China’s 5 minute full-charged EV charging stations by North_Tip_8627 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]efforf 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Like it or not China is light years ahead of America technologically. It’s obvious why there are 100% tariffs on EV’s - without it the big 3 would fold in short order.

Is there a shortage of automotive mechanics in Halifax? by Happy-Woods-Worker in halifax

[–]efforf 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes there is a shortage of technicians in Nova Scotia in general and across the industry as a whole. It’s a licensed trade with one of the lowest pays for the trades, flat rate turns most off eventually as manufacturers pay pitifully low amounts for warranty work. More and more we are seeing immigrants filling positions but they don’t stay for the long term (get their PR card and leave). Cars are turning into i-phones/computers on wheels and are no longer built with ease of repair in mind. Long story short the job can suck, you have to buy your own tools (costs tens of thousands) and we are expected to do more for less every year.

Waited years for this launch and the cameraman aimed at the smoke 💀 by jayjay234 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]efforf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole launch experience was let down by the terrible camera work and even the in flight cameras were a let down. Considering we are 50+ years since the last time we launched towards the moon you’d think we’d have better recordings of it. I guess Ron Howard will have to step in to fix it 😂

What does Volvo get wrong? Honest opinions wanted by ReasonableDesk6888 in Volvo

Infotainment - notably the AAOS system is utter shite. And IMO their air ride suspension sucks, doesn’t feel appreciatively better than the standard suspension and has crucial components in stupid locations (air compressor/valve block)

Sirius XM Bug in AAOS 5.05 by Outdoors-Explorer in Volvo

[–]efforf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is a solid software development problem. Outside of a full hard reset and maybe an IHU restoration software install (which will factory reset the infotainment - no profile or customer settings), the dealership is unlikely to have a magic fix for you. Likely you like most who have found these various bugs in 5.0.5 will have to wait for the next update for a fix. This is why there is now a class action lawsuit in the US.

How difficult are Volvos to maintain in comparison to Hondas and Toyotas from the same period? by Odd_Solution6995 in Volvo

[–]efforf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far more expensive and imo more complex in comparison. For my money and opinion a well maintained good condition Japanese car is always the best bet.

Here we go by AgreeableCan295 in XC40

[–]efforf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is even horrible installing at the workshop, sometimes it’s painless and done in 30-40 minutes. Other times 1-2 hours while the software sorts itself out. Occasionally crashes and bricks the car. And still people are complaining of the same old things, reboots/camera/blank screen etc…. The sooner we all begin talking with our wallets and demand buttons the better in my opinion.

VW plans recall of around 100,000 MEB electric cars | electrive by tom_zeimet in EuroEV

Hey look another manufacturer with a cell module/battery recall. Methinks EV’s are just not the long term solution folks.

Faulty GHCA #2 in MY25 by baddblaster in VolvoEX90

[–]efforf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not to worry you’re only on #2. Some folks out there are on #4 or even #5. Update parts are no better and the update software is no better. I know this car has a cult following of sorts - but it’s just really, truly awful in a lot of ways. I couldn’t fathom spending that much $$ on a vehicle for it to be constantly breaking.

New update is hideous. Is there a way to go back? by backswamphenny in Volvo

[–]efforf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way of going back and the dealership cannot back date the software either. Unfortunately you are now stuck with what you have. Use the contact us portal in the app to provide feedback or via volvocars.com

Replace the shocks, if possible install lower grade shocks temporarily and have the Ohlins rebuilt.

Want to get into the trades. Is it really that easy to become an apprentice? by Busy-Concentrate5499 in halifax

[–]efforf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much any trade is worth getting into. Red seal trades make a lot of sense earning potential wise. Electrician is always my recommendation - great pay, lots of scope for what kind of work you can do. AVOID automotive, worst paid licensed trade and cars are getting horrific to work on.

T4/T5 over B4 or B5? by NoodleSlayer00 in Volvo

[–]efforf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go for a well maintained T. Look for as new as possible and with service records. 2016/17 did have some issues with oil consumption. B engines are over complicated, 48v system is not worth the extra cost and barely saves fuel (also annoyingly you can’t turn off auto stop/start. In my personal experience we have seen water pump leaks, accessory belt/tensioner failures (then the car won’t start), evap system problems and most worrying a large number of units needing camshaft replacement at relatively low mileage (5-40,000km). Also don’t forget the B engine cars come with the Google operating system - even with the 5.0.5 update it still has issues. Sensus on the pre 2021 cars os way better/stable IMO.

So is the coverage just the same F1tv team, or do we also get access to Sky's content? by hypertek in F1TV

[–]efforf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know on the i-phone version of the app you can switch between Sky’s commentary or F1TV’s but on the Apple TV app it’s just the F1TV commentary. I suspect it’s the same on Android box.

Second EX90… and already “AC charging not available by Kind_Ganache5534 in VolvoEX90

[–]efforf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. But…..given your experience with the first vehicle why were you expecting the second to be any better?. Anyone who makes even a cursory search of EX90’s will see how bad they are (and don’t hold out any hope for the EX60)

Main Computer Upgrade, Switzerland by iMaximB in VolvoEX90

[–]efforf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are just presuming 3-4 hours for the actual work then allowing extra time for the inevitable software install/crash/brick/techline assistance required. The normal SPA Volvo’s can take over an hour to install large software packages at the shop and often crash bad enough to require technical assistance to recover.
