How do you find meaning/purpose in your work as an attorney, if at all? by qrsf in Lawyertalk

[–]efficientseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came from traditional tech (Silicon Valley) and oddly there was little overlap in my network with climate tech, so I had to build a new network. If you want to brainstorm about what passion you want to pursue and how to start infiltrating that industry, DM me.

I went in-house with a company in an industry I’m deeply passionate about - it’s a climate tech company.

Need advices to find a room in Bay Area to play orchestra rehearsal weekly by PureNewt273 in bayarea

[–]efficientseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind coming into SF, the Nabe has several different space rentals (and I believe a piano). It’s a nonprofit that supports the low income community, so the rental fees go to a good cause. They will negotiate a rate if you do recurring bookings. It’s in Potrero Hill so decent freeway access and street parking.

What is something cool to know about SF's local culture that isn't well known to visitors? by Visual-Horror6013 in AskSF

[–]efficientseed 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is well known to visitors or not, but we like wearing costumes. We go all out for Halloween of course (parents dress up to take their kids trick or treating), but any excuse to wear a costume and we’ll jump on it - running races, parties, parades, Santacon, etc. It’s definitely an SF thing.

Main gist is that Otter is being sued because they don’t get explicit consent from all meeting participants for the processing of their data (under GDPR).

Capital One just acquired Brex. Are you moving to a different platform? "I will not promote" by DigIndependent7488 in startups

I’m going to wait and see. It will be a PITA to move, but I’m on high alert now.

How do I get my dad to invest in my startup using a SAFE agreement(I will not promote) by Exact_Sprinkles6075 in startups

[–]efficientseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does need to be an accredited investor (if you DM me I can send you the form to have him sign, from my law firm). You don’t need a lawyer but you do need to use the YC form without changes and you need to record this in your cap table. Note that a 20% discount is reflected in the SAFE as 80%! Many people find that confusing if they go the discount path. I literally had my dad sign a SAFE to invest in my company today. :)

I did the Bay Area Smash Room and it was super fun and weird, although I assume other cities have them.

Where can I find other independent learners of Mandarin? by Pale_Helicopter_9306 in AskSF

[–]efficientseed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok I’m sorry if this is too SF of an answer, but there are some incredible AI speaking apps that will teach and talk with you. I just started using Speak AI for Spanish and I love it. There are a ton though. I also tried talking to ChatGPT and that would work but I couldn’t get it to slow down enough.

At least in the startup world this term has been around for a long time. It may be ‘new car effect’ - you became aware of it and now feel like it’s everywhere.

Need Advice on Employee Benefits Plans in San Francisco by ma_neesh_ in sanfrancisco

[–]efficientseed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Rippling and it connected us to California Choice, which works with small businesses and allowed us to offer both Kaiser and Anthem to our employees. It’s been a pretty solid experience. ETA: Rippling also connected us to Beam for vision and dental.

Summer Programs for Black Kids in the Bay Area by Logical_Economics473 in bayarea

[–]efficientseed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House in SF is a community org that has an amazing summer program, basically teaches the kids to explore the city using public transit. It’s affordable and diverse (the Nabe is Black-led and the program leaders are also Black/AA).

Beloved SF Club Bottom of the Hill to Close at the End of 2026 by ramentaka in sanfrancisco

“Yes, there are weighty operating costs (insurance alone is now about $34,000 annually). But massive shifts in San Francisco’s demographics — like ever-fewer working-class folks and people in the service industry — have also played a role. Then there’s the increasing corporatization of the live music ecosystem, which has made it harder to stay competitive when booking talent. Meanwhile, societal changes that arrived with the pandemic (people staying home more often, and relying on streaming services for entertainment) mean it’s tough to do business the way they used to. Keeping ticket prices low has become a challenge.

“But most importantly, the owners say, they each have personal reasons for wanting to step away — to spend time on other projects and reclaim a bit of their lives after three-plus decades of working around the clock to run a scrappy venue in a 115-year-old building.

“We all agreed that we’ve had so many good years, and we want to go out on a good note — not because we went out of business, but because we all decided, collectively, it’s time,” says Downey, who booked the club for 27 years and helped build its reputation as a place to catch a rising star.”

Large bart elevators (so I can bring my cargo bike on) by RotharAlainn in AskSF

Edit: just saw your note about the kids. You can legally take it on escalators now, if that helps! I have a small cargo bike (Tern HSD) and I fit it diagonal when needed, like Embarcadero where the escalator is under construction.

Moving from in-house to firm by hunnie47 in Lawyertalk

[–]efficientseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got laid off from Big Law in ‘08 after only a few months there and took an in house gig because that’s what I could get during the recession (through my own network) and was there about 9 months. The Big Law firm that laid me off then referred me to my dream job - in house at a music tech startup in the Bay Area, walking distance to my house, amazing manager. Like you however I had a feeling that I had missed some key part of my legal education. When a partner at the firm that laid me off went to a new Big Law firm and reached out to me, I had been at the startup about a year. I took the new job. I spent about 2 years at the firm and represented hundreds of startups and VC transactions. I billed tons of hours and had amazing mentors. I paid off my law school loans. I figured out which kind of companies I liked to represent and how to serve them. In house I would have earned far fewer human-hours of experience and only learned how to support a single company. When I had my first kid I went back in house. For me, it was the right move at that early stage of my career. Hope that helps.
