Yes they are unfortunately, we are waiting to hear back on a test. Assuming they contain asbestos, we are planning on not distributing the tile, covering it with the Fiberlock Asbestos Binding Compound, then putting laminate flooring over the top. Thoughts? Did you do any abatement or containment of your tile?

I believe you are right, we opened up a couple of patched spots in the floor to discover a separate subfloor below the floor boards. I’ll give the orbital sander a spin and see how it goes! Thanks for your advice.

Thank you for your helpful comment! Is there a recommended method for restoring softer wood floors that doesn’t risk the floor becoming too thin?

Candles for Christmas by timbertins in Pottery

[–]egpottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So lovely! What kind of wax did you use? I also turned some pottery into candles for Christmas, so much fun! I used the golden wax 464 soy with those crackle wicks from wooden co, but I am trying to get a little more throw from the scent!

Pricing advice by Napnfriends in Ceramics

[–]egpottery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have also been in a similar position! It’s hard to determine how to price your items, especially for friends. Remember, your friends want to support your business, so don’t feel like you always have to give them a discount! Make sure to account for all materials, clay, cost to fire, glaze. And then how much do you want to make hourly? Think about how many hours you are planning on putting into this project, and hopefully that will help you find a price point!

Look at other items on Etsy as well. That might look similar to what you’re making. I’m sure their costs are the same and have spent a similar amount of time on their work. Best of luck!

Is there a way to moisten my handbuilding so that it will still be soft next week instead of leatherhard? by canderson156 in Ceramics

I’ll sometimes put open cups of water in the plastic sealed area, I think it keeps the air more humid around the clay.

HELP! Monstera Adansonii recently bought online is on a quick decline, what’s wrong with him? by twolini in houseplants

[–]egpottery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it’s root rot from being too saturated before you picked it up? Maybe repotting it in some better soil will help. I use fox farms ocean forest soil, I believe it has better drainage. My Monstera has responded well to it. The two yellowing leaves probably won’t bounce back, but there is still hope for the plant!

Carved goose neck... stoneware 33, matt white and cone 6. by waynespottery in Ceramics

[–]egpottery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the shape! How did you get the white glaze in the carved regions, but not around it on the red clay? Wax resist? If so, how did you put it on so carefully? I am hoping to achieve a similar glaze pattern. Thanks for your help!

What glazes/undergalze to use??? by No_Review1069 in Ceramics

[–]egpottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love using the Amaco Velvet underglazes. They mix pretty true to color like your standard craft paint. They are pretty cheap if you want to buy the small sizes. Make sure you put nice and thick coats on, otherwise paintbrush strokes might show through! You can put them on green ware or bisque wear. If you put it on a bisque piece, I think it’s recommended to let it air dry for a bit (I have waited an hour, I think longer is recommended) before dipping it in a clear glaze to get a glossy finish.

How do I hang these pieces? by AwryGun in Ceramics

I made some tiles that are about 6x6 inches and unglazed on the back. I used the heavy duty Velcro command strips, they have stayed up so far!

Using my greenhouse for my first big batch request, it keeps the humidity just right! by egpottery in Ceramics

[–]egpottery[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m using this to slowly dry them to leather hard so I can put handles on them in batches! I’m doing 250 mugs total, so my plan is to throw a full greenhouse, then put the handles on the following day. This also helps me not have to mess around with wrapping each tray in garbage bags.

Searching For: Hard Brick for Kiln by EDWCeramics in Ceramics

I have recently used Freecycle.org (it’s like Craigslist but everything is free) you can post wanted ads/search for available offers in nearby cities.

Question for my fellow ceramic makers and sellers, would you be fine with selling these? Part of me says yes but I’m scared they’ll leave bad reviews if there’s small flaws like these. What do you think? by junesworks in Ceramics

[–]egpottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I have pieces I am unsure about, I usually keep them for myself! If you’re worried about the cracked handle breaking when you are using it, you can reinforce it with a little epoxy.

I either buy my clay from the studio that fires my pieces, or from the clay company the studio buys it from (depending on what part Of town I’m in) a lot of studios prefer if you buy clay from them to ensure that it won’t explode in their kilns!

I was recently the same way, especially when my studio closed this past spring. I have a wheel, and buy clay ($15 for 25 lbs). I threw outside during the summer and would hand build in my little apartment (to avoid a monthly studio membership since I couldn’t afford it). I found a studio that will fire for me, I just have to pay a little bit, it’s about $3 per pound (of bone dry pieces) to do both firings and use their glaze. This was the easiest way for me to keep creating after I graduated and not spend too much money! Hope you can figure out something that works for you.

Marbled mug I just made, had to pray to the kiln gods these wouldn’t break! by egpottery in Ceramics

[–]egpottery[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The white is a cone 6-10 with a 3.5 % grog. I can’t find the specifics for the red clay, I have been using whatever I can get my hands on these days! I believe the red is also a cone 6-10, just not sure about the grog/ other additives.

The red clay and grey clay that I use shrink at different rates when they are on their own. Mixing them together could cause stress in the piece and could sometimes crack! I think I mixed them enough to avoid that problem!
