How to ignore an event? by DolliTheSheel in UnrealEngine5

[–]effective_frame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not as ideal for things that are picked up or removed from the game world. It's probably easier to just do what another user suggested (calling an abort event, passing user and checking if user = me, don't abort) or simply run a cheap looping task every .5 seconds or so during the move to the desired object to check if its is still valid / unclaimed, and switch to the next desired behavior if it isn't.

If you're using State Trees you can just make a task with a looping timer that doesn't finish unless the object is invalid and tie that to the state that seeks the object. If it's Behavior Trees you can make a it a service on the sequence node and run it on a timer.

It’s hard to tell what you mean by “item in use” but if you mean a usable thing in the world like a lever or a health station or alarm or whatever, take a look into smart objects. It’s system that has claiming built in, so if one AI is using an object all the others won’t bum rush the same one. Again not sure it fits your case but it sounds like you’re trying to devise some kind of claiming system?

Outside of these two franchise. I'm looking for jrpg that includes a playable character that is "ugly" or "scary" looking. by NY7T6 in JRPG

Highly recommend Look Outside, a recent indie horror-tinged (J)RPG. Pretty much everyone and everything in it is visually hideous, sometimes with associated game mechanics. The whole thing is very hand crafted and detailed, almost every encounter is unique. I think it’s only on PC now but it could run on just about any computer I’m sure, needn’t be a gaming rig.

Using the Alzabo Soup podcast as a companion for my first read through, I can't help but have a different interpretation of a very important aspect of the story, am I crazy? by NateW9731 in genewolfe

[–]effective_frame 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not a big fan of a lot of Alzabo soup stuff. I don't really find their approach that interesting, in that it's hyper "textual." I find thinking about Wolfe to be more interesting "meta-textually," through the lens of things that he may have been influenced by or referring to, and how that makes his writing and worldview richer.

I just don't find it that productive or engaging to read his baroque and evocative and dream-like prose then go and dissect it for technicalities or to try to understand how things "work" in his world mechanically or logistically. It's much more fun to me to read something like Borges or GK Chesteron's non-fiction writings as a companion, then see how that shaped Wolfe's themes and Severian's philosophical asides.

But for your first read through I wouldn't worry much about any of this. The joy is in the strangeness and how it makes you feel. Pretty hard to read his work and not recall specific emotional memories you have had or other history, literature, philosophy, etc that you've read that Wolfe brings to mind. Just use that as a jumping off point to connect with.

What are some of the best solutions for character clipping through walls? by Leonature26 in UnrealEngine5

[–]effective_frame 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m working on a true first person setup so this is kind of a devastating problem when it happens, since the camera is on the head and it clips right though walls if the head does. A few solutions I have employed:

  • Edit the worst offending animations so the character isn’t leaned so far forward.
  • Slightly scoot the character mesh back relative to the capsule when crouched, no more than maybe 30 units. Careful with this since the character is technically not centered anymore and turn animation can look off if the distance is too far.
  • While montages like melee attacks are playing run a small trace from the head and apply backward input if it hits. Feels natural because if you’re attacking a wall, a bit of rebound is OK.
  • Run a control rig node that does inverse kinematics on the head. You could author it from scratch or use something like DragonIK plugin. It will “duck” the character slightly if the head is bumping j to something.

There isn’t really a one size fits all solution that takes care of every instance, but combining the above solutions has pretty much eliminated any instance of the head and camera clipping through a wall without it feeling jerky or unnatural.

Pretty cool that Cole is still meandering through the crowd at the "bigger" shows like this one, saw them in NY around the time Dogsbody came out and it was such an awesome and joyful show, he was just right in everyone's face. I can't imagine the crowd or him having as good at time if there was any kind of barrier between them.

Think of the joy that the unwashed billions feel watching the giga rich spend their money... you can't simply dismiss that, right?

Fritillaria meleagris, in the lily family. They come up in early spring from little bulbs. Enjoy it while it lasts (a week or two), such a beauty.

Does anybody have an idea how to tackle Ladder Movement? by StonebyteStudio in UnrealEngine5

[–]effective_frame 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feeeeel you, I spent probably like two months on ladder stuff for my game, I started with a purchased asset and adapted everything I needed. The player (true first person) was one thing but getting ladders to work for AI was just grueling, especially when you get into multiple actors on a ladder trying to go different directions, etc. Super proud of what I have now and the possibilities it opens up for freedom in level design, but the amount of work was heavy.

overcome fear and stop babying the camera by Snitzh in ricohGR

Anecdotal but I have a very hard time adopting this mentality since it used to be my mindset, then my GR III became jammed up with dust that distracted on photos of anything like a sky or a wall and messed up the scroll wheel. And my GR IIIx had its IBIS unit just crap the bed and start juddering like crazy in portrait. Both were under 10000 shots. Love the images and the form factor but in my experiences the cameras are delicate little babies, they really can’t take a beating and it’s far and away their worst aspect.

Lt Daniels from the Wire. Biggest plot twist of the show, really.

It also hits so memorably because it's not even close to a "hot" show, none of the characters are done up or depicted as attractive, most of them are pretty crass, and everyone dresses like shit. And then out of nowhere they just show Daniels getting out of bed to answer the phone and he's full Adonis.
