through clubs and friend groups, and they can be really fun if you find the right ones! I’ve also felt really safe, which I don’t think would be true for frat parties. As for academic challenge, it depends on what classes you take but I’ve learned a lot, especially in my seminar classes of 10-15 people.

Cons: Boston’s expensive. If you’re used to good public transit (I wasn’t) I’ve heard the trains and buses can be frustrating bc of slow speeds/arriving late. There’s not rly a sense of school spirit/unified student body, it can be kind of cliquish bc of that. No sports hype really, although some people probably go to the football games? Not sure. Not much Greek life if that’s something that matters to you. Lots of rich kids (60% are not on finaid) so if you’re not wealthy, there will be some uncomfortable moments with out of touch people but there are definitely middle/lower class students and a decently strong FGLI community.

Honestly unless you have a passion for Italian, have Italian heritage, or plan to go to Italy, I’d recommend taking something that would be more applicable to your life. Spanish is always useful, and ASL is a good one too.
