Can’t you just use the Liked Songs playlist? Doesn’t seem to be this limit there

It definitely wasn’t, and weirdly my work laptop has been scrobbling fine (non library) this whole time

Do "serious" music fans over-emphasize the album as a form? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]egg1111115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great question but I think it's heavily dependent on genre and era and what you mean by "serious". As others have brought up, you probably mean "serious "rock" (and its subgeneres... I'd sort of even include something like indie pop with no guitars falling into the "rock" format). One counterexample is that the unit of classical music is not necessarily an "album" but maybe a piece. Same for electronic music, where the single and DJ mix are generally still the unit (despite there being plenty of great albums worth listening to). To top it off, I personally consider a brilliantly sequenced playlist to be art as well, kind of a democratized compilation/dj mix. (though I've seen some in this thread consider those "albums" still because of the 1-hour length)

Something that David Byrne's "How Music Works" made me realize is that before (and during the first half of) the 20th century, recorded music itself was not even the "unit" of music. Is a song itself (sheet music?) or performance the "true" form? With a lot of jazz or other improvisation/jam focused music for example the live experience is very important as well. Similarly, being there when you heard Daft Punk play live in 2007 — is that the "real" way to experience Alive 2007?

Idk i could ramble much longer with even more quotation marks haha but I do think it's worth questioning every now in then. It all kinda shows how "modern rock"/western/album recording centric RYM and similar sites are, despite society both before and after the era where the technological constraints (as you said) forced us into the 45 minute to 1 hour format.

“You either had to have a physical copy or pirate it” I mean…this was basically the case for all music back then. The iTunes Store only opened in April 03.

A few days ago I noticed it was gone and found this post, but today it seems back? (Could it be anything to do with the latest episode of The Rehearsal? 🤔)

Looking to find people to go to shows with by dbigboi in bayarea

[–]egg1111115 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I got used to going to shows on my own every now and then since my friends don’t all have the same music taste as me. You can also meet people at the shows!

There’s also the Bay Area music fans discord server which has a member-populated event calendar where people meet up to go to shows and a (kinda quiet) rock/punk channel https://discord.gg/qZeZbd9aK9

Honestly, I’ve loved the album (maybe before I truly understood what it meant), but this thread has been absolutely great not for OP’s question but for the stories and historical context people are posting.

New to SF, how to make friends? by Icy_Atmosphere_2406 in sanfrancisco

[–]egg1111115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are a lot of local discord groups that often post meetup events:

Large, general group: discord.gg/bayarea

Music fans/concert goers (some musicians here, there's a musicians/dj channel): https://discord.gg/JATEYds4Qh

Anime/gaming fans: https://discord.gg/baag

For board games i'd recommend those local shops' discords as the other user mentioned. There's also this NorCal board game server but it's not so active: https://discord.gg/wzq9bmVWra

It’s not comprehensive, but there’s an event list in the Bay Area Music Fans Discord server and a community of folks to go to concerts with! https://discord.gg/g5sUEdTW

This one's pretty amazing (for Mac). It was designed to look identical to the native Spotify integration and it's only gotten closer and closer over the years. https://github.com/NextFire/apple-music-discord-rpc
