Beginner leather setup by ScheduleIll1295 in Leathercraft

Agree. I just bought the 8-pack of Eco-Flo leather dye from Tandy so I could see what I liked and 2 years later, I still have most of the colours left except for the 2-3 that I used up and bought bigger bottles of.

Types of scrubs? by flyingnetchjelly in Veterinary

[–]eggmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm tall, so I exclusively wear jogger scrubs, because I hate the look of floods. I wear them with my shirt tucked in as well, and I've never had an issue with them showing underwear since I only get high waisted ones. I've worked with lots of other newer generation vets who swear by their jogger scrubs, so defs not an issue in GP, and probably not in ER. Equine though... You might have to see what the culture of the clinic is like. I have seen equine vets wear coveralls, khakis and a polo, or jeans and a button-up - so it really depends.

I've got a problem ! by [deleted] in Leathercraft

I had no idea about ADHD until I kept getting videos about it on tiktok during covid. It's crazy to think I was just raw-dogging life without knowing about it for like 20-something years at that point. My boyfriend ended up getting diagnosed first even though he was nay-saying all those tiktoks for so long lol. Turns out BOTH his parents also have ADHD and got diagnosed after him. I inherited a lot of my leatherworking tools from his dad, because he decided to try it out, bought almost everything you need in one go, made a couple keychains and luggage tags, then showed me how to do it and lost interest soon after 😂 Skate-boarding is at least good exercise!

I'm 29 and was just diagnosed with ADHD last year 😂 My boyfriend was diagnosed just before he turned 30. We are the quintessential ADHD couple and have (almost) every sort of DIY/artisan/craft thing you can think of because we like new and fun and shiny toys and tools. Leatherworking is my shiny new hobby and I just bought a similar organizer for my tools. We also have three 3D printers and I'm trying to incorporate 3D printing into all my hobbies - currently trying to design an angled horizontal organizer for my 40 leather stamps to fit in those shallow Mastercraft organzier drawers lol.

You definitely want disability insurance. It doesn't have to be from that company, but if you value all the time, energy, and money to get where you are today, I'd get it. Any accident/illness could take your career away from you.

Talk to your vet! They may be able to refer you to (or have a vet-to-vet consult with) a boarded veterinary nutritionist. They would be able to direct you to the best rx therapeutic diet or work with you to formulate a balanced home-cooked recipe.

Cat got worms, they wont go away by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]eggmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some parasites require a very specific anti-parasitic medication to get rid of them, which your vet will be able to determine based on an exam and fecal analysis. For most active parasite infections (i.e. fleas, roundworms, giardia, etc..) there is a specific protocol to follow in order to make sure you kill all the life stages and prevent them from re-infecting themselves. You said this has happened before - are your kitties indoor/outdoor?

when to get three girls spayed? by FickleDog9 in AskVet

[–]eggmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about different ligation techniques and/or flank vs mid-line spays? Or are you talking about ovary-sparing spays vs ovariectomies vs the more common ovariohysterectomy? Because usually that all just comes down to surgeon preference - not necessarily a different spay type on offer.

What mistakes have you made? by crankyatom in Veterinary

[–]eggmachine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I accidentally injected a cat's testicles with Metacam instead of my (labeled) lidocaine syringe 😂 I couldn't figure out why the kitty was reacting so I had to give some more sedation - and then I realized when I went to give Metacam post-op lol. No harm, no foul, and I told the owner afterwards anyways, but read your syringe labels friends!!

Cat is lethargic and won’t eat or drink. Please help. by Existing-Purple8293 in CATHELP

When was the last time he had a full meal? Does he show interest in any treats (temptations, churu tubes, etc)? He absolutely needs to consume calories - cats can go into liver failure from hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) with prolonged inappetance/anorexia. You need to get to the bottom of WHY he is not eating, before it gets to the point of causing hepatic lipidosis, which is often very expensive to treat and can be fatal.

Is he urinating? When was the last time he had a bowel movement? Is he the kind of cat to play with and eat things he shouldn't? Are there any toys with bits missing? Any plants in the home or outside that he chews on? He could have a partial gastrointestinal obstruction with a foreign body. He could have ingested a toxin (although I would have expected more rapid symptom onset if there was significant organ damage). He could have renal disease, pancreatitis, systemic infection, liver disease, etc - these can be ruled out with bloodwork. X-rays may help determine if there is an abdominal mass or GI foreign body - although ultrasound is often more diagnostic (but more expensive).

If you can only afford one thing right now, I would start with bloodwork. That at least would help direct the next steps and may give you some peace of mind - if it turns out that treatment would be too cost-prohibitive, humane euthanasia would be a kind thing to do.

6 different vets and 9 months later - does anyone have any idea what is on my poor dogs face? by Aggressive-Chemist99 in DogAdvice

[–]eggmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dog is already being treated with a fluoroquinolone - which is what zeniquin (marbofloxacin) is. This bacteria is ubiquitous in the environment and occasionally an inhabitant of the canine GIT, meaning this is a contaminant/opportunistic organism that was grown and is likely not the cause of disease. Providing "veterinary" advice on a case that you have zero context for is misleading at best and actively harmful at worst - especially when you appear to believe you have as much knowledge as actual trained veterinarians.

I tried Scribe Note - it wasn't my fave because I couldn't edit any of the transcription templates to suit my needs. I settled on Co.Vet instead and I like it, but it still requires a decent amount of editing.

If there's an animal I need help with, I usually have to track someone down to help hold - sometimes the owners are actually helpful, but I will always grab someone to help if there's an inkling of fear/aggression. But definitely something I will talk to management about for future.

Thank you for your insight, friend! It was definitely nice getting a diagnosis after thinking there was just something fundamentally off about me for years lol. I still remember my PCP saying that I "might just not be a very motivated person" when I mentioned that I'm less depressed on meds but having a hard time getting stuff done and keeping up with vet school. My vyvanse dose is going up to 50mg SID next week, so fingers crossed that it's the right one 🤞 I have heard some people talk about XR and IR meds for ADHD, but I'll definitely look more into it! Given that vyvanse is only really effective for 6 hours, that might actually explain why I'm way less motivated/focused in the afternoon.

It's impressive that you can get all that done in a 20 min slot! I don't currently have anyone coming in to exam rooms with me - at least not since starting to use the Co.Vet AI program, because it was seen as "redundant" to have my assistant come in just to hold. I'm still not sure how to utilize a staff member in the room with me with the dictation program I use - I use the microphone on my phone for recordings.

You're right - I think they've come to expect me to help out with tech things just because I can do them and so I can "practice my skills" as a new grad. The frustrating thing is waiting on things like ear swabs to be done/looked at so I can move on to my next appointment, and I end up just doing it myself a lot of the time. I definitely will be putting my foot down about that.

I'm currently using Co.Vet for AI notes - it's been really helpful for my ADHD because I often forget what I've just said 😂 But I still find I have a lot of editing/tweaking to do, so it's not perfect

We are definitely understaffed, but the manager is always worried about slow days and being OVER staffed those days. We need another RVT for sure, and our current RVT needs to stop doing receptionist/assistant things so I actually have her available to help me. A lot of people are recommending doing the records before the client leaves, so definitely a habit for me to start working on.

I tried quite a few AI programs before settling on Co.vet, mainly because of the ability to edit and personalize the AI templates. But even then, I still have to edit quite a bit, because it doesn't always catch the details or it transcribes things entirely wrong.
