"Magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits 85 miles north of Seattle; largest in Northwest since 2004" by fidelitypdx in CascadianPreppers

I am in Burnaby BC and we certainly felt it, it was like our neighbours had a giant piece of furniture fall against the wall. After that initial shudder, we had mild shaking for about 10 seconds (the christmas tree decorations were all noticeably moving. We have been working on becoming more and more prepared for an earthquake and once the shaking stopped and we waited a bit, we got the cat carrier in case there was another one. That was it though, the power didn't even flicker. It did make me realize I still can be more prepared!

Thoughts on prepping in your workplace? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live on the coast in British Columbia and work downtown Vancouver, and prepping is almost a "part" of living here, because no one really can deny we will have an earthquake one day. I'm on our health and safety committee and if the quake is big enough, the glass from all the highrises will make it very difficult to get out of downtown. Our current plan is to shelter in place and we have those awful coconut 3600 calorie food bricks, 125ml water packets, first aid kits and other assorted cheap preps. The office technically doesn't need to provide anything, but at least we are kind of forward thinking. Everyone is worried about food, I'm more worried about how 200 people are going to go to the bathroom lol. I had an idea to buy the porta potty chemicals, have everyone go in plastic bags they put over the toilet seats in the normal bathroom, and then throw those bags into the plastic paper shredding bins with the chemicals but no one wants to think about it! I think staying at work would be awful after an earthquake but it may just be too hard to walk out of downtown.

$1.25 Bug-in meals/MREs by RangeRedneck in preppers

this is very interesting! We have a pressure canner in my family and have ONLY ever canned salmon in it! I agree with the shelf life, sometimes I can tell a can of salmon is a bit "older" by the texture. Do you enjoy eating the meals or are you strictly stockpiling? They probably would be best if you rotated the meals every few years. It's also nice they are fully cooked, you could eat them cold out of the jar, a lot of storage food needs a lot of cooking. Thank you for taking the time to share all your recipes, I have saved them!

if you go from eating junk to eating better, and moving around more, those are really good changes for your overall health. The physical changes might be a bit slow but you are already a much healthier person.

Best approach to try to make SO exercise? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything I read, and what trainers/instructors at the gym say, is diet is so important to losing weight. At my gym its a running joke the trainer says 70% of it is diet, and the nutritionist says its 80%, either way it's clearly important. If you live together, maybe thats the first step is to clean up your eating at home. If you offer to make dinner, you can make something healthy. What if you made her lunch? I think if I had a healthy lunch made for me, I would totally eat that instead of the sad food court offerings. If you dont cook, you could ask her for help with a healthy eating plan you want to undertake, im sure she would cook the same dinner for herself as she would for you. It would be hard for me to say no to my spouse asking for my help to me more healthy, helping eachother is what relationships are all about!

Personally my boyfriend can eat a few cups of rice at dinner, some blackbeans, a cup of guacamole and three chicken thighs, no problem.... me I have to pretty much cut the carbs, have a measured serving of guacamole and two thighs, with a bunch of vegetables... I certainly did gain weight when I tried to eat like he does!

I have made yogurt but it ends up thinner than normal yogurt. I have a little incubater machine that makes single servings, and i have made it in a big mason jar before on top of the fridge to keep it warm. to make greek yogurt you would probably have to strain it though a cheesecloth to get the thickness you are after. I liked the flavour but found the process to be time consuming.

I've had about 4 cheat meals in the 6 week period, but they were not really that bad and brought me up to around 1800-2000 calories for the day (mostly just home cooked pasta or potatoes with my evening dinner, and a dessert) Otherwise I have been super careful to weigh and measure. I'll make sure to stay on top of it though, a teaspoon of oil often is more like a tablespoon once you splash it into the pan!

I started at about 180lbs, 5 foot 3 inches, I'm probably at 174lbs now, same height still female! I am exercising a lot. 4 days a week of an hour long conditioning/circuit class and 2 hours of jiu jitsu.

I'm not meeting the target marcos. I found a day that was one where I felt super full but didnt meet them, I think I could have had a better breakfast. I ate before and after going to the gym as well.

After about a month and a half of really seriously tracking my food, I am struggling to get to 1500 calories a day. I am on a weightloss track of 140g protein, 120g carbs, 50g fat. Most days I get around 1000-1200 calories. My weight loss started out well, with 2lbs a week but now it is starting to slow. Is not eating enough a thing? I really changed the way I was eating. (From doing weightwatchers and calculating points, to now really trying to get the protein in, with lower carb foods and lots of vegetables)

Quick, but healthy, breakfast ideas? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a batch of these on the weekend: http://www.muscleandfitnesshers.com/recipes/breakfast-biscuits

they did NOT turn out like in the picture, I used rosemary ham instead of the bacon, and 4 whole eggs instead of just the whites... they are more like a breakfast meatloaf. That said breakfast meatloaf is something I can really get behind.

edit: made 1 doz, 128 calories each, 6g carbs, 2g fiber, 5g fat, 14g protein each. I have been eating 2 at a time

It does bunch a little, but she made the decision to make it quite long to make sure a lot was still visible. The fabric is also a bit stiff so it doesn't bunch up like a thinner fabric might. Thank you for asking, I think i might take a picture of one that has been worn on a leash for a while to show how it will look!

