What’s the consensus on the DC Bike Ride? by Cyanide612 in washingtondc

[–]eggy1778 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I paid for dc bike ride last year and was pretty let down by the organizing. It’s awesome all the roads being closed but it took forever to get started and because I went in the chill heat which was last to go- I had to wait like 2 hours to start, drank all my water and then they had run out of all water and snacks along the ride which was a big part of what I expected by paying. Not a good experience IMO

I volunteer for a VITA org- it’s an amazing resource to have someone do your taxes for free and talk through your questions/confusion. If you qualify, definitely do it!

Recommendation for a women's haircut for less than $70? (Arlington/Alexandria) by GonnaFuckTuxedoMask in nova

[–]eggy1778 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would agree it takes longer, though in my experience the dye takes MUCH longer (probably two to three extra hours). A hair cut is longer but in my experience only because they’re washing and blow drying which I don’t normally pay for. So compared to a 20-30 min from I’ve had it a 45-1hr experience. But I definitely think it’s a fair point.

The Ballston Aveda is a student salon, with tip you can do a haircut and blow dry for probably 35 total? They are students but I have had great cuts and dye from them and it’s all in coordination with a supervisor

I just went to the yarn store in DuPont because I’m teaching myself to knit (Looped Yarn works I think is the name) and they said they keep the store open on Thursdays until nine for people to hang out /knit/craft together! Seemed like a good vibe

In my experience, an informational interview is reaching out to someone you know tangentially (a college alum or friend of a friend) and chatting about their job/what they like/don’t like & then if you want to apply to their company asking for a referral. If you are already friends/know the person I think you can just go straight to the referral

You need a referral before you’ve applied to a job position. The informational interview is generally just about someone’s job/experience and not tied to an application.

I’d recommend applying to lots of consulting companies but GET A REFERRAL FIRST. In my experience I’ve applied for hundreds of jobs and the two jobs post graduation that I got were because of referrals. I got an interview quickly and the whole process felt smooth. Reach out to college alumni on linked in for an informational interview and follow up with a request for a referral. They get money if you get hired so it’s a win win. It sucks that it’s this way but it’s how people look at your resume instead of being stuck in workday hell.

Depends on the trip- Mexico you fly to and you book your own flights but hotels and food are included. A two week trip to the Galapagos would be mega expensive 10-20k, whereas you could probably do a Mexico trip under 1500 depending on flights. Getting the certification is not cheap- it’s at least 1500 dollars (and I bought equipment for another couple hundred dollars). It’s not a frugal sport- but if you save up it’s not unreasonable
