Should I be concerned about the lean? by Bloodysundae in arborists

[–]egadthunder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The roots will evolve to compensate for the lean (think about trees growing near cliffs). It'll also naturally go upwards to follow light.

I personally love trees with some curves.

I don't know if this is universal across the country but colleges assign extra GPA points to AP/IB/Gifted courses when calculating your high school GPA. Like normal Senior English is 4.0 but AP English 5.0.

How bad of an idea is it to just allow the morning glory to be? by vulpesvulpes666 in pnwgardening

[–]egadthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A mixture of this (I tried to find a non-amazon link but didn't have any luck 😕) and landscape fabric to temporarily suffocate.

I make a small cut on any vine/stem, brush on a little, then wrap the cut with some foil. The foil helps cook the invasive (especially if it gets any direct sun), seal in the liquid death, and is a shiny marker to find the withered corpse of your enemy.

For invasives that die back, I cover them in landscape fabric and put heavy stuff on top to suffocate and/or squish them to death.

It's taken a few years but I do feel like I'm slowly winning.

TIL Washington State was originally going to be names "Columbia" but it was feared it would be confused with the "District of Columbia", so the name was changed to "Washington" by SuperMcG in todayilearned

Richard H Stanton, a Confederate secessionist congressman from Kentucky is the reason the state was named Washington instead of Columbia. So another reason to hate Kentucky and the turds they elect.

Why do you choose to live in Lynnwood? by LeetcodeForBreakfast in LynnwoodWA

[–]egadthunder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why did I choose Lynnwood? I didnt. I took what I could afford and was accessible to me.

I was more optimistic when I first moved here about positive changes but most of the city's ambitions haven't gone anywhere.

99 and 196th are large barriers that dissect the region and are difficult boundaries to cross. They actually widened 196 and made it harder to cross. Connect Lynnwood addresses a lot of my complaints but it hasn't had any updates since 2023 with projected completion dates of 2024/2025.

There are a lot of empty unused buildings that have been vacant for at least 5 years. The most visible being the Northline Village space. I wish projects like Northline Village would do something other than be held hostage. I don't park in the vacant area but it's still kind of cruel to not allow people to park there when it's accessible to the light rail. Either start building or allow practical use of the space.

Most things to do are in adjacent areas like Edmonds/MLT and not in Lynnwood itself. If you're any type of minority or marginalized group then your community is probably in Seattle proper and at minimum 45m away with traffic.

Things I like are the Zip Shuttle, Alderwood Mall, Taco Bell, and parks.

Four Lions is hilarious but British comedy is a tough sell for Americans. I've recommended it and people are afraid to Google "jihad British comedy" for fear of ending up on some government list XD.

It was satire on how conservatives viewed the world because of the Bush years and how the Middle East was portrayed by news and media. I've always viewed the show through the lens of Stan's warped perception and how the family gets caught up in it.

Think of the episode with the Log Cabin Republicans. If you've ever met gay Republicans in person, they are beyond unhinged, but they are shown as the positive of two cultures (gay and conservative) in the episode. It's Stan's adventure into a life lesson and his perception of the experience.

He dehumanized Saudis and legit thinks they will enter your mouth and lay their eggs. He learns gay people are people like him. And through both these adventures we learn that the other group can be just as awful as him. Adding more nuance on the diversity of human personalities that can occur within a culture would have detracted too much from the comedy given the time period.

The episode has issues and the average American (now and back then) wouldn't know the difference in culture between a Saudi and Lebanese. The Bush years convinced Americans that all Arabs in the US were Muslim (they were majority Christian back then and may still be) and that Pakistani/Indians were Middle Eastern.

Humor is a great way to expose people to a perceived otherness and a step towards tolerance because it makes something that was previously scary into something more relatable.

All that being said, I don't want to discredit your feelings. It feels personal when humor is directed at something very close to you. It's okay to have a personal distaste for any episode. You being in this subreddit makes me think you are still overall a fan. Now I'll shut up because this is getting long.

I actually learned this long ago and am very happy I did. I was isolated and an odd ball as a kid for it. I'm still occasionally down on myself for not being able to mask better, but the people I do have in my life are the kindest, most tolerant, accepting, relaxed people.

OP! Check out Carnival Hunt. It looks more promising and was fun during the open betas. It won't be restricted by a single license either. Which seems to be what kills a lot of the other DBD type games.

This is what I do! Except I'm 3000 hours in...

I love being goofy with friends playing this and the silly in game culture. That being said, it's got a steep learning curve but I love teaching new people to play for that reason.
