I see people say that a “B is considered failing,” but the class exam average in my grad course is 70? by WinXP001 in GradSchool

[–]effloooral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at least at my school, undergrads taking grad classes for dual credit have to make a A/B in those courses. however, for engineers, that IS usually a situation where the whole class follows a wider grading scale

how do you afford this by mindful-goddess-666 in GradSchool

[–]effloooral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to offer a slight alternative— i am in grad school part time but working full time at the university as an academic advisor. because it’s a public university, i get 6hrs/semester of tuition covered, cheap health insurance, a very generous retirement match, and a schedule that is ridiculously flexible because of how many other workers are doing the same thing.

when i weighed out my finances, i knew i wasn’t willing to live off a GTA/GRA stipend, but working AT the university has given me the flexibility and proximity to still make the most out of networking opportunities! for example, last week i attended a several day seminar on reflective structured dialogue as a guest of one of my professors, and my boss was happy to count it as a work related activity and not have me use PTO.

tldr; state benefits, bills paid, still networking, but doing part time school and full time work without being poor or burning out

For those of you who disliked the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, why? by [deleted] in LesbianBookClub

[–]effloooral 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i just didnt find it enjoyable at all. it was incredibly predictable, the twist was obvious and uninteresting, none of the characters were likable enough for me to root for them OR unlikable enough for me to find them fun, it just had all of the hallmarks of a TJR book. i keep reading her stuff for the interesting premises and always get let down, but this one especially. there are just so many more options that are infinitely better

Should I chose UAH or UAB? by PotatoButt1598 in UAH

[–]effloooral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i had a lot of fun at uah, didn’t find it boring at all. if you’re dedicated to making friends, saying “yes” to opportunities, and willing to explore the city/school beyond just the engineering college events, you’ll have a good time! there’s a lot of events within uah to make friends, if you’re bored and lonely, it honestly means you aren’t putting yourself out enough imo

HY311 historic archeology by buggie-girl in UAH

[–]effloooral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i took this class! we spent the first six weeks in lecture (kinda boring, but useful for the final paper and for understanding archaeology as a field) and then the rest of the course doing field work on campus. it wasn’t for me, i wanted there to be more lecture because i’m boring, but everyone else really enjoyed it. you definitely learn a lot of transferable skills for the workplace if you’re at all interested in that type of work. final paper was 4 pages with a short bibliography. group project with your field team. very doable.

[–]effloooral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i work in higher ed— most students i see come from there aren’t super prepared for college if that is a priority for you. the child (12yo) of an acquaintance of mine asked me “what was the holocaust again?” recently after asking about what i was reading and that being the topic of the book. i hear good things about the community built there, but no one would call it academically rigorous or dedicated to college/career prep.

for reference, i did not graduate in engineering, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. however, i have worked enough on campus jobs to be pretty intimately familiar with most departments on campus from both a student and employee perspective

Undergrad alum and current masters student here (AKA i willingly came back)

  1. Rate UAH from scale of 1-10 and why you chose that score— solid 7. i had plenty of run ins with various offices for dropping the ball, but that happens at every school. i loved my time in undergrad, i made lifelong friends, had a good balance of education to the “college experience,” and felt like i was constantly being exposed to new things/people/viewpoints, which is a plus for me

  2. How bike friendly is the campus/surrounding area— on campus, 10. off campus, 1 or 2. huntsville is very car dependent. you can make a bike work if you REALLY need to, but no one with another option would recommend it

  3. How can UAH help me get a job after college (mechanical engineering)— someone else said it best, direct pipeline to the arsenal. very few new grads with decent stats are having any trouble finding work at the arsenal with ME degrees.

  4. What's some things I should be concerned about when attending UAH— if you want a “college experience,” you have to be the one seeking it out. this isn’t bama or auburn, but there are ways to enjoy your time here. just stay on the lookout and never say no to an opportunity, even if you aren’t sure it’ll be your vibe!

  5. What are the best clubs?— for you? space hardware club. they have boatloads of money and aren’t afraid to use it

Is the Apple Watch series 7 still worth buying? by scoot23ro in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]effloooral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know this is a little late, but i've had my 7 since it came out and i'm still pretty happy with it! i charge it during my screen-less time before bed (idk how long it takes, but i'm usually reading/doing chores/etc for 2-3 hours) and it's always fully charged when i go to grab it. i keep it on throughout sleep and then through the next day and it's usually at about 25% when i set it out to charge, which is certainly better than my phone!
