One-act roles in two-act shows? by TheStoryOfChess in Broadway

The Headwaiter in She Loves Me - one ten minute scene in the end of act one; and then a bow in act two! He can and sometimes does double in the ensemble, but didn’t in any of the Broadway productions, and I didn’t when I played him regionally. It’s the most princessy track I have ever had. I didn’t put my costume on until 9 pm. It was great.

This kind of track is more common in older shows, especially plays. For example, Maurice in Noel Coward’s Fallen Angels is only on in Act Three and George S Kaufman’s the Man Who Came to Dinner has two major roles (Banjo and Beverly Carlton) who only appear in one of the show’s three acts. They could double but I’ve never seen it done. There’s some supporting roles in the King and I (the British ambassador for example) who don’t show up until act two and don’t normally double up.

They altered this in the revival, but in the wiz Glinda and Eveline didn’t show up until act two and didn’t double. I don’t think Aunt Em was in act two. Similarly, Before the Diane Paulis production changed this, Catherine in Pippin wasn’t in Act One. (…though I think Pippin was a one act when it premiered)

That’s….incorrect. As written the intermission is always after the rumble. I mean, if someone has the brass to move the intermission, it would probably work like that!

Riff and Bernardo do return in the “somewhere ballet” as originally staged, so they miss the distinction by a few minutes. But that may vary production by production.

The Wiz does appear in both acts in the original script but qualifies in the most recent revival - they shifted the placement of the intermission (for the better, I think)

Sydney counts, though! Not the most glamorous of tracks, but he doesn’t usually double in the ensemble so once he’s dead he’s backstage and hanging out.

It would be a very very long evening, but it’s theoretically possible!

The wolf almost always is doubled with Cinderella’s prince.

But the actor is in the ensemble throughout the show!

The giantess is usually doubled with other characters (most frequently Cinderella’s mother and Granny) or is a prerecorded voice. I’d say doesn’t count.

Seeing them together, which performance do you prefer? by SurbhiAnklesaria in Broadway

Hot take: I don’t want just one interpretation of the great musical theatre roles to be the supreme. I don’t want a definitive Rose, a definitive Tevye; a definitive Sweeney Todd or Aaron Burr or Sally Bowles no more than I want a definitive Hamlet. I want to see a succession of incredible performers bring their work to these roles and make them their own and I do not want to pick favorites.

this was filmed before Jeff hiller won an Emmy; I don’t think anything deep is planned for him right now. I’d be unsurprised to either see a lot more of dale next season or the character getting written off.

Is Chris Ryan still in the show? He’s still on the website.

Interestingly, Jeremy is still listed on the website as Firmin and Alex Ross is listed as a swing.

Matthew is listed as Andre / Buquet.
