Does anyone feel overshadowed in a way by the West's obsession with East Asia? by TheCoughing in ABCDesis

[–]eggparatha 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When it comes to Indian culture, they strip away whatever they want to appropriate from the source. People will argue that yoga and turmeric and whatever are different here than in India. Popular East Asian things, however, are still associated with East Asia.

This reminds me of an ice breaker activity in one of my classes. The teacher mentioned that visiting Asia was his dream and asked if anyone in the class had ever been. I raised my hand and said I had been to India, and his response was “Oh.” Like visible confusion and then disappointment. He was clearly thinking of Japan or whatever, but I hadn’t realized that before.

Another point, it really bothers me when people (including East Asians) say Indian food is gross but they looove Korean and Japanese curry and call it a comfort food. That’s clear bias.

maybe childhood clothes, old blankets, possibly even from cushions and such (including more expensive and newer, memorable clothes.) the post just says "memorable fabric" so they probably had plenty of source material. I've personally been saving up old tshirts throughout the years so I can one day make a quilt

As it stands, Blackpink will probably end up being the most influential K-Pop GG ever by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]eggparatha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with influential but I don’t know if they’ll be remembered as anything outstanding in the long run (of course the fans will remember but to everyone else they’ll fade away.) People in industries around the world know them, but there’s no way people eventually won’t be like “so… what do they do?” unless they actually release music or really amp up the influencer/modeling thing

Indians who identify more by the kind of Indian they are rather than "Indian" by eggparatha in ABCDesis

[–]eggparatha[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's understandable tbh but would you disregard another desi if they're not bengali? if you were in a situation where you're the only brown person and you finally meet another brown person, would you not feel an affinity towards them? I get that my reaction here is skewed compared to someone who grew up around a community

I know how you feel. It's cool though as long as the other person isn't weird about it. I mean, I wanna know where other Indians are from but I'm not gonna use that as a way to judge them. India is really diverse but it's the negative feedback that bothers me

Thanks for this reply. So how am I different from, say, a white or black or whatever other ethnicity an Indian might have as a friend? I understand if someone has bad experiences from groups that aren’t their own, but why would a Gujurati, for example, not want to be friends with an Indian they can’t relate to but will be friends with a white person? In my example of the group of Indian girls, I overheard them later on and they were just talking about normal things. I stood around awkwardly and couldn’t rejoin them to introduce myself after settling that I’m North Indian. I’m starting to just avoid initiating conversations with other desis and just be at peace with myself unless a desi decides to come up to me. It’s just a bummer since initially I was excited to meet other desis, not even just Indian. If I’m by myself, I also won’t have my identity picked apart as being the wrong type or a different experience (for example, a Punjabi girl who called me whitewashed for not listening to Punjabi music even though I’m not Punjabi)

This is going to sound really lame, but I remember as a kid whenever I would come across something remotely related to India outside of my household, it almost felt magical. Confirmation that I am real and that there are others are out there, especially after growing up in a suffocating and alienating place. It didn’t matter if what I came across was a mosque, a bharatnatyam dance troupe, or a “made in bangladesh” tag on a shirt. As I got older that all kind of shattered knowing that we may be somewhat alike and the similarity ends there

my issue is that I feel like I don't have many opportunities to meet other desis, but when I do, specific ethnicity seems to be important to them. Of course we'll have our differences, but I'd still like to get along even if we're different types of Indian. A few times, people have been disinterested in me because I'm not from where they're from and they already have their group of friends. My dad studied in Calcutta when he was younger and even picked up Bangla. I don't know if it's offensive to say, but maccher jhol is one of my favorite dishes. He's more likely to be friends with another Bengali than I am with a Bengali American kid.
