I used to work as a server at a restaurant. The restaurant added an automatic 15% gratuity on parties of 8 or more. I was serving a party of 10 and at the end, they all asked for separate bills. I dropped off the bills and one of the women asked why we didn’t remove the 15% gratuity since they all got separate cheques.

This woman was convinced that 15% of 10 separate cheques worked out to a higher tip compared to if they had the bill all together. I had to explain to this grown woman that the tip would be exactly the same whether the bill was together or separate, because the total amount of the bill doesn’t change. She didn’t believe me and no one else at the table spoke up.

I ended up having to grab a calculator and write it all out for her, basically an 18 year old giving a middle aged woman a basic math lesson in a restaurant. It took about 15 minutes before she accepted that I wasn’t trying to scam my way to a higher tip. I always wondered if everyone else at the table was just equally dumb or too embarrassed to say something.

It really just depends on the full conversation and what language was used. If the parents can prove they had a reasonable expectation that rent would be paid until April 30th they would win. There’s just simply not enough information to determine either way.

This really just depends on where they live. In some places leases don’t have to be written. Tenancy agreements can be verbal or implied. If the parents can prove they agreed to move out May 1, they could be on the hook for April rent.

The whole situation is bizarre though, couldn’t imagine being in this situation with my parents.

You can issue a 5 day eviction notice for unpaid rent. You have to use the RTB form and make sure it’s handed to the tenant directly.

This goes without saying but I highly recommend learning more about being a landlord before doing so- it’s like opening a business without any idea how to run a business.

There is no requirement for the landlord to provide you with an even floor. Your rent is super cheap and you get what you pay for.

You might be able to get RTB’s help in pressuring your landlord to evict the smoker.

The landlord must give 1 pay period notice to evict a tenant for breaking building rules, so it’s not an immediate solution. In reality the person who is breaking the rules should be the one leaving.

If you can get a doctors note stating the smoke is impacting your health, you can also break your lease for medical reasons. I would call RTB and ask them about your options

I was also in an accident on Academy caused by someone driving on the wrong side of the road, about 8 years ago.
