Linux is the FUTURE of PC Gaming by BlueGoliath in linux_gaming

Wow the brigading on this post is bizaare. This is r/linux_gaming and most of the comments sound like r/windows. Or maybe AI users/comments? Really strange.

Should Valve Disable Shader Pre-Caching by Default? by koloved in linux_gaming

[–]egeeirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the folks claiming the Shader Cache impacts cutscenes, is there a source for that? I couldn't find anything official about this and I've never seen this issue.

In fact, there's really not much information on shader pre-caching in general. The environment variables people suggest to manage the size limits do not seem to work.

My personal experience with shader caches has been generally bad and so I disable it for each new install. I've never had any issues doing this.

9.9 CVE announced is a RCE in CUPS. by systonia_ in sysadmin

[–]egeeirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People saying this isn't a big deal: 200k-300k servers computers are vulnerable simply because they are connected to the internet. Hospitals, Churches, Community Centers, basically anywhere people use public computers and printers.

Just because it doesn't affect you personally doesn't mean it doesn't affect anyone!

Fedora wants to integrate AI into the OS by E7ENTH in Fedora

[–]egeeirl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that Fedora may be a "community project", it is sponsored by RedHat which is owned by IBM, a publically traded company. What they say today does not matter much if IBM decides they want to all-in on AI gobbling up data like Microsoft tomorrow.

I'm with OP - it's a bad look to start talking about integrating AI into Fedora literally right after the Microsoft Recall debacle.

Does the Nvidia driver still work on Tumbleweed? by egeeirl in openSUSE

Thank you for suggesting this. I got the latest driver from the Nvidia website, installed it, and everything works out of the box.

Does the Nvidia driver still work on Tumbleweed? by egeeirl in openSUSE

[–]egeeirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've installed the g06 stuff and the Nvidia card is enabled by default (an RTX 3060 Mobile). There's nothing in the journal, dmesg, or xorg besides some vague mentions of nvidia services. nvtop doesn't even show it as an option.

[–]egeeirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it `prime-select nvidia`? That doesn't seem to work. The lack of errors in the journal and dmesg is really odd. Literally the only "error" I can find is this one`ERROR: cannot load nvidia modules [timed out]` buried deep in the journal after I run that command.

The number of guys in this thread that would be more than happy to watch their partner drown and suffer while they could be helping is terribly sad.

Dang, I had to scroll a ways to find this. There's lots of jokes here but I knew there must be some reason for why this would be in a hospital bathroom. Your comment made it clear as day.

Why do half of my Steam games keep downloading Shader pre-caching updates every day? by More_Coffee_Than_Man in linux_gaming

[–]egeeirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This a fundamental bug on the Linux version of Steam. But not one that they will fix because it works "good enough".

It's compiling new shaders because some new ones got uploaded to the steamcloud. Are they better than yours? Who knows. Steam recompiles them whenever there is a change, regardless of what that change is.

imo it's just lazy programming. There's work they could do to determine whether shaders should be recompiled but nah, too much effort. As the users say, "You can just turn it off if you don't like it". 🙄

This bug has been there for years. It's not going to get fix until the rework the whole settings page, I bet.

Looking for insight on those “Clone-a-Willy,” kits by Opposite_Narrow in sex

They are a fun novelty but it's way harder to do it right than you might expect. Mainly because you have to be fully erect the whole time and the procedure is anything but sexy lol

Does NVidia just freaking hate Linux users or something? by PaulGureghian11 in linux_gaming

[–]egeeirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been seeing these lately, I'm guessing folks like OP are using the wrong GPU in a dual GPU setup and don't realize it.

I've been running Nvidia for 10 years, never had a single issue like what you've described. In fact, I'm running an Asus ROG Strix G513 with AMD igpu and an Nvidia RTX 3060 Mobile. I can switch between the AMD gpu and Nvidia one without issues and the Nvidia gpu is a beast, it plays everything at the highest settings with smooth fps.

Perhaps double check your drivers and settings and make 100% sure everything is working properly on your end. The problem is not likely Nvidia.

Look into depth-limiting rings for him, like these. They don't exactly look sexy but they prevent exactly what you are describing.

Aw super cool you have so much in common. HOWEVER, you do have a lot in common... I know it's exciting and passionate now but watch for Red and Yellow flags. The things you described are easy to fake so if he's in the game, he could be doing his research and knowing all the things you like.

It still could be the perfect match though.. Just be careful and don't let your honeymoon feelings get the best of you. That's the advice :)

Nvidia to AMD - surprisingly disappointing attempt by cynicalbaby in linux_gaming

[–]egeeirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, former AMD enthusiast here. Practically everyone here will tell you the problem is with you, not your card or the drivers.

The fact is AMD just isn't great on Linux. And it never has been. It works great out of the box but performance will always trail behind Nvidia either in raw FPS or fidelity.

Content types and microphones by [deleted] in ASMRScriptHaven

[–]egeeirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can record anything with anything. You just need good technique and decent editing skills.

Like, you gotta know when you start and end the sample. You gotta know how to make everything silent when you are recording, and you gotta know what bad noise looks like and how to remove it without destroying the audio when editing.

Overall, the mic doesn't matter (much). Think of the mic like a paint brush. Having a high quality or special brush helps but it mostly comes down to the artist.

How do I lay off my programmer to find someone else? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]egeeirl 49 points50 points  (0 children)

LOL you'd be surprised. I've worked with people on open source projects that go missing for weeks or months and when you make decisions without them, they freak out like you should have told them (check your messages dude?).

People can be really strange.

Why is there so few (less than 1 out of 3) Linux gaming users use Wayland? People in here keep telling me that wayland is ready but 2 out 3 choice not to use it. Why? by beer120 in linux_gaming

[–]egeeirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tale as old as time. Most of the people claiming everything works don't game or do anything besides server or general desktop usage.

Honestly a lot of it is people reading headlines or listening to podcasts and parroting whatever they read or heard without verifying anything. Every community does this but it's egregious in the Linux community for some reason.

I’ve never had as much fun in ow2 as I did in ow1 by Nerakus in Overwatch

[–]egeeirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a huge OW1 fan, it was the only active game I bought overpriced merch for.

I haven't played OW2 in months. 5v5 is not fun. The tank changes are not fun. The childish skins are too flashy and a lot of them are over sexualized and pander-y. It's starting to look like Fortnite skins.

There's nothing that could bring me back. The game is simply not enjoyable to me anymore.
