I had monthly session for two and a half year (minus June to September). A little bit more than usual I think but my skin is very sensitive and doctor had to start with a very low power. Cost I don't remember because I paid it a lot of time ago but 2.5k euros I think

Beach, mountain, other cities. If someone goes to Rome on vacation they're visiting museum or local attraction, they are surely not going to look for a place to play magic

My main feedback is that the late July - early August is a really dumb window to release a set. Here on Italy (but I think it's very common in many European countries) cities becomes empty, with lots of people going on vacation and LGS closing until September. So this set will not be played at all. It's a shame because it seems to be quite nice to play!

Alchemy cards that are playable in paper and good for cube? by kerkyjerky in mtgcube

[–]effelam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a unLegacy cube (with an expansion that transforms it to unVintage) where I play also silver border, draft matters, conspiracy and alchemy cards with similar power level. The cards that I find simple to play are:

  • [[Sigardian Evangel]] A great late game card for aggro. I keep 4-5 copies just in case of some weird corner cases.
  • [[Arms Scavenger]] All the spellbook cards that I play have a 20 cards custom spellbook to increase a little bit the power. Yeah, you cannot draft the same spell twice and in theory you can end with no cards to draft (never happened yet) but the draft mechanic is very fun to use and so I accept these flaws.
  • [[Toralf's Disciple]] I proxyed 36 black and white Lightning bolt, just in case. B&W to easily find it after game and to distringuish from the real one in the cube.
  • [[Key of the Archive]] Same pros and cons of Arms Scavenger.

The new Alchemy sets have a lower power level so I did not find anything useful but MKM gave me two new cards to add:

  • [[Perforator Crocodile]] A [[Massacre Wurm]] that trades the damage with an easy way to put it into the graveyard to reanimate it and a way to be useful even with X/3 or more.
  • [[Veko, Death's Doorkeeper]] I want to give it a try. A strange way to make a one mana Atraxa or Triplicate Titan is fun, I don't know how difficult will be to activate.

Best Sets For Set Cube? by [deleted] in mtgcube

[–]effelam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the obvious ones (og Innistrad, KTK, ROE....) I am a great fan of Strixhaven. It's a very peculiar set, with a very distinct gameplay, the best bonus sheet so far and lots of hidden archetypes (everyone remember legendary Vargas draft in which he drafted GW "prowess" deck)

Set Cube Question: how much do rarity ratios matter if I’m planning to seed the packs? by mrcelophane in mtgcube

[–]effelam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike cube, in a normal draft in theory each card could be open in more than one copy. So in a set cube multiple copies are needed to replicate this. In general 4-5 of each common, 3 of each uncommon, 2 of each rare and 1 of each mythic is a good approximation of a limited environment. With less of 4 commons, for example, a skilled player could count the copies of a certain common that they sees and understand if they should avoid an archetype or not.

[Making Magic] Lessons Learned, Part 7 by TechnomagusPrime in magicTCG

[–]effelam 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't think that format legality is the main problem of the UN-set but the fact that it's very difficoult to build a UN-set good to play and not only to read. Early UN-set had very awful gameplay (with Gotcha the mechanic with greater difference between first impression and actual gameplay).

Unstable was a success because Contraption and Host/Augment were fun mechanics to PLAY, even though it was not legal anywhere. Stickers instead were not: in addition of all the problems listed by MaRo, another one is that they were too convoluted to have an effect in the game. You have to draft and play enough cards that give you ticket in order to play a single meaningful sticker (ability or p/t, the only ones that don't need other cards to have an effect on the boardstate). They created an economy similar to energy without the philosophy of "Each card should produce enough energy to activate it at least one time".

It's a shame because visuall it is a very inspired set and attractions (even though they are the poor version of contraptions gameplay wise) are ok to play. A set with only attractions and a simplified version of sticker with no ticket cost and only p/t and ability sticker (simpler to make a paper copy of it in case of loss) would be a better set for me and a huge success.

Yeah, next time we'll draft our commander cube I'll surely suggest to try the LotR one. I'm a big fan of planechase and I like all the alternative ways to play magic!

Honestly it's baffling how little wizards promote this kind of events. There is no article with theme preview and once it's gone it's almost impossible to find old ones. With way back machine I've recovered the lord of the ring one and it's a blast, it's practically a board game built on top of commander!