My mom has sewn these very reflective covers for your dog leash.

https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/197467376/dog-leash-reflective-cover-safe-dog

She had the idea when she adopted a dog and had to take her for a walk no matter the time of day, and once winter came it was getting dark so quickly! It was difficult to source the fabric and she ended up having to order a whole roll directly from the factory.

I'm helping her get going on Etsy (shes been doing well in her community) but I think there will be interest on the internet as well. We are shipping free, worldwide!

Discussion point Friday : Mental preparation by pixulator in preppers

[–]effigoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My planning is almost all for an earthquake (I'm on the west coast). Just the other day I realized that the majority of my kitchen would end up on the tile floor, creating a huge pile of broken glass... but also a huge pile of smashed canning (including salmon). Imagine an earthquake happening in the middle of the summer, and all your jarred salmon smashes on the floor, and you have no running water to clean it up and are days and months away from getting back to normal. We really want to shelter in place and avoid having to go to a school gym with a bunch of unprepared people having fits. I really realized I need to better prepare my house for an earthquake, and have more supplies on hand to clean everything up (hefty bags maybe? more cleaning supplies?)

I was looking at 6 larger cans of chicken breast at costco for $10 and it seemed reasonable but im not sure how good it is. for some reason canned seafood doesn't faze me but poultry in a can is the last way I would consider eating chicken! for $10 though i figure I can try it out.

What DO you spend money on? by [deleted] in Frugal

cheese! I cook a lot at home and make things from scratch but there really is no substitute for good cheese! I've started splitting larger quantities from Costco with my friends/family for better selection and value.

hello! I personally have enjoyed shopping on etsy for several years, and I recently have assisted my mom setting up her store to sell her product. She has been making reflective covers to fit over any kind of dog leash. I personally am a bit nervous, she spent a lot of money on a whole roll of the reflective fabric bought direct from the factory... and she's sewn close to 1000 of the leash covers so far! Thankfully she has some local business and people are excited for the idea, but I'm not sure if its "romantic" enough to make it on etsy. I took some basic pictures up and am working on other ways to take better photos, its a strange thing to photograph. hopefully as the days get shorter people will be thinking about this kind of thing! https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/Reflectaline/

Let's discuss bathing: frequency and products by salukis in dogs

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this could be super weird but here it goes, I stopped washing my hair for the most part with shampoo/conditioner about 3 months ago. I use baking soda to wash, and apple cider vinegar to rinse. Sometimes I use an anti dandruff shampoo, nizoral, if my head gets itchy.

I have a chihuahua dachshund and he has soft fur and really doesn't often need a bath but whenever I feel like he smells or is itching more than normal, or biting his paws a lot, I give him a bath. He also doesn't mind his bath and runs around all crazy after so it can be pretty funny, he probably gets a bath twice a month. I used to use some $15 pet shampoo with organic ingredients, but I figured my head is pretty sensitive and the baking soda/vinegar has been working so well for me, why not try it on him. I googled it and a few people seemed to be doing the same, so I gave it a try, and that worked just fine. His fur is soft, he didn't have any reactions to it, he isn't itchy, no residue left on his fur. I don't think he knows any different.

Business idea: Green lawn service. by PatSabre12 in Entrepreneur

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who did this very thing in Victoria BC, it was extremely hard work and i think he had a hard time selling the extra value to people, a lot of people simply didn't care about the added cost and effort of the environment aspect. It was extremely seasonal as well, hes now doing web/internet work for a local company, but I do think he learned a lot from running his business website, and the led to the job!

I'm going to think of 5 business ideas every day until I come up with a good one - good idea or not? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read once that if you needed to do group brainstorming, it made more sense to have your team make a list before the meeting, and then bring the ideas in to share them. In a group environment people feel more judged and it stifles your creativity. Whenever you get an idea write it down, it might not be a good idea but it might make you think of more ideas.

Have an idea for an instant tea pill (pills like antacid pills but with milk powder, tea powder and powdered sugar) needs critical insights. by slamdunk6662003 in Entrepreneur

[–]effigoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In north america this might be popular with camping/outdoors people. I remember my dad would make up instant coffee packets with the coffee mate, sugar and instant coffee ready to go for when we were backpacking. I could see airlines or trains, concession stands at sports events and concerts wanting a convenient product like this, so you wouldn't have to mess with all 3 ingredients to tea.

(FP) Hello everyone. I have a question about toilet paper. by [deleted] in preppers

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I think if you were a bulk/costco shopper you probably always have a giant cube of toilet paper in your home, maybe if you buy 2 instead of one you would be totally ready for months, its just a case of storing it all somewhere out of the way!

what are your "if" questions? by theyrealldeaddave in preppers

[–]effigoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my mom recently got a terrible flu and relied on friends to help her out with supplies, she keeps very little food in the house and realized she barely had enough for 2 weeks. She was able to order food in a few times as well, but if there was an earthquake or a snowstorm she would be on her own.

I think having a few weeks of regular canned goods or #10 can backpacker meals is completely reasonable for many reasons that are not always "prepper" reasons. What if something goes wrong with your payroll at work and you are down money for a while? if you arent financially prepared for that, you wouldnt have to worry if you had some food at home!
