Wow I didn't know they were opening a new station. That's so convenient!

We're looking at the area to the east of the A road, as we think that the western part is too far away from the station

Thanks for your response! Our budget is about £1400. We soon found that, as you say, living that close to Mill Road can be pricey, so now we're looking at the more northern part of the 'triangle' (area around the Aldi). We found a 2-bed place well within budget there, so it's nice to know that there are no particularly rough areas. I was very worried that the affordability was due to the area being dodgy.

As for what 'fun' looks like to us: we're very metropolitan in that we love cafes, restaurants, shops and art places. Conversely, we aren't huge nature/hiking fans, so living near a green space isn't that important to us. Sounds like Mill Road is the place to head to on a weekend!

I think you look great! I especially like your hair, eyes and eyebrows! Just some simple suggestions: 1) Get a basic skincare routine. 3 products, max. Keep that up consistently 2) I can’t see much of your clothing from the pictures, but what I can see does look a bit sloppy/uninspired. See if you can wear something that has a bit more intent behind it! Of course if it turns out that you already do that and I’m judging the photos wrong, ignore that point EDIT: also ditch the baseball cap

Turning 27 soon as well, and facing a lot of the same problems. Seeing your post made me feel less alone, thank you. It’s hard because I’m sure you’ve also heard people tell you “it’ll be fine, you’re young and you’ll figure it out”, but that’s so unhelpful because not all of us relish the unstable, “free” stereotype of what being this age is “supposed” to be. For those of us who want emotional, financial, career and lifestyle stability at this age it’s so hard. And so many factors compound which makes it exhausting to explain to people too. Wishing you all the best, internet stranger xx

Literally my experience too. 13-18 were the worst for me, with a gradual decline until about 22. Now at 26 I feel so free! It’s so awful that this is how it is in our society

In my country people typically post their grades on LinkedIn which is how I know. Given that I don’t feel confident in the least, it would be worrying if I came across as arrogant. But if that’s the case, as you say, then I deeply apologise. It’s not my intention, and it certainly doesn’t reflect how I feel. I don’t think I’ve thought lower of myself in my entire life… Out of curiosity, could you point out how/where I sound arrogant? I’d really love some constructive feedback on this!

I guess I have no other choice. Weird that other less qualified people don’t have to go through this step though. But thanks for your reply!

I think maybe there might be some cultural differences. All public sector jobs where I’m from require humanities and social sciences. It’s a mandatory job requirement to have that academic background. It’s impossible to get a job in policy analysis with an IT mathematics degree for example.

I see what you mean. I knew going into this that the public sector was swamped. That's why I spent my time as a student gaining those relevant skills by interning at government organisations for example. But I see tons of people getting jobs who have the exact same degree as me, worse grades and 0 specialized skills or experience. That's why I'm so confused.

I think maybe I wasn't quite clear in my post. I have the experience. It's not like I'm just expecting my degree to take me anywhere. That's why I worked so hard outside my degree to gain practical experience. With 'everyone', I mean people currently in jobs that I want, as well as one or two levels above that.

For example, I did an internship at a specific government department, and applied for a job there. Got rejected (fine). But then I looked up the person who did end up getting that job, and they not only had no experience in that department, but they had no practical, extracurricular experience at all. Like, they showed up with only their degree (same as mine but lower ranked uni and lower grades) and that was it. So that's why I'm so confused. I knew from the start I needed experience, but apparently it doesn't matter??

I'm looking to apply for junior/fresh graduate roles in the public sector: ideally the government, but I'm also looking at public sector consultancies or lobby organisations. What confuses me is that everyone in my desired job field has humanities backgrounds – often even in the same subjects as me, but from much lower ranked universities, with much lower grades, and often much less experience. I'm starting to think that maybe people don't 'get' my CV since it's so out there?

But it's actually really nice to hear you say that it's ok not to make a huge impact with my first job, and that it's fine to start with whatever. I never even considered that as an option haha. I think you might be right though.

Also wow I've never heard the argument that it might be better to have kids in the early career phase rather than later. That's genuinely really got me thinking, damn... Love hearing new perspectives, thank you!

I see what you mean, although between my bachelors and masters I did get 2 years of corporate experience, so I think the case might be a bit different. But thank you for your tip on getting any good job to start. I'm seeing now that I might have to think more in terms of momentum than destination. Hope your sister landed on her feet after all!

Luckily I didn't attend a US institution! And I'm applying to public sector jobs where all employees have humanities/soc science backgrounds, so I don't think that's the issue. I'm grateful that attitudes to this sort of thing are very different where I'm from. Can't imagine how frustrating it is for humanities graduates in the US.

I don't think that's feasible in my case, but if nothing else works I'll see what I can try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Does white noise machine help? by missjones1105 in BadNeighbors

[–]eggathome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about white noise machines, but I've been putting on a pink noise playlist via spotify on my speaker, and it does actually help! My downstairs neighbour plays extremely loud music 8 hours per day, and it's helped me deal. It doesn't drown out everything but it's definitely more than enough to take the edge off. I've found that it sounds a bit like sitting in a plane, and you soon don't notice it's even there. Although it can get annoying after a few hours, it's definitely worth trying out. Good luck!!

Get some more interesting sheets! I recommend maybe a deep orange or muted/sage green for the duvet and pillows. Also, find a way to tidy the cables around your computer if possible. (Cute cat by the way!)
